In a piece explaining why there will be no deus ex machina to swoop in and save the Republican party from their crappy set of primary candidates, Michael Tomasky writes:
So there is no savior. And let us please be clear on why there is no savior. Because there is no one who can satisfy the base of the GOP—a cohort so drunk on ideology and resentment that they cheer electrocutions and boo a soldier—and be elected president of the United States. Period. The standard journalistic trope the past few months has been to say that the Republican establishment would step in at some point and not let things get too out of hand. But that’s mostly nonsense. This GOP establishment is barely less loopy than the base. If the base is driving the party into a ditch, the establishment is riding shotgun holding a shovel.
Indeed.

Truer words have never been spoken.
Sadly…very true.
(and it IS sad because we need at least two healthy parties to make democracy work.) The Democrats are are FAR from perfect, but they are not appealing to the worst in people to get elected.
Gene, Former Republican
I have watched, along with the rest of the world, how the Republican party has sunk like a rock into a world of using every social issue (and making up others) to build a campaign and platform. Virtually nothing is said about helping pull the economy out of this hole; making sure education is up to snuff with the rest of the world; maintaining a viable safety net for our seniors; building a better health care system; etc. It is all about abortion, contraception (Let’s take those awful rubbers off the store shelves), gay equality (of which a couple of states are turning back the clock to make orientation a reason to discriminate on jobs), etc.
To say this party has become pathetic and a laughing stock is putting it mildly. Worse yet, their supporters are all fired up over all these issues like they will build a better America. This is the mentality that thinks turning back the clock to the 1950′s is the best solution in a 21st century world. Heaven help us! AND their candidates and congressional leaders feed them all the religious and heavenly slop the hogs can suck up. Truly sad and pathetic.
I’ve said it beforeL the world is watching, and laughing their asses off. These clowns make the world’s dictator’s look intelligent.
