My cartoon for the next issue of Baltimore OUTLoud. We have a same-sex marriage law now in Maryland. It won’t take effect until January 2013 however, and if certain people have their way it never will…

We still have a fight ahead of us, Marylanders. Just remember that. A dirty, brutal, all-out fight. But when its over, this year, next year, or some year afterward and we are all equal, we will know who our neighbors really were, and whose friendly smiles as we passed by were fake…

The sad part is how true this really is. What worries me more that many within our own community 1 don’t realize this is going to go to referendum and 2 they are already making plans like marriage equality is a done deal. My big brother in my fraternity put a post on Facebook to save the first two weekends in June 2013 and he has already started planning his wedding. I hope he doesn’t spend money that he won’t get back. He is acting like this is a done deal and i think his heart is going to be crushed.
Get married in DC, then go back to Maryland and sue their asses off.
@Mykelb- I think this is the actual strategy of the GLBT groups here in MD. I would love to think that they could pre-emptively try to prevent this from being voted on by challenging it in court. Sadly I think they are waiting for the referendum to nullify the law before challenging it and we will have to wait another two years for it to work through the system. Actually MD recognizes same sex marriages from other jurisdictions but it evedntally does not bind employers to recognize those marriages. I asked about it at my work and that is what they came bac kwith is they don’t need to recognize the marriage for benefit purposes.
