Wisconsin seems to have come down with a case of the Mississippi’s. This country is getting scary, y’all:

The Republican led Wisconsin assembly voted to ban private insurance coverage for abortions and mandate abstinence-only sex education classes Wednesday morning, according to The Green Bay Post Gazette.

The Assembly voted 61-34 Tuesday evening to ban abortion coverage from a health insurance exchange set up by the Affordable Care Act in 2014. The federal law allows states the option to prohibit abortion coverage under the exchange, set up primarily by individuals and small businesses to buy health insurance coverage. Plans offered in the exchange would only cover abortions under the terms of the Hyde Amendment (rape, incest or when the health of the mother is at risk).

[...]

The Assembly also voted 60-34 to overturn the Healthy Young Act, which required Wisconsin schools to teach sex education classes about contraception information along with abstinence-centered education. Instead, the vote will allow schools to provide abstinence-only classes.

Abstinence-only sex education does not work. Period. It’s not about arming teens with accurate information [which, ahem, lowers the teen pregnancy, and thus, the abortion rates], but rather about imposing fundamentalist morality on people, damn the consequences, because it makes wingnuts feel better. I miss the days when this country was being run by adults.

Also, um, I may be missing something, but if insurance companies in the exchange want to provide abortion coverage, isn’t that a  free market decision? This is taking away citizens’ freedom to purchase policies which offer abortion coverage, even when it’s done entirely with their own money.

Wingnuts don’t even know what they believe anymore, and we’re always left to clean up their messes.

The link above also says that Wisconsin governor Scott Walker is expected to sign both bills. Of course he is.
