Last night, Rachel Maddow had two awesome segments on the “ex-gay” movement, its history, Dr. Robert Spitzer’s recent retraction of his study on “ex-gays,” and the harm the movement does to all gay people. She also interviewed Gabriel Arana, who broke that story and told his own in the process. This is essential viewing because, as David Badash says, she connects a lot of dots:

The fundagelicals will ignore this retraction wholeheartedly. They ignore any kind of science or rational thought that contradicts their theological worldview, so why should this be any different? They are intellectually dishonest at every turn in their unwavering loyalty to their subculture of Yahweh worshippers. Its tribal, just like the holey buybull describes the Israelites in the first testament.

Having associated with fundies years ago, I quickly learned that if something doesn’t fit their deeply held beliefs, it is just a matter of twisting some statement or commandment from the Book and making it fit. NO research or scientific/psychiatric evidence/proof is going to make us OK in God’s or their eyes. A dog may be a dog and a cow may be a cow, but a gay person is not gay, he’s straight and is struggling, confused, or just wants to be hated by God and man and deliberately makes himself gay. It is all such total crap, but it has to fit their deeply held beliefs or they’ll make it fit. No one can ever accuse them of being rational, clear thinking, or common sensed.
I have a thing for Maddow!! She’s cute, smart, articulate, cool, and doesn’t give a rap what the wackaloons think about her. Now THAT’S beauty!!!
