Remember the amazing “It’s Time” ad from GetUp! Australia that went viral last year and brought international attention to that nation’s marriage equality debate? Well get out the tissues, because the UK just got its own tear-jerking version. And it involves a military homecoming. Watch it below.
What’s your opinion on this ad? I think it’s wonderfully compelling. Rhetoric about rights and benefits, while very important, will only get us so far. Bold ads like this one and other recent ads from Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Argentina that appeal to viewers’ sense of empathy and pack an emotional punch, are exactly what we need in the marriage equality fight in the U.S. And I love that the ad refers to the current state of affairs as marriage discrimination, as I do. It’s about time we start calling a spade a spade.

It was very moving. What was nice was that both soldiers had a loved one to whom he was returning, regardless of whether that person was of the opposite sex or the same sex. The emotional attachment was the same for each returning soldier. When will people in the United States be accepting of such an advertisement?
The idea is very good, but the way it was filmed is a bit cheesy
Indeed very moving and powerful, beautifully done! I think it makes the point quite obvious. I hope it goes viral around the world.
Absolutely loved it, especially the close up of the eyes. I wish I had been able to see things like this when I was young. Anyone who thinks this is evil, sick, sinful, whatever is heartless and brainless.
Awesome.
I added it to the LGBT Professional Networking Group – Global that i manage on LinkedIn with over 13,300 members globally. http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=63687
Beautiful! It brought tears to my eyes. It’s a welcome alternative to the tepid ads we see here in the United States. Perhaps we are still constrained by the legacy of the closet, whereas that ad blew the closet door off its hinges.
That is really lovely! A warrior coming home from a distant war to be greeted by his beloved is as old as humanity itself. What cracked me up was when the soldier got the ring out and proposed to his fiancée!
Perhaps, in my lifetime, the gender of the couple won’t matter and being LGBT will be passed off as like being left-handed is now, ie, when I’m among new people I pick up a pen and start to write someone says ‘oh, you’re a leftie!’ and then it’s just accepted as part of me.
Or not even mentioned at all as anything out of the ordinary.
Yes, I know, but being the same as being left-handed will probably be as far as we get in my lifetime.
I’ve already signed the petition, but watching this makes me wish I could all over again.
