Such are the yokels who get elected to public office in places like Mississippi:
Days after he signed a law that would effectively shut down his state’s only remaining abortion-performing clinic, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant accused Democrats of having one mission in life: “to abort children.”
“The hypocrisy of the left that now tried to kill this bill, that says that I should have never signed it, the true hypocrisy is that their one mission in life is to abort children, is to kill children in the womb,” Bryant told conservative radio host Tony Perkins on Tuesday.
Bryant touted the bill, which increases the requirements for doctors to legally perform abortions, as the “the first step” in ending abortions in Mississippi, a goal the governor campaigned on.
This is why there is no such thing as “civil discourse” in this country, and for liberals, it shouldn’t even be viewed as a reasonable goal. Wingnuts do not operate or argue in the realm of reality, and you cannot have “civil discourse” with people like that. Aside from the obvious corollaries between the fights for women’s reproductive health and LGBT equality [they're the same fight], people should note how similar the fantasy worlds they construct in both fights really are. Instead of arguing the merits of civil marriage equality, they cry wolf on behalf of their gods about gays “recruiting children” and “silencing [fundamentalist] Christians.” Instead of having an honest debate on the best way to ensure that women get the best healthcare possible and are able to raise wanted, planned children in the best environments possible [an argument that we easily win], they create a ludicrous fantasy world wherein the majority of Americans who support Roe v. Wade are somehow murderous monsters who want nothing more than to kill every baby on the planet. It enhances their victim mentalities to think like this, and it preys on the stupid. It also keeps their flocks in line, because over there on the Far Right, things are very authoritarian, and their people are trained not to question the words and deeds of their Respected Male Leaders.
In short: one side is fighting for the rights and health of all women, and the other side says that the Good Guys wake up all day trying to come up with new ways to kill kids. Civil discourse? Please.

Governor Bryant is an example of one that should’ve been aborted.
I do spend a bit of the day trying to get folks like this Governor and his ilk UNEMPLOYED and off the Public DOLE. See I can hold TWO thoughts in my head at the same time. R L Pete Housman Proud Liberal
with fully functioning higher brain intact.
LOL good one Michael.
Of course, conservatives such as this one say outrageous things like this to mask THEIR mission, to kill already-born children (at least the ones they don’t like).
I thought Democrats’ one mission in life was to turn everybody gay and make Baby Jesus cry.
Buffy, we feel that those are goals that we can achieve simultaneously. Here’s the latest from the Agenda meeting: we abort all non-gay babies so that our population is completely FABULOUS then we be mean to the baby Jesus until he cries.
Also, Mississippi has upped the stupid ante. Tennessee, it’s your move again.
And to think, THIS is the same state that totally curbstomped a personhood amendment when it was on the ballot.
@Benjamin, they curbstomped it because, FOR ONE SHINING MOMENT, the voters of Mississippi were informed as to what the hell the actual bill was about. It was quite a wonder, watching the least educated state in the nation, when presented with actual facts, manage to say “what the HELL?!”
Even in our sad state as a democracy, when you manage to get real information out to people, sanity can and does reign.
The very fact that GOVERNOR Bryant is even entertaining one of America’s worst hate-mongers, Tony Perkins, never mind giving him an interview, is in itself truly appalling.
He should be removed from office.
Women will not stop having abortions in Mississippi if having one is illegal or because they have to jump through ten rings of fire and shame to get one. Women who don’t have the resources to go to another state will have to use other means that can be dangerous or even lethal. And I would imagine that women who have complications from illegal abortions may be allowed to die painfully and/or treated like criminals. Sometimes it seems like there is this belief among anti-choice folks that abortions did not happen in this country before Roe v. Wade. They did and many women paid for them with their lives and dignity.
