Oh dear God. Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who, to my knowledge, has little awareness of the complexity of the issue of bullying, or of the intersection between bullying and religious wingnuts, is asking us all to be nice to each other:
UGH ….
Savage later called the walk-out “pansy-a**ed” which, from someone who helms an anti-bullying campaign, is obviously a very negative thing to say ….
Can’t we just be good and kind to each other? Isn’t faith in love and honesty and kindness all any of us really need?
People. People who need people. Are the luckiest people. In the world.
All we need is love… Dum dum dum dum dum…
The person trumpeting Perez’s condemnation of Savage’s comments? Erstwhile self-proclaimed virgin Ben Shapiro, who gets uncomfortable when the Golden Globes features jokes about penises. [Seriously, just click on those links. It's a treasure trove. And when you're done with that, check out Tbogg's Shapiro archives. I'm aware that Peter LaBarbera, Michelle Malkin and Jim Hoft are still in the running, but Ben may be the dumbest person on the entire internet. And he's writing on the website of the recently deceased liar/journalistic failure Andrew Breitbart. So much credibility here, behind Perez's comments!] Oh wait, did somebody say “credibility?”
Savage, as Hilton points out, has lost his credibility as an anti-bullying advocate with such actions.
OH REALLY? Tell that to the thousands of kids who send him letters telling him how much more hope they have now.
It wasn’t any of the big time celebrities who have endorsed and supported Savage’s It Gets Better Project who stood up against him. It wasn’t folks like Jane Lynch or Neil Patrick Harris or Josh Duhamel or James Marsden or Janet Jackson or Jennifer Love Hewitt or any of the dozens of other stars who could have done so.
[...]
It wasn’t the elected leaders who have used government resources to direct traffic to Savage’s program who stood up to Savage’s bullying here. It wasn’t President Obama orVice President Biden or Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack or the Department of Justice or the White House Staff or Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.
It was a gossip columnist.
You’re not helping your case, Tiny Wingnut. Lookit! All these smart people and it took a guy who draws penises on celebrities’ faces, for a job, to notice the problem!

You tell him, Evan!
Dan Savage is an irreverent, brutally frank and sometimes profane speaker.
So, when he’s invited to an event, why expect him NOT to be?!
And, generally, the LGBT have the moral high ground when it comes to how any of their number has been treated.
However brutally, like vulnerable children tormented to the point of suicide with anti gay epithets. Or when any of the community is murdered, the gay community responds non violently, and through due process of law and protest to have their grievances addressed.
Back talking at the hypocrisy of certain Christians is all it takes for them to walk out?!
He’s right.
There are plenty of Christians who haven’t had to answer to what their anti gay sentiment has done to real lives.
It’s a good bet that those who walked out on Savage, don’t have to look over their shoulders at a gang of thugs out to beat them to death for being Christian.
They don’t have to worry about leaving church and a gay man stalk a congregant OR their church for an attack.
Christians haven’t suffered nearly so much as they’ve dished out to a lot more than just gay folks.
Scolding gay folks who don’t always feel like smiling, joking and being polite is so misplaced.
The scold should go right where Dan Savage put it.
To the two faced, thin skinned so called ‘journalists’ who walked out and couldn’t handle the truth put before them.
You seriously want us to take sides between two media idiots, both of whose sole credentials are being ruthlessly ambitious and both of whom made their fortunes from peddling smut?
Seriously?
It was insane to have Savage speak to a group of high schoolers. Whoever made that decision is undoubtedly regretting it now. He can’t be trusted to conduct himself responsibly around adults, so what could anyone expect? He was a fool for playing into the hands of the religious right, but he’s not a smart man, so — surprise!
Hilton isn’t wrong. You can’t seriously suggest it is wrong to use honey instead of vinegar — or obscenities — when speaking to anyone, let alone children, when trying to win them over to your side. Hilton is a moron, but even he knows that!
Savage’s greatest PR coup was creating a YouTube channel that was designed to permanently cast him in the role of a hero, but he’s so astonishingly stupid he can’t even follow his own script. He’s no hero. He’s an idiot. He’s not wrong about christian hypocrisy, but he’s also not capable of expressing himself in public in a way that doesn’t undermine his own self-aggrandizing work.
Why attack or defend either one of these unfortunately inarticulate clowns, especially when — miracle of miracles — each of their core points are absolutely correct?
@Justme, you seem to have a chip on your shoulder for some reason.
Dan Savage’s point remains correct, Perez Hilton is an irrelevant fool, as is justme.
Perez Hilton is talking about CREDIBILITY?
Perez Hilton is lecturing anyone about KINDNESS?
Ha… Haha… Hahahahahahaha! Oh, that’s a good one, Evan!
Oh, wait — you didn’t make this up.
Next up: Mel Gibson admonishes the rest of the world to respect gays, Jews, and Malibu police officers, while admitting that maybe Vatican II wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
Justme–did Dan Savage snub you at a bar? Have you bothered to actually listed to what Dan said at this event? It’s available in an uncut form that is different than the selectively edited one played on Fox.
“Can’t we just be good and kind to each other? Isn’t faith in love and honesty and kindness all any of us really need?”
Really, what would that queen know about honesty and kindness?
Did you actually read what Perez wrote about Dan Savage on his blog? The post in question was not a condemnation of Dan Savage. Perez actually supported what Dan had to say.

@Kate, you make an extraordinarily fair point.
Having checked your link (I scrolled back through perez hilton dot com for a while looking for it but couldn’t find it when i wrote the piece), I see that Ben Shapiro, lying assclown that he is, severely edited Perez’s piece down to what he wanted it to say when he quoted it. I see that the purported loss of Ben’s virginity has done nothing for his ability to render the truth and thus will destroy him in print tomorrow.
This will be enjoyable, and I will use pictures of Ben to make it easier for people to make fun of him. Thanks, Kate!
No problem!
“Christians haven’t suffered nearly so much as they’ve dished out to a lot more than just gay folks.”
Are you KIDDING me, Regan DuCasse?! Try telling that to the people who have been tortured, raped, imprisoned, exiled, robbed, and beaten for their faith! Try telling that garbage to the families of Christians who have been MURDERED because of their faith!
You are one ignorant, clueless poster who needs to educate herself before she says something that’s even MORE stupid … IF that’s possible!
Guess what, Regan DuCasse? Bullying is NEVER okay, no matter WHO the targets are. And Dan Savage, whether you like it or not, is a bully! It’s a shame that you and other people are too busy hero-worshiping Dan to get that through your thick skulls!
Oh, Linda F., honey, get off that cross — somebody needs the wood.
And I’m sorry, Evan, if speaking the truth is equivalent to having a chip on your shoulder for you. That seems odd to me. But so does taking the side of someone who’s apologized for being wrong — if Savage admits he was wrong, why can’t you?
If your approach to the readers of your blog is that you question the motivation of dissent instead of the dissent itself, I’d suggest that you can do better. If you don’t want people questioning your admiration and defense of Savage, please make that clear or please stop posting about Savage. Either way, you’ll achieve that goal.
It’s your blog — just tell me the rules and I’ll happily follow them.
Linda F, are you talking about Ancient Rome? Certainly Christians haven’t been killed in this country for being Christian–unless they’ve been killed by other Christians.
And justme–I’m the one who questioned your motivations–Evan just picked up on the truth of my statement. You went out of your way to berate Dan Savage even in some stories that had nothing to do with him. No one stopped you from doing this–Why is it wrong to point it out?
Justme, Savage apologized for saying “pansy-assed,” but not the rest, which he did not need to apologize for.
