Progressive radio host David Pakman called Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC live on the air in the latest episode of the David Pakman Show. The church’s pastor, Sean Harris, infamously gave churchgoers a “special dispensation” last Sunday to beat their gender-nonconforming children in order to prevent them from being LGBT. Pakman pretended to have a son he was concerned about and sought advice from the church on just how far he was permitted to go in disciplining him.

This is terrifying. We struggle to understand what is going on over in the U.S. with all those right-wing nutters trying to emulate some Middle Eastern morals but we hope it’s not contagious.
Some people get into religion for the “right” reasons, like a grandmother who gets solace from it. Maybe she enjoys the music and finds the preaching inspirational.
Other people come to it because they believe their voice is on par with God’s. They’re religious narcissists. Those are the types that, once recognized, should make everybody run for the hills. They have a toxic, debilitating effect on their followers and cause great pain and misery. The “pastor” in question is of that type.
I am so proud of our community for standing up to this man and for revealing his shameful beliefs to the whole world. He will not change his beliefs, but he will likely never say such a thing again. I believe that many lives have been saved by this display of classic activism.
