The blogosphere is buzzing with rumors that President Obama, who will sit for a hastily-arranged interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts this afternoon, will officially endorse marriage equality today.
The New York Times, Politico, and others are reporting that the issue will be discussed at length, and that Roberts will press the President to clarify his position. Richard Socarides, who served as an LGBT adviser to the Clinton White House, told Politico, “I’m hopeful that the president is going to speak directly on this issue. When he does, I think it will be an important moment.”
A tweet from Marc Ambinder, White House correspondent for National Journal and contributing editor at The Atlantic, added fuel to the fire. Ambinder wrote: “So do I think President Obama will endorse same-sex marriage today? Yes. Yes I do.”
Not holding my breath here, but needless to say, if the evolution does happen today, it will be a watershed moment. We’ll keep you posted.

The pundits are all a flutter about what this vote in NC ‘means’ for the Obama campaign. Did anyone really think this amendment vote was *not* going to pass? Anyone who would not vote for Obama or a Democrat based solely on marriage equality are the same ones who would never vote for him anyway. I wish he would just do the right thing and give his full support to equality. It would make him look stronger, more decisive, and more *moral*. He has to stop trying to ‘work with’ people who hate his guts and ours.
Interesting comment, Gary.
>>He has to stop trying to ‘work with’ people who hate his guts and ours.<<
I bet you haven't looked in the mirror lately. Or listened to the rhetoric of your fellow gay ideologues lately.
Respect and cooperation is a TWO-WAY street. That's why you have lost this vote in 31 states.
I don’t see him supporting it today. I don’t think that’s what’s going on here. I would be amazed and overjoyed, even though I am willing to wait until after the election.
Gay sellout said “Respect and cooperation is a TWO-WAY street. That’s why you have lost this vote in 31 states.”.
LOL Bruce, this vote has been lost in 30 states because most of the people there believe gay people should be oppressed and forced into inferior status. LGBTs respecting the bigots wouldn’t have changed any of their votes.
Continuing to make my point… keep losing elections, madam.
>>LGBTs respecting the bigots wouldn’t have changed any of their votes.<<
Priya-
Please give me documented examples of state-sponsored “gay oppression” in those states.
Gracias.
Bruce, the marriage bans themselves.
Bruce…dont forget somethings, and I write this as a former conservative republican.
Conservative republicans are the immoral bigoted bad guys.
Not up for discussion or debate. They need to mature as human beings and improve themselves on Gay/womens/immigration issues. And Younger Americans are, and will continue to do so. Demographics is destiny.
You don’t try to make evil like you…you try to defeat and overcome evil. Simple as that.
If the President says this (offers support…the right and moral and decent thing to do), that will be great….but it will cost him the votes of some bigots.
Politics is an ugly game…hate to say it, but, it might be smarter to hedge his words and not commit yet…not till after Nov.
In any case, compared to a heretic bigot (well, he was not a bigot when it was convenient to be “more for gay rights” than Kennedy, but this is the point he has devolved to), Obama is the only choice to any thinking gay person, regardless of what he says today.
Marriage bans are not “oppression.”
Not being able to eat where you want – Oppression.
Being forced to the back of the bus – Oppression.
Having separate schools – Oppression.
Having the govt attack you with dogs – Oppression.
If you think not having marriage is “oppression”… take a trip to the Palestianian territories or Iran and see how they like The Gays.
>>Conservative republicans are the immoral bigoted bad guys.<<
Spoken like a true anti-Christian bigoted gay ideologue.
I am a Presbyterian Elder, you dimwit.
Apparently….
Bruce:
You are Exhibit A of how our oppression warps the brain. Your self-loathing knows no depths nor bounds. How does a toady “yes man” like yourself even look in the mirror?
Being told you are not a real couple the border entry agent, and seeing the horror and fear in your kids eyes – Oppression
Not being able to get medical insurance on a family plan and facing financial penalties for it…or even financial ruin (seen it happen) – Opression
wow…you think you are better than a terrorist state like Iran…you must be SO proud.
You are truly Pathetic.
Apparently…. what? Apparently you dont realize many major denominations are GLBT welcoming and affirming? Appearantly you did not think of how their religious rights are violated when they cannot perform legal binging marriages for their parishioners, but no conservative church will ever be forced to? (deapite fear mongering lying about that aside) Apparently you cannot grasp that all Christians are not homophobic, and fewer and fewer are each day?
Apparently…. ? ? ? ?
Wayne is right…your self hatred makes me truly, deeply, deeply pity you.
Bigots just just over 60 % of the vote on an anti gay amendment in the Deep South. A loss…pure and simple.
Three thoughts folks…from a deep southerner.
1) 10 years ago, this would have been 75% there. And I have read that it would have been worse this time, but even some anti equality voters were not pleased by the anti civil unions langauge.
2) California lost this by 2% last time. 52/48%. The vote before that was closer to this one in North Carolina. The trend, everywhere, is moving the right way.
3) some voters, when polled, will say they are not bigoted when in truth they are. This is sad, but a) it’s not THAT many people…in the single digits of the population b) they KNOW that their positions are no longer the ones decent, open minded people who understand what life in a Free country is supposed to be…and they are ashamed to say it to a pollster.
whats that old song? “Tiiiimmmmmeee, is on my side…yes it is!” :)
Bruce, the bigots voted against marriage equality because gays are icky. Giving them respect won’t change that. As long as you are open to having a same sex sexual relationship you are icky to them as well. They’re never going to like you Bruce no matter how much you kiss their behinds.
Somone here summed up your psychology perfectly:
“If I hate myself as much as you hate me, will you like me then?”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTuHN2T9A-s Bruce this is the official voice of the Republican party. Your opinion is invalid to the conservative party you, are not worthy of marriage according to them. If you fail to have the attention span to watch the video the gay issues are asked at 2:02. Yes if your conservative and gay your a contradiction because your own party hates you. OH also religious shots don’t phase me I don’t really care I’m a damned anti-theist who is going to hell… So when you tell me the left is evil and the republicans are the good guys this is what I imagine you look like http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/536583_4035255082373_1311592269_3725331_347495097_n.jpg
Bruce, it’s not oppression to you because you obviously don’t want to get married. Do you really think you are an American Patriot when your view of human rights is limited to “I don’t want the right to do _____; why would anybody else want that right?”
And using your logic, Bruce, I could just as easily say “so what’s the big deal about having to sit in the back of the bus?” Honestly, that seems a lot less of a big deal that not having the same rights as partners in life that all other partners enjoy.
Marriage means more than standing in front of any minister and kissing or vowing. Those who think that it is more of a public display than a private one will have a short time married anyway. They do what they think marriage is. Those of us who have studied, taken the time to listen and learn like our ministers take our privacy seriously. Also, for the history books same sex marriages have not brought the divorce rate down either so let’s talk educating for our future.
[...] the historic resolution, which comes on the heels of recent pro-marriage equality statements from President Barack Obama and hip-hop mogul Jay-Z. These developments, combined with recent reports [...]
