Truth Wins Out readers haven’t been too much apprised of the goings on the past week, at least in terms of my personal life, but I care about all y’all who come here and read every day, so I just wanted to share my joy with you. I almost lost my best buddy this week. My black lab/blue heeler mix, Lula. She’s only eight, but a couple of major health problems came together this week that really, if she hadn’t been in the hands of some of the best vets I’ve ever met, could have ended differently. She’s back now, if by “back,” you mean “totally drugged up on pain meds and has no clue what’s going on,” and I don’t get her back until Friday, but guess what? She’s back. She’s gonna be okay.
And you all may not have known this, but along with Wayne’s various animals, Lula is one of your TWO mascots. So.
This is the note I just stuck on my Facebook wall, to my silly, dumb dog, who will live to be a silly, dumb dog for years more:
hey stupidhead dog. you are totally recovering from surgery right now, in Mississippi. we dodged a bullet, I think, me and you. you had a damn corn cob in your intestine and also a giant infection affecting several of your best organs. i’m gonna see you soon, and I’m really glad, because I was definitely not ready to lose your dumb ass, and also because I know you have many more millions of things to bark at and poop toward, and also because I love you and you’re my best buddy.
And I want her to be y’all’s buddy too. Here’s Lula, totally not caring enough to really pose for the camera.
My girl. Gonna be okay.
I’ll be back with my trademark snarky whatever in a few. Until then, hug your furry buddies if you have them.

I am so happy for you!! I had to put down my baby, a lab/springer mix, a couple weeks ago so I know how devastating the fear of losing your best friend can be.
She’s beautiful! My sister just got a black lab mix rescue dog from Mississippi. She was found running the roads, skin and bones and some filthy scum bad shot 6 bee bees into her hind leg. She was nursed back to health and was brought up north in a caravan of rescued animals. My sister drove from VT (Rutland, Wayne) to NH to pick her up. I met her (Ginger) over the weekend and she is one of the most affectionate, loving dogs I have ever met; considering how horribly she was treated in the early months of her life. She is about 6-8 months old.
Also, if anyone is considering getting a rescue dog PLEASE consider getting a black dog. For some reason they are often passed over either because they look dangerous or due to superstition. More black dogs are euthanized than any other color (I assume the same is true for cats.)
May Lula continue to have a long happy life!
Pretty dog! I’m happy she is going to be okay.
That’s a beautiful puppy. And you are well on your way to being totally, completely under your puppy’s paw. My Shih Tzu rules the house.
Oh, wow. I’m so glad to hear that she’s going to be okay. I lost my doggie buddy/guru in October after almost 15 years together. I miss her still and yes, I still cry about her. Photos of her here, if you’re a dog lover: http://andimarquette.com/2011/11/01/journeys/
And GO, LULA! WOOOOOO!
I miss my Boxer boy Kevin!
I grew up with a beautiful boy, the family’s black Lab. He was handsome and wonderful and he blessed our lives for 14 years.
Your girl is a beauty! These are our friends, loved ones.
So loved.
They give us a lot, don’t they? No matter what we look like, our orientation. Whether we’re male or female, young or old, sick or healthy.
Furry friends don’t make the same judgements we do and we’re healthier learning something about that.
Go Lula, YOUR best friend is there for ya girl!
And RHONDA, I am so sorry for your loss. My heart is with you.
To bad you can teach a dog to chew his food 12 times before they swallow, huh?
Srlsy glad she will recover.
Great to hear you pup is going to be ok Evan. She’s beautiful. You also have to be careful with rawhide bones because they’ve been known to also get swallowed and stuck in their intestines.
They are such a part of the family. I don’t know what I’d do without mine. They bring so much joy to life. I can see why they say pets can add years onto your life.
So happy to hear some good news. Best of luck
Thanks for all your support, y’all :)
Yeah, she got a corn cob in her stomach. It was actually the fault of my roommate, but I don’t want to harp on that, except to say, you know, there’s a reason why vets tell you not to throw just any old s**t to your dogs. I know exactly when Lula “got into something,” and it was last Wednesday night, late, and I couldn’t see exactly what she was getting into. Apparently my roommate, who also threw his dog half of a pizza yesterday morning (pancreatitis calling?), threw scraps into the yard and one of those scraps was a corn cob.
Anyway. And there was also a massive kidney infection, which may or may not have been related to the blockage. Regardless, it’s good that I got her in there when I did. Both issues could and would have killed her.
But she’s okay ;)
(Also, I’m moving.)
Your roommate sounds kind of not-so-bright.
