U.S. House Republicans voted Friday to add a provision onto a defense bill that would ban pro-equality clergy and denominations from celebrating same-sex marriages at military chapels. The LA Times reports.
This move is just the latest in a long history of social-conservative restrictions upon the freedom of religious minorities — Jews, Muslims, atheists, Buddhists, and liberal Christians — in the armed services. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation uncovers new violations of religious freedom in the U.S. armed services on a weekly basis.

The mantra of the Republicant party is “freedom, freedom, freedom.” But the freedom is never for the individual unless the individual is rich. “Religious freedom” for Republicants and their right wing hangers on (and that includes the RC bishops and conservative religious leaders) means the license for them to impose their moral and religious and social norms on everyone else. “Liberty” University anyone?
I live in Cambodia and some Cambodians think THEIR government is corrupt!
No wonder in times past, kings and politicians who used religion to intimidate the masses often ended up losing their heads.
The American masses aren’t angry enough yet, but if this kind of bigotry continues, they will be.

This is disgusting. These right wing Xtianist freaks need to leave GLBT alone. Just another good reason to vote out as many Rethugs as possible this November.
Religious freedom: Freedom for me to dominate thee.
I don’t see that this has anything to do with religious freedom. While I, as well as anyone else, realizes that the conservatives have no love for us and will do anything within their power to show their disapproval, the fact remains that the federal government does not, as yet, recognize marriages between people of the same sex. That being the case, one can’t seriously expect them to allow same-sex marriages/celebrations to take place on military property which is owned and operated by the taxpaying public. Wish that it were acceptable, but that is not the current reality.
@Jerry: There will never be enough Americans who hate their politicians enough for there to be an anti-religion backlash. Too many in the US are totally addicted to tribal Jewish mythology to ever make a difference.
