While some of my Facebook friends are busy clicking “Like” on virtual causes and signing virtual petitions on behalf of struggling organizations, causes that they oppose are securing billions in donations. And, ladies and gentlemen, it is money — not the Like button — that determines the course of election campaigns and legislative agendas. Virtually nothing in life that is worthwhile — least of all, political power — is free.
The Washington Post reports that conservatives are outspending liberals 4-to-1 on the all-important congressional races which will determine whether the next president can accomplish anything, and whether the nation will move toward a freer, more frugal, and more intelligent future — or sell out our children’s lives and health for the present-day prosperity of military contractors, obsolete industries, and the AARP.
If you “like” a cause, but you aren’t financially supporting it, and as a result the cause is buried by better-funded opponents, then is it fair to say that you really liked it after all?

Sometimes the best we can offer is a like.
Right now, I am at the beginning of a contested divorce battle and sinking my money into a lawyer has left me with negative cash flow, unpaid credit cards, and questions about how I am going to feed myself and the kids.
Christine, right now it sounds like you just need to get through this. I hope for the best for you. But, for people who are not in crisis but still don’t have much money to donate there is much that can be done. Every candidate needs people to make phone calls, stuff envelopes, do data entry, knock on doors. There are still voter registration drives in some parts of the country. Yes, money is needed, but so is volunteer time.
Karen is right. Even though $ is very important, I heard a politician on tv recently say that ‘personal phone calls’ have a tremendous impact on influencing people to get and vote for your candidate. I assume this excludes those annoying robo-calls which most people, myself included, just hang up on.
Face it, we never get fair treatment in our justice system when confronting false claims and theories regarding sexual orientation. Frankly, I’m sick and tired of bogus organizations using us as a “fundraiser” for their anti-gay causes. If it was up to me, I’d send these people to a distant planet where they can destroy each other.
