Two of my favorite girls actually got married in Washington DC the other day, so it’s fun to see that Mary Cheney, daughter of Dick Cheney, ALSO got married in Washington this week:
Dick Cheney is celebrating the marriage of his daughter Mary to her longtime partner, Heather Poe.
In a statement issue by Cheney and his wife, Lynne, said, ”Our daughter Mary and her long time partner, Heather Poe, were married today in Washington, DC. Mary and Heather have been in a committed relationship for many years, and we are delighted that they were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have that relationship recognized.”
The former vice president added, “Mary and Heather and their children are very important and much loved members of our family and we wish them every happiness.”
Good for them! Now if the rest of the Republican Party would just get over its nonsense on this issue. Republican families have gay kids too! Lots of them!

The REAL Threat to the Sanctity of Marriage (Not Gays)

Social conservatives distracted by gay marriage are missing the big picture

Fake conservatives like the Cheney family should not be the issue (that’s another story). It is just as much government’s role to marry as it is to Baptize , give Communion, or Bar Mitzvah someone.
Gay couples are targeting the wrong institution, all for government benefits.
Religion has no ownership to the institution of marriage. You know this, right?
Aulton,
Some background information to back up your statement that “Religion has no ownership to the institution of marriage.”
Where do people go to get marriage licenses? To a church? To a synagogue? To a mosque? To a temple? Where do atheists go to get marriage licenses and to get married?
A couple can get married in this country in a religious institution with the presence of a religious official, but if they do not have a marriage license when they go through the ceremony – though they might be considered married in the eyes of the religious institution – they are not considered to be married legally by the state and they are not entitled to the benefits nor or they bound by the obligations of the law.
In many countries people have to get married in a civil ceremony before they get married in a religious ceremony. This country has an exception allowing religious officials to be delegated to officiate at the ceremony, but without the license, the couple are not married.
Furthermore, if one investigates the history of the involvement of Christian churches in the institution of marriage, s/he will find the churches were not involved in most marriage ceremonies for thousands of years. Through in some early centuries they were involved in some ceremonies of blessing for wealthy couples after the couples had entered into civil marriages according to the laws and customs of their time. They were also involved in the blessings of some same sex couples for quite a number of centuries. But marriage was not even considered a sacrament by Christian churches for thousands of years.
It seems that proponents of marriage as a religious institution have either forgotten or have never learned these historical facts.
