I’m not at all exaggerating with that headline. Linda Harvey, the most unhingedly homophobic woman in America, is really unhappy with Alan Chambers. Why? Because he told the truth, namely, that he still likes dudes. Here’s what she had to say:
The group’s president, Alan Chambers, has been under a firestorm of criticism lately because of several statements he has made lately that reflect poorly on his understanding of the basics of Christian faith.
For one, Chambers has said he doesn’t believe a person can change his or her so-called sexual orientation. Now, there’s not anything like this invented term called “sexual orientation” in Scripture in the first place, but then he also says that he still struggles himself with sexual feelings for other males. This shows very poor judgment as the leader of this ministry to, first of all, be experiencing this and secondly, to announce it to the whole world.
Oh, Linda. If sexual orientation isn’t in scripture, it doesn’t exist! Neither, for that matter, do airplanes, diabetes or baby carrots. I also love how she faults him for actually experiencing it. What an emotionally bereft bigot. Earth to Linda: they all experience it. Because they’re still gay.
Of course a person can leave homosexuality; there are thousands of people who have done it and God’s word clearly states that he can deliver us from sin. And the proud, open sinner who is publicly proclaiming it as good in defiance of God’s word? It is highly questionable that such a person is saved.
And Alan Chambers is telling you that 99.9% of those people who have “left homosexuality” are still attracted to the same gender. Much as you have built a career and made somewhat of a name for yourself doing so, you are not entitled to your own reality, Linda.
We would not be making this exception for well-adjusted adulterers would we? How about a compassionate pedophile? What about incest like two brothers involved in homosexuality? Why not just defy God’s word on this?
What I really love here is that she’s giving up one of the great fundamentalist Christian lies. They always say they love gay people, but “hate the sin,” and that they’re okay with us as long as we’re celibate/don’t “embrace the homosexual lifestyle.” Well, here we have Alan Chambers, who does not consider himself gay, and who is married to a woman, but who is being honest about the fact that he’s still attracted to men, and Linda’s response is pure hatred. Perhaps Alan Chambers will see comments like hers and have a little lightbulb moment about the awful crowd he’s been associating with.
This is plain old rebellion and worship of self and our own impulses, not the worship of our Creator and Savior. Please join me in praying for Alan Chambers and Exodus, but also in praying for Alan’s influence to diminish unless he recants this untruthful misrepresentation of the Gospel.
All he did was share his own reality and the reality of the people he’s worked with. (Finally!) That’s not good enough for Linda Harvey. She would like him to recant and start lying again. After all, it’s worked for her! I doubt he will do so, as, at least in this instance (and we are not going soft on Alan Chambers, by the way), he has shown himself to have some semblance of a moral compass. Linda has not.

Empress of integrity? More like battle-axe of bilge.
Linda Harvey is a horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible person.
God has given angry anti-gay activist Harvey up to a reprobate mind. Sadly she can no longer distinguish between right and wrong. I will pray for her. And while I’m doing that, maybe she can show us the “thousands” of “ex-gays?” Where are they? Why do we just hear from the ones who are being paid to say what pleases unrepentant homophobes?
Michael – they’re hiding behind her couch and under the stairs – thousands of them…… It drives her nuts.
This is why infighting is funny.
“Of course a person can leave homosexuality; there are thousands of people who have done it and God’s word clearly states that he can deliver us from sin.”
None of these “God wants you to change your sexual orientation and Jesus can heal you” Christian people ever makes any attempt to point to any passage in the Gospels where Jesus actually “healed” anyone with a sexual orientation or even a pattern of same sex behaviors (which they call sins). Of course, there is no record that Jesus ever called same sex behaviors sin, and there is no record that he ever “healed” anyone who either was in a same sex relationship (the Centurion and his male servant perhaps) or who performed sexual behaviors with another person of the same gender.
They never cite Jesus, only some Old Testament passages and some obscure passages in letters attributed to Paul.
It’s amazing how the bigots get in a tizzy when they hear the truth–particularly from one of their own.
@Michael: “God has given angry anti-gay activist Harvey up to a reprobate mind.”
This is EXACTLY what Bryan Fischer says about us. This is EXACTLY why he says he doesn’t need to listen to us or be reasonable with us. You using the EXACT same rationale to criticize our detractors makes YOU sound EXACTLY as crazy. It’s just some Biblical version of “I’m rubber, you’re glue…”
It exasperates me NO END when gay Christians use the same rhetoric as the wing nuts – first of all because it fails to elevate the discussion into any sort of compassionate discourse, secondly because it is JUST AS CRAZY, and thirdly because IT STILL GETS USED against the non-Christian gay (or the Not-the-right-kind-of-Christian gay).
You may believe your statements with all your heart, but fergoshsake’s find a more elevated theology to refute them with that doesn’t boil down to “nuh-uh, YOU are.”
OldBaldGuy, I’m pretty sure Michael was being sarcastic.
Old Bald Guy. It is perfectly reasonable to use their arguments against us against them, if they fit. Nobody is trying to “elevate the discussion into any sort of compassionate discourse” with these people because it is impossible to have either a compassionate or a rational conversation with them. Turning the tables on their arguments is to help persuade the moveable middle, people who don’t know any GLBT people and who might be susceptible to the harangues of wingnuts about us if left uncontested. You’ll never convince the wingnuts themselves; just help others to see how irrational and self-serving they are.
Elevated theology? How do you elevate the discussion about what an invisible and unprovable bronze-age diety supposedly had some of his followers write about what he allegedly wants us to do in their 2000-2500 year old book? Especially when a number of those things don’t pass muster as good and moral two millennia later. Any theology is a total waste of time.
Ms Bonkers speaks of the “thousands” of ex-fags (like we’ve never heard that before). However, just like her compatriots, she can’t produce even one certifiably changed gay man. I love it when they drag out that nonsense about thus and such not being scriptural. Like that makes any sense in the real world. For heaven’s sake, Ms Bonkers, stick you head back up your a*s so we won’t have to hear you.
Horrible Harvey doesn’t even understand the ‘basics’ of common human decency let alone the ‘basics of Christian faith’. Love your neighbor as yourself is the bedrock linda, not treat your neighbor like a piece of $h1t if you don’t like something about them.
