I will be on this evening to discuss the anti-gay policies of Chick-fil-a. As many of you know, $3 million in contributions were made by Dan Cathy’s family foundation to anti-gay organizations such as the Family Research Council and Exodus International, according to Equality Matters.

Wayne Besen is the Founding Executive Director of Truth Wins Out and author of “Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth” (Haworth, 2003). In 2010, Besen was awarded the “Visionary Award” at the Out Music Awards for organizing the American Prayer Hour, an event which shined a spotlight on the role American evangelicals played in the introduction of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill.

Wayne, I know you’re quite capable on this, but I do want to say that I hope you’ll point out exactly what the problem with Cathy’s statement is. This is something that I posted elsewhere, but it has the point in it that I want to make.

(His version of god– not mine– with whom Cathy is intimate, who just happens to agree with Cathy. God has offered no comment on the insult or the hubris).
I am offending the Holy of Holies, the Creator of the Universe. My request/demand that my government treat my life, love, family, children, assets, AND MY RELIGIOUS FAITH, as it does all other citizens is so offensive to him/God, that God will send his wrath upon the country, making MILLIONS of innocent people, suffer for my offense.
This makes me a worse threat than terrorism, Wall Street, the Republicans, Atheism, and Paris Hilton.
It bears reiteration. Only the worst kind of sin and the worst kind of sinner is so vile, so horrible, that god himself is going to be insulted. My sin is so offensive that god would do what he never bothered To do with the crusades, witch burning, war, the holocaust, slavery, murder, starvation, poverty, or any of the other ills.
Cathy, being the kind of Christian he is– a Christain’t, a so-called Christian, A Pharasitical Christian– purports to know the mind of God, to know the relationship to god to any other human being on the planet, and feels competent to render his judgment, IN EXPRESS VIOLATION OF JESUS’S COMMANDMENT NOT TO.
Mr. Cathy seats himself on God’s throne. Remember the last being that did that, and the consequences for innocent people.
THOSE are his sincere religious beliefs. If he crapped out this nonsense about any other group of people– buddhists, for example, who reject the entirety of his religious beliefs, not just the antigay pArt– we would call his words BIGOTRY of the worst sort.
Why is this any different?

Please point out that there is a huge difference between Cathy making such donations as a private person and making them in the name of the company.

I listened to Wayne this evening and was quite appalled by his apparent ignorance of free speech. FACT: The CEO of Chick-Fil-A has EVERY right under the First Amendment to voice his opinions. If you or anyone else doesn’t like it then you don’t have to visit his restaurants. But for elected political figures such as Mayor Mumbles Menino of Boston to say Chick-Fil-A is not welcome in his city is idiocy. Apparently, the Mayor is unaware that as long as Chick-Fil-A can legally open a restaurant by complying with all building/zoning codes, etc., Menino has NO SAY on the subject. This kind of moronic posturing for political purposes confirms my belief that he and others like him are clueless as to what this country was originally founded upon.

Mr. Besen I’m not gay but my sister is and I stood up for her at her wedding. She is a great person and actually volunteers to help others. Your comments about Chick F-Fila are a little out of line, he as an individual has aright to his opnions and his beliefs as do you. Mr Cathy runs a good chain of resteraunts and actually their chicken is less greasy than KFC, and they take better care and treat their employees Gay or Straight far better than any other fast food chain. My friends son was given their scholarships and would not be a Doctor today because his parents were poor.
If you want to gain ground with the straight community you should tone down your retoric and be tolerent of others as you would like for them to be tolerent of you. There is good in all people and you should fined out the good things the Cathy’s have done other swho are less fortunate before you judge them. Mr. Wayne Besen invites the population to express themselves as a right of freedom of speech, but appears not to like it when comments are made about his lifestyle and those for whom he advocates. The Salvation Army has the RIGHT to hire and fire those that fail to meet their standards. In my long life I have experienced contacts with homosexuals, whom I found to be very aggressive. To claim that they are passive is pure BS. I doubt that Mr. Besen would support an anti-gay pride parade, forgetting his freedom of expression claim. In watching the program on Fox, I found him to be full of himself and IT and a total jerk.

Watched Mr. Besen tonite on O’reilly and have a comment. I, Mr. Besen, will NOT spend my money at Home Depot and about 10 other organizations that donate money to homosexual based organizations. You want to strike out at a person who gives his personal money to people who believe like he does and I will strike out and NOT give my money to people who actively go against what the Bible teaches, and what I believe. I already have about 22 families that believe as I do and we will fight fire with fire.
Today I went to a Chick- fill- a and bought 10 twenty dollar gift cards as a symbol of my support for Mr. Cathy ! I, in turn, donated these to a homosexual organization. Hows this – if they use them they support Mr. Cathy — if they don’t he evens makes more money ! Irony isn’t it.

Chick-fil-A has always been my favorite restaurant. Excellent food, always clean, and employer of decent, hard-working young people. I also enjoy the family atmosphere of the restaurant. I applaud Cathy for speaking out against the militant homosexual liberals and their shameful perverted lifestyle. The fact that Chick-fil-A has now become a place to eat my meal in peaceful segregation from homosexual perverts will certainly encourage me to patronize and support their business even more.
Funny – Today is the first time I have eaten at Chick-fil-a. It wasn’t greasy, was delicious and had the benefits str8athist made above ! Won’t be the last time I eat there, even tho the closest one is 50 miles away.

Wayne, you did a great job. But the interviewer wasn’t just playing the Devil’s Advocate, as some interviewers do. She was excusing Cathy’s statements and political actions as just a differing political view on a par with different opinions about the economy, instead of a stance against our civil rights on a par with antisemitism or racism or sexism.
It’s really odd and quite offensive the way these self described “christians,” such as Dan Cathy and some of the commenters on this post, speak so hatefully about us and act to undermine and fight our rights, and then expect that we should just roll over and apologize for our very existence. We’re called “militant homosexuals” for standing up for our rights, as though we are being offensive ourselves. (Although I actually like the term “militant homosexuals. Before you leap to the defense of any company or organization that claims to be Christian or pro-family, I encourage you to take a hard look at them. Then rethink why you’re so angry at those of us who oppose molestation, execution, contempt for parents, and hatred toward working mothers.
