Folks, this is exactly the kind of fundie barbarism we have been warning about for years at Truth Wins Out. Our opponents really do want to take us back to the Pre-Enlightenment days.
The purpose of Truth Wins out is to not let them. It is our view that America, and the world, are better off in the 21st Century.
We should all take pause and realize these are the types of Neanderthals we are sending to Capitol Hill.
Apparently, Akin isn’t so good on LGBT equality either:
Missouri GOP Congressman and Senate hopeful Todd Akin, who this weekend claimed that “legitimate rape” rarely led to pregnancy when discussing a woman’s right to choose, has an equally abysmal track record on issues of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) equality. The Human Rights Campaign is joining with PROMO, Missouri’s statewide LGBT advocacy organization, in condemning Akin’s remarks and his anti-LGBT history.
“Todd Akin displayed a shockingly cold ignorance to the victims of rape this past weekend, and that’s an ignorance that unfortunately extends to his views of LGBT people as well,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “Over the last decade, Akin has been one of the leading voices in the House working against the best interests of LGBT people – he’s against any kind of relationship recognition for same-sex couples; he’s made remarks that are demeaning to LGBT families; he voted against the historic repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and he refuses to support workplace protections. Todd Akin is no friend to anyone who has experienced discrimination and is looking to their elected officials to protect their rights under the law.”

Even as a gay man, I know if a woman is penetrated by a man, she can become pregnant. Not only does this ignoramus base his information on 17th century data, he doesn’t even know basic human biology. This man scares me more than anything because you have to wonder how many other Republican men “think” like him and then vote on women’s reproduction issues. Again, how does any woman or any other reasonable person vote for someone like this? Can you imagine what he thinks of gay people?
He probably got the idea from these whackos:

Needless to say the 30+ year old research they cite doesn’t actually say what they claim it does.
Thanks for the link Boo
Boo, I heard Akin’s assertion years ago and never knew where it came from. This would explain the origin.
It’s scary how many troglodytes like him are in positions of power.
This has had me hiding out in the Angry Dome for a couple of days, now.
I can’t even begin to grok the idea of “legitimate rape”.
Was mine not “really” rape because I was coerced into consenting to something I did not want to do, and did not enjoy doing?
Or was it because I was engaged to my rapist at the time?
Did his manipulations and lies and violence (all of which served to keep me silent and submissive) somehow invalidate the rest of the abuses I suffered at his hand?
Yeah, I laid there and took it. But fighting wasn’t exactly an option — 4’11 and disabled little old me and 6′-something twice-my-weight-if-not-more able-bodied assailant — and I knew he had a habit of getting violent over the most unreasonable sh…tuff.
WMDKitty,
First, I’m sorry for what you went through and I hope that you are in a better place and that he is where he deserves to be (prison).
Second, I was thinking the same thing. What the is “legitimate rape”? Rape is nonconsensual sex. Period. It doesn’t matter if the person has a gun to your head or if you are too drunk to understand what is happening or if you have been manipulated into accepting it. If you don’t want it, it is rape. Akin shouldn’t ever be in a position of authority if he can’t understand that.
Third, I demand to know what doctor told him that and unless that doctor immediately shows that he was misquoted, he should lose his license to practice medicine on the grounds of stupidity.
From the Physicians article, the “legitimate rape” thing appears to be based on the bizarre idea that statutory rape is not traumatic.
