Salvatore Cordileone, archbishop-elect of San Francisco, said in a recent interview that gay and lesbian Catholics in sexual relationships of any kind should not present themselves for the Sacrament of Holy Communion, the holiest sacrament of the Catholic church. The Los Angeles Times reports:
. . .in a recent interview at the headquarters of the Oakland diocese, where he has served as bishop for three years, Cordileone was more direct: Gays and lesbians who are in sexual relationships of any kind, he said, should not receive the sacrament of Holy Communion, the central ritual of Catholic life.
“If we misuse the gift of sexuality, we’re going to suffer the consequences,” he said, “and I firmly believe we are suffering the consequences.”
Cordileone, who was arrested last month on drunk driving charges, then elaborated, puzzlingly appearing to blame same-sex couples for the problem of absentee fathers in the inner city:
The prelate’s light-filled office overlooks Oakland’s Lake Merritt. Just beyond the graceful urban estuary, he said, are “100 blocks of inner-city neighborhoods. Those are fatherless children.”
Archbishop-elect Cordileone was appointed in July by Pope Benedict XVI to head the San Francisco Archdiocese in a move widely seen as a thumb in the eye to the LGBT civil rights movement. He assumes the new position on October 4.

Assume the position…. I like that.
He’s also an idiot. The Pope is probably getting even with him for something.
He’s saying this while he’s the Archbishop of San Francisco?? He has to know what kind of reaction he’s going to get for coming off with a thing like that.
Oh John, be merciful. You know he’s sexually frustrated and jealous of how comparatively good the non-closeted LGBTQ people have it.
A message to Salvatore Cordileone: “Archbishops should not drive when they drink.”
I think this is great. I hope no gay person gives this bigoted Church a cent.
I strongly urge all Roman Catholics to leave the Church and seek communion in the Episcopal Church — the Apostolic lineages are legitimate by any standards considering that an RC archbishop went rouge in the 50s and reconsecrated some Anglican bishops before his right to do so could be revoked, which has led to every Episcopal bishop now having legitimate lineage even by an honest assessment from a Catholic.
Seek out a high church parish, the ritual may even be (depending on where you are) more high church than Rome these days — and unless you find one of the tiny number of break away parishes — gays are welcomed.
Reyn
Closeted priests should not be allowed to give OR receive communion!
As far as I can determine from the evidence, there’s no need for professing Catholics to keep receiving the Eucharist over and over again in any case. I believe it can be treated as a one-time “Sacrament of Initiation” — precisely like Baptism and Confirmation, which are only received once. Jesus reportedly said: “Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you shall not have life within you”. Fine, but what Jesus stipulated is clearly covered by the Initiation Rite of First Communion. Of course you’re free to keep “doing it” as often as you want to — but based on a literal reading of Jesus’ own words, it simply isn’t necessary. Repeatedly receiving Communion is certainly an option of personal choice, but not a formal requirement. BTW, why does the name “Cordeleone” set off an alarm bell? (Exit humming the theme from “The Godfather”….LMAO!)
Don’t worry, things will immediately get better once Darth Vader lifts the Pope over his head and chucks him down that deep air-shaft in his throne room.
Quite the slam against fathers in his San Diego neighborhood: 100 blocks filled with people, no dads to be found.
Truly ugly.
I don’t care what the numbers are, or how many “fatherless children” (uhmmm, by his own definitions, that’s not possible, eh?) he has known, that’s a lousy way to demonstrate his support for families.
On the lighter side, it’s time to start calling dual-dad families “fatherfull,” don’t you think?

Communion is just another rite left over from a dark time when the supernatural ruled and reason was dead. Why anyone would want to parttake in it is beyond me. Who knows where the priest’s hands were before he touched the host that he inserts into one’s mouth. And the idea of slurping wine from a communal chalice gives me the shudders, and I am not even much of a germophobe. All this ex-catholic-lite guys likes is the huge beautiful cathedrals, architectural gems attesting to the engineering and artistic skills of human builders and creators, so i will still set foot in the church as long as i can take pictures!!
I guess Cordileone will be exempting himself from Communion. When he was arrested for DUI a couple weeks ago he was just about to drop off his Mama, leaving him alone with a male student late at night.
John M. Becker, the Archbishop did NOT prohibit ‘LGBTs’ from partaking Communion, only gays and lesbians “in a relationship”. Gays and lesbians in sham-hetero marriages are fine (although telling or living lies, assumably is not, so go figure), as are Bisexuals in a straight relationship. And he said absolutely NOTHING about Trans people (although his boss has stated that they should be “removed from the human ecology” so there’s no love lost there).
Starting in about 381, The Church has taken a religion based on liberal, progressive, socialist, loving values and turned it into a weapon of conquest and control. They’ve used hatred and separation to place themselves above civil laws and acquire massive wealth and power. In short, the Church is Evil and exactly what Jesus warned his followers about.

what can you say? he needs prayers. if that is what he really thinks than he probably should just excommunicate everybody because even thinking about hanky panky is a mortal sin. and anybody who says they aren’t thinking about it is dead or lying. i guess he could let babies communicate :-)
he knows what he’s saying contradicts the bible itself. so he’ll be judged by his own judgement and there fore as i said before needs prayers.
Why any LGBT Roman Catholic would want to remain in that church is beyond me. There other churches that will welcome them.
