Accepting that one is same-sex-attracted is equivalent to being addicted to pornography, according to Exodus President Alan Chambers.

In his August 2008 “President’s Letter,” Chambers writes:

While my friend John hasn’t battled same-sex attractions, he personally understands sexual addiction as he was embroiled in a deep struggle with pornography for a few years. At one point his wife found out. Unfortunately, like many, they didn’t tell anyone because of fear and shame. That’s the same reason why I waited so long to share my struggles.

A couple of years ago that all changed for my friend John and his wife Joy when they began sharing their story of freedom.

Exodus cheapens true freedom and erodes serious discussion about sexual addiction when it conflates unrelated issues — and when it refuses to specify the kind of “freedom” that it offers to “ex-gays”:

“Freedom” to Exodus means freedom from sexuality, freedom from honesty, freedom from intimate relationship, and freedom from having openly gay neighbors or co-workers.

  1. The reason why homosexuality = sexual addiction to Exodus and their ilk is because they are addicted to being attracted to the same sex. It’s sort of true, on some level - you’re not feeling attracted to the opposite sex, only the same sex. But their basic misunderstanding of addiction equates simple attraction to life-interupting destructive habits.

  2. Alan Chambers and probably most ex-gays should know all about addiction because they are addicted to fanatical religion. And that seems consistent with the stories many of them tell about the nature of their lives if/when they were involved in the so-called “gay lifestyle.” They have just substituted religious addiction for one or more others, and are probably not even aware of their addictive personalities.

Religious addiction would seem nearly impossible to recognize by those involved because, after all, “how could living to please a god ever be wrong?” There is nothing quite like having the backing of a god to provide certainty to the rightness of your opinions and actions. And that is what makes religious addiction so insidious.

    -As in, HUMAN-sexuality “ADDICTION.”

And as Richard Rush seems to allude to, they’ve just substituted one addiction for another - without even realizing it.
