Wayne Besen is the Founding Executive Director of Truth Wins Out and author of “Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth” (Haworth, 2003). In 2010, Besen was awarded the “Visionary Award” at the Out Music Awards for organizing the American Prayer Hour, an event which shined a spotlight on the role American evangelicals played in the introduction of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill.

Fischer is a sort of mascot opponent among modestly sized news programs and he will fade away when loses his anti-gay cause, just as racist spokesmen disappeared from mainstream media following the success of the black civil rights movement.
In the mean time, Fischer serves as a sort of living strawman by championing an in-defensible position. I suspect that the cause of marriage equality has been aided by similar opponents who have alienated or shocked undecided viewers through their dark, strange logic.
