There is something profoundly wrong with Mission America’s Linda Harvey. The vitriol and invective aimed at the LGBT kids by the most homophobic woman in America is unnatural and even perverse. She has even compared homosexuality to overeating in a hate booklet she penned.
Clearly, she has unresolved issues and some personal hangups that she seriously needs to deal with. Truth Wins Out would be pleased to offer her the names of a few good therapists in the Columbus, Ohio area, if she ever breaks down and feels the need to talk to a qualified mental health professional.
Right Wing Watch reports on a gay bashing rampage led by Harvey on her radio program. She claimed that “if schools allow views on homosexuality to be aired at all, then it always shall be to discourage this behavior and these false identities,” and that schools should make gay students “get the counseling they need.” According to the silver tongued serpent:
We teach our children not to be bystanders if they see someone bullied, likewise responsible grownups should not be bystanders as children are presented harmful, misleading and increasingly corrupting ideas. For instance, should a school allow explicit pro-abortion t-shirts? Absolutely not, because even most liberals know in their heart that abortion is a horrible practice, in fact they do everything they can to keep blinders on about its reality so their consciences don’t have to wrestle with the violence involved. There is objective truth, right and wrong, and sometimes our schools seem to have forgotten that. The same is true about homosexuality, if schools allow views on homosexuality to be aired at all, then it always shall be to discourage this behavior and these false identities. If the truth was being told about this behavior, it would be obvious why it should be discouraged and any teen struggling with these feelings would get the counseling they need.
While responsible adults in America are working at suicide prevention for LGBT youth, Ms. Harvey continues to embark on her suicide promotion tour. The only question left: will she sell trendy T-shirts for her show?

Well, if she does decide to visit a therapist, I hope s/he’s in a strip mall near a really good dermatologist, too.
I’m all for giving LGBT students counseling, if they need it to learn how to deal with bullying and oppression and rejection from people like Linda. I’m all for giving them the counseling they need to deal with and accept their sexuality if they are having problems. I’m all for giving them counseling for any psychological needs they might have. And I’m all for letting them and their parents know how to legally fight schools that will not protect them and encourage them and keep them safe.
I am hopeful for the future as so many of these anti gay vigilantees are old. The generations behind me are better than my generation. There really is no excuse either for any of us who lived through the black civil rights era. We have seen this hatred and intolerance and bigotry and discrimination before. The only difference is that the target has changed.
She conflates homosexuality with overeating, but we have to eat; so does this mean she thinks it’s ok if we have gay sex in moderation? >:P
Besides, in America, where everyday is Thanksgiving, comparing homosexuality with overeating would probably entice many to give it a try.
ps..Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
I just recently read an article that covered, very nicely, some of the history of homosexuality (Alex Ross, “Love on the March,” in the New Yorker). One salient point:
“The American divorce rate climbed steeply in the first part of the twentieth century, hitting an early peak in 1945. In this same period, homophobia intensified into official policy. The two developments may not be unrelated: a largely Christian nation, having abandoned Jesus’ teachings on divorce, reinforced its moral credentials at the expense of a friendless minority.”
I think there’s a lot of truth to this statement.
When I see people like Linda Harvey, Maggie Gallagher or Michelle Bachman who so obviously have personal mental health issues we can all speculate on, likely the infidelity of a closeted gay spouse, or feelings of same sex attraction within themselves I feel pity for them. That pity lasts about 2 seconds and then is replaced with frustration with them of course be even more so with society. That we (myself included) as a people, continue to unwittingly lend credence to their ridiculous claims but also elevating them and their hateful messages by repeating or reprinting them. These people are delusional, self absorbed and in denial about their own shortcomings so they fixate on others, for the reasons I described above. If we take away their mic/keyboard, their messages will be heard/read by much smaller audiences and slowly they will return to the rock they climbed out from under. No disrespect intended but I really think highlighting their idiocy and misinformation only feeds their egos and validates their already brainwashed followers. They can say what they want, it WILL NOT change the truth… and the truth is people are born gay….period.
I wonder how Ms. Harvey would feel if a different religion was the majority in the US and felt that women who feel the need to speak publically should be instructed “to discourage this behavior and these false identities. If the truth was being told about this behavior, it would be obvious why it should be discouraged and any teen struggling with these feelings would get the counseling they need”.
Yeah, I thought so.
Relgious dogma have no place in public policy.
Someone should be able to take legal action against the radio station she spews her bigotry from. I am all for freedom of speech but when words actually cause harm to children..words that are not truthful..then someone should be held responsible.
Disgusting. I can’t believe she gets air time here in central Ohio. It’s people like her that pollute Christian parents like mine into the worst brand of homophobia.
I always wondered if Anita Bryant had children
@ Michael Turner, yeah, bryant had several kids who were still fairly young when she started spewing her poison in the late 70s. I remember magazines like Time and Newsweek that ran stories on her often had photos of the hapless children posed with their gorgon mother.
