There was speculation after Chris Kluwe was released by the Minnesota Vikings that his highly outspoken LGBT advocacy might have factored into that decision. Of course, there was some of the same speculation about Tim Tebow and his outspoken fundamentalist views.

LGBT fans needn’t worry, though, as Chris has been picked up by the Oakland Raiders:

It didn’t take long for Chris Kluwe to find work.

Released by the Minnesota Vikings on May 6, the veteran punter signed a one-year minimum contract with the Oakland Raiders, his friend Brendon Ayanbadejo reported for FoxSports.com.

“I’m excited to be an Oakland Raider and be playing in California,” Kluwe, who went to high school in Los Alamitos and attended UCLA, told Ayanbadejo. “Now, my family can actually come to games.”

He intends to continue the activism that rankled some within the Vikings organization. He told Ayanbadejo he hopes to support the push to reveal Proposition 8, which was passed in 2008 and governs that California only recognizes marriages between a man and a woman.

“I’m still going to be myself socially and continue to tweet and interact with my fans,” Kluwe told Ayanbadejo, whose own activism while playing for the Baltimore Ravens helped bring Kluwe into the national debate on marriage equality.

Congratulations to Chris! In a short time, he has become a valued voice in the struggle for equality, so it’s good to know that he’ll still have his platform.
