In an interview with ABC News, George W. Bush wouldn’t take a position on marriage equality, but for the former president who spent a large part of his first term campaigning against and demonizing LGBT people, this is significant. When asked his feelings on the subject, he replied, “It’s very important for people not to be overly critical of someone else until you examine your own heart.” Interesting wording. Former First Lady Laura Bush has stated that she supports marriage equality, but as Joe points out, earlier this year she asked to be taken out of a marriage equality ad put out by major LGBT groups.
Another fun/interesting thing from this interview: Bush defends Obama’s NSA program. Without remotely wading into what I think about that whole issue, it has been interesting to watch wingnuts freak out about it like it’s new, considering the fact that President Bush started the programs that Obama has continued. Regardless of one’s position on the issue, that is a fact.
