The other day, I published a long piece on the American Religious Right’s increasingly sinister involvement in the affairs of Russia, capitalizing on the opportunity presented by a society that’s already as homophobic as they are. As anti-gay hate groups lose influence in the West, it’s one of the only ways they can continue to spread their toxic beliefs. So, I was not surprised to learn today that Paul Cameron, whose “research” has been roundly rejected by every professional mental health organziation, traveled to Russia to lie to the Duma about homosexuality:

Russia’s parliament invited an American anti-gay psychologist whose work has been widely discredited to give expert testimony where he suggested that a third of LGBTs support pedophilia, according to a participant in the meeting.

Family Research Institute founder Paul Cameron, who has been censured by the American Psychological Association and the American Sociological Association for distorting statistics in efforts to block LGBT rights, spoke at a Duma roundtable on “family values,” according to tweets from lawmaker Alexander Sidyakin.

In the past, Paul Cameron has admitted that he has been attracted to men in his life, and has stated that “the long term goal of the homosexual movement is to get every little boy to grab his ankles and every little girl to give it a try.”

The tweets from Sidyakin tell quite a story:

Buzzfeed’s article also drops an interesting detail about the recent Russian meeting attended by Scott Lively and by Brian Brown of NOM. Focus On The Family’s Tom Minnery was also there:

Cameron’s appearance comes on the heels of a meeting of the 2014 planning committee of the World Congress of Families conference scheduled for Moscow. The Oct 15-16 meeting brought together well-known social conservatives from the United States—including Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage, Tom Minnery of Focus on the Family, and Scott Lively—and Russian anti-LGBT activists such as Archpriest Dimitry Smirnov, Vladimir Yakunin of the St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation, and Natalia Yakunina of the Sanctity of Motherhood Program. There were also activists present from several other countries, including Venezuela, Serbia, and France.

One last tweet from Sidyakin, bragging to a journalist that they didn’t feel the need to hear an alternate viewpoint, shows what birds of a feather these Russian lawmakers and the American Religious Right are. They absolutely delight in their own ignorance, viewing it as a virtue:

Amazing.

People will likely die because of their joyful ignorance, and they do not care.
