(Weekly Column)
Today, I feel a little bit like Dr. Sam Loomis. He was the psychiatrist in the classic horror movie Hallow
een who ran through the streets of Haddonfield telling anyone who would listen that Michael Myers had just escaped from the insane asylum. As he frantically warned the residents, they looked at him as if he were a paranoid crank.
Similarly, I warned in May that something was seriously amiss at Mike Bickle’s International House of Prayer (IHOP) in Grandview, MO, an exurb of Kansas City. Part of my job is monitoring extremist organizations, which brought me to the IHOP’s worship center at midnight, a time I expected the cavernous hall to be practically empty. Instead, I found a far more disconcerting scene.
Here is what I wrote on May 4:
There was a gigantic 24/7 prayer room filled mostly with teenagers, many of whom appeared to be of high school or college age. A band played hypnotic Christian music while the audience of 100 or so youth engaged in a diverse set of worship rituals. Some were seated, as if they were in a traditional church setting. Others danced and skipped, like they were in some sort of fundie rave. One youth twirled a purple fan, as if he were at a gay circuit party. About a quarter of the participants walked in a trance-like state through the aisles muttering to themselves — a practice that I had not seen before. Some of these youths walked non-stop for over an hour, with no signs of stopping to rest.
Beware Grandview and Kansas City. You have an aggressive, militant, angry, fundie cult growing under your nose. It’s time to wake up before you become the next Colorado Springs. Don’t be caught flat footed wondering, “How did this happen?” Consider this your first warning.
My warning wasn’t heeded, and residents of Grandview now appear mystified by the murder of a young woman who belonged to a religious sect with close ties to IHOP.
The Kansas City Star reports that a charismatic youth leader, Tyler Deaton (pictured), had persuaded members of a church youth group he started at Southwestern University, in Georgetown, Texas to move with him to Kansas City, so they could be close to the IHOP.
His group allegedly began drugging and sexually assaulting Deaton’s wife, Bethany, 27, for what they deemed spiritual reasons. Deaton, who identified as an “ex-gay” healed through Jesus Christ, also began having sex with male members of his cult.
Afraid
that Bethany was going to reveal the group’s crimes to her therapist, Deaton allegedly ordered one of his followers, Micha Moore, to murder her, and make it appear to be a suicide. The plan seemed to be working until Moore cracked and confessed to authorities.
It would be unfair to portray this episode as representative of what occurs at the IHOP. However, it cannot be denied that this church has become a magnet for extremists with a militant End Times view of the world. From my experience, it is an ideal incubator for young narcissists with Messiah-complexes, like Deaton, who fancy themselves prophets.
In my work with Truth Wins Out, I have seen many bizarre activities on the fringe. Nothing, however, has freaked me out as much as my evening at IHOP. The young people there were nothing short of zombies who looked disconnected from the world. Any ordinary person would walk away from the experience and instinctively know what he or she had witnessed was abnormal, teetering on dangerous.
If this weren’t scary enough, it appears that IHOP is attempting to take over the city of Grandview and turn it into a hotbed of fundamentalism. It appears they are using Glad Heart Realty, which is located in the converted strip mall where the IHOP is based, to help move in followers. In a town of 25,000, it wouldn’t take too many transplants to control the city’s politics.
There may already be allies in government expediting the takeover. Here is what the city wrote about the IHOP coming to town a few years ago:
International House of Prayer leadership intentions are that the new campus ultimately will result in…new activities and excitement for Grandview. Grandview was extremely pleased in the IHOP decision to make the City the movement’s new “home.” Since the decision was made in 2008, the City has seen a rapid influx of IHOP-associated individuals and a “quickening” and positive upswing in hope and optimism for the future.
I’m not sure the rise of a youth sect that led to the murder of Bethany Deaton was the kind of excitement that Grandview had anticipated. With other radical cults now in the area, such as Lou Engle’s The Call and Andy Comisky’s Desert Stream, Grandview residents might want to take a fresh look at IHOP, before everyday seems like Halloween.

Very disturbing.
How tradgic. Looking forward to updates on charges, convictions, etc….
aside from the fact this is just plain creepy, I don’t eat there anyhow. The food is crap.
Maybe its a stretch but if the man was just allowed to be a gay man he could have gone to all the raves he wanted and not gotten some poor girl involved in his homicidal drama. This situation could have played out very differently for everyone.
Word.
What a beautiful young man who could have been so much and done so much if he hadn’t gotten caught up in a cult and then actually not only gone the ex-gay route – but in order to cover up that there really is no such thing, have murdered the woman he married to cover himself. May she rest in light and return to the wheel renewed, and may he find a way forward and at last be healed of the self-hatred and other abuse — if not in this life in the next. Peace to both of them as the Lady wills.
As horrifying as this is, thank you for sharing it.
Krissy:
I think you are correct. Had he simply come out and lived with some honesty and honor, this may not have happened. We have seen time and again the terrible toll homophobia takes on gay people trying to fit in. As well as the harm caused by those dragged into their lie.
this is well done journalism, but scares the heck out of me. it truely sounds like a Lifetime TV movie, but the combination of being “ex gay” and a youth leader makes a lethal combo of cultish mentality with a very vulnerable population And, unfortunately, most things in the name of religion does not break the law scary and dangerous stuff I hope the mainstream media starts writing about it
It’s also possible he’s just a psycho who would have had a male victim if he had lived openly.
Plus one to the comment from rainbow Phoenix. Seems like a lot of speculation here. It isn’t surprising that the sociopath was attracted to a fundamentalist cult like group but we need more facts to understand how ihop played a role in it all. Good initial story though, thanks!
IHOP Forerunner School of Ministry teaching – “We are NOT to think of kissing Jesus on the mouth. This is outside the boundaries of God’s Word. We renounce all interpretations of the “kisses of the Word” that come from sensual imagination.”
As George Lakoff put it, “Don’t think of an elephant!”
IHOP??? I always thought that stood for International House of Pancakes.
There is no such thing as an ex-gay or an ex-straight. Major stupidity. This is a sad story but it doesn’t surprise me. During the AIDS crisis in the 1980′s, as a gay rights political activist, I visited SF from where I was living at the time, Champaign-Urban, IL. In the Castro District (gay neighborhood) during the evening I watched in amazement the God People (Christians) go after gays minding their own business. The God People verbally harassed, tormented, distressed, and troubled innocent people with no regard for the victims’ personal space. It was sickening to watch. I went to the rescue of those who appeared defenseless. When I was winning in argument against the God People I was then interrupted by their supervisors who kept a watchful eye from a distance. They kept an eye on their flock – the blind leading the blind. Being a difficult match for the God People I watched them retreat in anger to go pick on other innocent gay people. God People of this mentality that I dealt with and the ones in the above story are pretty demented individuals. They are dangerous people and know nothing of the universal God but only their egotistic God which ends up being a fragment of an imaginary figure created in their confused expectations of human behavior based on an extremely narrow interpretation of religious dogma spoon fed them by their dictator. God People are not permitted to ask questions of the dictators. They must follow without question and must be submissive and obedient. Does this sound like freedom to you? Anyone remember Jonestown?
I wonder why the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) hasn’t sued these people. This is indeed a case where IHOP could be confused with the pancake joint.
Imagine the confusion!
I believe there is already a lawsuit on the issue.
They settled out of court:

This is one of the Fringe Cults in the Kansas City Metro. We have Westboro Baptist 45 miles away in Topeka, The Mustard Seed in Lawrence which is connected with International House of Prayer. Plus this is the area where Mormons believe Jesus will rule the world from in his second coming. There are many more. I knew a young man I attempted to help who was Gay and had left IHOP and had moved here from an IHOP evangelistic effort in another state. It about destroyed him. The end result of IHOP is they cant make you good enough for them, you will not be good enough for G-d or anyone. FYI When the Vineyard Movement got rid of their “Prophets” Movement after the “Toronto Blessing” Bob Jones and friends ended up connected to IHOP.
IHOP: International House of
PrayerPhruitcakes.Amen Richard!!!!
There are a number of things that have shaped my theology and faith over the years, and one of them is the experience that I had at Kansas City’s “International House of Prayer.” At the time, it was deliberately non-political, and focused specifically on worship and prayer and built around the idea of focusing on the beauty of God, especially as revealed in Revelation.
Another focus was on the heart of David, who was a man after God’s own heart. Like David, the leadership of IHOP was not content to follow God’s commands, and stepped into their own vain ambitions.
As such, IHOP has turned into another pit of religious politics and has become its own brand of cult. Like the story of David, IHOP has degraded into something far beneath its calling. Instead of fixing their eyes on Jesus, they’ve instead focused on political targets — joining in with other extreme right wing pseduo religious political groups to fight their own brand of “culture war.”
The House of Prayer mindset has become not only a pale shadow of what it could have been, it’s now deep into cult territory, with “leaders” Mike Bickle and Lou Engle acting as false prophets in the movement.
We can judge a movement by its fruit. And that fruit is horrific.
This is a very sad and graphic exposition of what can happen when LGBT people hate themselves enough to get involved in a cult such as this. May Bethany rest in peace and if she returns to the wheel of life, may she have a better turn the next time.
When are people going to demand accountability from these “ex-gay” frauds? This time it was one person killed–what it the next time it is more? Places like this need to be shut down.
What a mess.
@Reyn: “What a beautiful young man who could have been so much and done so much if he hadn’t gotten caught up in a cult….”
And by cult, you’re referring to “christianity”, right?
All religions are cults.
Ex-Vineyard xians are connected to this thing’s start? Doesn’t surprise me. The Vineyard near me STILL has people saying gold dust is flying onto them when they pray ala the Toronto gold teeth miracle.
Kansas City isn’t a cult. I don’t agree with them about everything, but they’re not a cult. I do agree that it would’ve been better to just be upfront with this wacko’s association with them, after all, none of us can see into some people. Maybe they don’t feel free to do so since they come under fire so often. I’ve never found them any more offensive than any other evangelical outfit.
