Early this morning, I went to the heavily promoted, “May Day 2010: A Cry To God For A Nation In Distress.” It was organized by Janet Porter (formerly Folger in red jacket) who is best known for running the failed “ex-gay” Truth in Love ad campaign in 1998.
The event was a bust. Less than 300 (not official count, but my own estimate) people turned out in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington today to hear a star-studded line-up of evangelists and right wing political leaders. Organizers claimed from the stage that the event cost $70,000, so they had clearly expected an impressive turnout. The big names included the Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins, Generals International’s Cindy Jacobs (yellow shirt), Porno Pete Labarbera, Bob Knight and Alan Keyes. Here are a few pictures. We will have video later:

HA!!!! Doesn’t look like God was too impressed with this show of hypocrits!!!
Probably overshadowed by the anti-anti-immigration protests going on around the country.
Seriously folks…with unemployment running rampant, jobs needing to be created, people working to afford their homes and such…why is this the only issue that sticks in your crawl? I think most people really don’t care what two men or two women do in the privacy of their own bedroom.
Trevor, yes the immigration protest was huge, but it’s not like people attended one event over the other. People are clearly losing interest, we saw this with Bishop Jackson’s “stand4marriage” rally that drew about 50 to 75 people and the Hate Crimes Bill protest that drew about 20.
One HECK of a way to waste $70,000.
Just think what that $70,000.00 dollars could of been used for? I agree…a BIG waste of money!
Who’s the homo in the pink Polo Ralph Lauren button down in that one picture?
EXCUSE ME WAIT, that is not Polo, that’s American Eagle or something.
Gayer.
Yep, he was probably gay, hoping by waving his hands in the air he’s be three feet closer to God, so He would cure him.
Why is it always the same crazed, angry white people who show up at these things? And did FOX cover it? After all, there was a loon in a tri-corner hat there.
And of course Janet Porter prayed (again) for control of the media which when one thinks about it is so contradictory to Jesus’s message.
White people have so few ways to congregate these days, oppressed as they are.
;-)
I’ve met so many gay people, and to the last man and woman they are decent hardworking people who only want to be treated with dignity and respect, and equally under our laws.
I’ve also met some of the people who think like this group. they primarily consist of those who use God for hatred of minorities – eg the southern evangelical culture that gave us slavery, then the KKK and segregation.
And whose worst nightmare has come true- the election of a black president. And they also have a new group to hate- the gays. These people are victims of the worst of mankinds mental illnesses – hatred of people they don’t know. Remember how Hitler threw the Jews in the Ghetto – it all connects.
And the gay haters are to a large extent people who themselves are secretly gay, or have sexuality and gender issues. Their extremist churches terrorize them with threats of going to hell, gain control of their minds with confession – to use the dirt to work against them. And turn their self hatred outward towards people are gay, in a desperate attempt to do what they think they are doing – save their souls. While they condemn themselves to hell for denigrating and demonizing another part of Gods creation.
Hell can’t come soon enough for the leadership of these groups. It is time for every person who belives in Jesus message of God’s love for ALL his creation – expressed in his only two commandments – love God, and love thy neighbor as thyself, to reject the politics of fear, hatred, and the sick people who lead it.
And if you ever wondered where maniacs like the 9/11 monsters came from, you are seeing the same thing here – Christian extremists. Whose hearts are so filled with hatred that they use God for hatred, rather then love God. Simple as that.
One of the few coherent verses attributed to the supposed Jesus of Nazareth is found in Matthew 10:22, a carrot-and-stick teaching, in which he warns his followers to expect hatred, and mockery, because others will find their teachings to be ridiculous, or worse. That certainly applies to the more fundamentalist, serious believers, who are only urged on to extraordinary acts of fanaticism by the unfortunate promise in second part of that verse, that ‘he who endures to the end will be saved’.
For that reason, when it is said ‘only’ 300 attended, well, I think it is dangerous if a handful have such poisonous beliefs. It only takes one person to committ mass murder in gay-friendly churches in Tennessee; it only takes 19 to bring down the Twin Towers and 2 other jet airliners.
This event would have been a wonderful opportunity to remind these deluded, lost slaves, whose brains have been hijacked by militant faith, that there is no reason to believe in superstitious nonsense. Help them break their mind mannacles with the good news about evolution, reason, evidence and logic. They are also atheist about thousands of gods that ever existed. They only have to go one tiny, unimportant step further.
Let me explain to you why this “sticks in my craw” buddy! Because someone is telling us we can’t marry the people we love. That’s why. You fall in love and then be told you can’t marry her. Screw the economy, the Constitution, God and all the other crap that means anything to anybody! The bottom line is YOU get out of bed in the morning to work for YOUR FAMILY. We deserve the same RIGHTS. Until we get those rights, NOTHING else matters. You are either part of the solution and on the correct side of history, or you’re in the way! That’s why! Because we are being oppressed and offended by others who’s lives are unaffected by ours and whose lives we do not harm. Because we are being attacked. So pack up your “economy” and “immigration” band wagon and sell it to people who already have equal rights!
“Oh God, Hepp us, for we have a black prezdent that wuz born in the foreign kuntry of Hawaii, and homosekshuls git to live here and are gitting “special rights” like hospital visitation, and the peasants that pick our vejtabuls for $10 a day and take care of granny in the nursing home git Obamacare in the ER when they git too sick to go on. Oh God, we know you hate all this. We need divine intervention to stop all this soshalism.”
WTF!!! Can I just add that I find it laughable and offensive that every one of these right wing tea bag fundy rallies nowadays has at least one jackass dressed up like George Washington.
I see that in the third picture, it looks like they’re giving a “Heil Hitler” salute. Not a surprise to me. SAD, SAD, SAD.

The guy in the first picture looks like Rasputin. Don’t hate him because he’s beautiful (and has enough oil in his hair to keep NASCAR running). The chick in the yellow looks like she’s playing Simon Says.

Well at least Jesus (blue T-shirt)was there. What was his position on this whole gay bashing in the USA thing? He must be disappointed with his Christians.
L’eternel hypocrisie! L’homophobe homosexuel destructif.
I am in a band with a m2f tranny. And I am rather icked out by that premise when I take time to think about it. I have few or no gay friends that I know of. Have several gay bosses higher-up.
Even so, I rarely think about gays at all. I would not lift a finger to protest, even though the notion of male gay sex seems too yucky to contemplate.
Lesbian sex doesn’t seem so bad though.
Being a straight guy, atheist myself, I’m befuddled by other straights who are constantly on the warpath against gays. Why are they so taken by the idea of getting others to change or correct their sexual preferences? Isn’t fixing other people a lost cause?
Well, perhaps all the facts should be shared wayne?
The event was simulcast to about 15 different locations. The event was also on two main Christian cable stations and several others.
Rather than take Wayne’s word for it I checked their website and it told me a bit more about it.

Fingers decrease, Apple’s app keep wins by a mile. It’s an enormous choice of all sorts of apps vs a somewhat sad selection of the handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, specially inside realm of online games, but I’m not certain I might need to bet to the long term if this element is vital to you. The iPod can be a a lot superior option in that scenario.
