Weekly Column
This weekend, I attended an event on Fire Island that featured Sen. Kirstin Gillibrand (who was quite lovely and engaging). Interestingly, a few donors publicly expressed displeasure about the Democratic Party’s progress on LGBT issues during a Q&A session. This got me thinking about why some Democrats are disappointed with the Party – and it goes much deeper than votes on a few key issues. The unease, in my view, comes directly from the Party’s inability to define itself, defend itself and the style in which it communicates.
If one is asked to name five defining issues the Republican Party stands for, it would be easy: Lower taxes (for the rich), Pro-business (corporate welfare), Discrimination (gays, blacks, Muslims immigrants, etc.), Family Values (undermining separation of church & State) and a strong defense (dumb wars we can’t afford).
But, if one asks the same question about Democrats, people would be left scratching their heads. Over the past couple of decades, the Party has left us with a series of mind-numbing, ever-changing slogans and strategies.
Sure, many of the Democratic Party’s issues are laudable and they have had some success passing legislation. But the merry-go-round of messages has left the Party with an identity crisis. Any experienced salesperson understands that without a solid brand, the product can’t easily be marketed or sold.
In the absence of a brand, Democrats have had to disproportionately rely on prodigy politicians, such as Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as scaring voters into believing (rightfully) that Republicans are too radical to govern. Fear will send many Democratic voters to the polls in November. However, spooking people into voting against the bad guys and Mama Grizzlies, while important, will not be enough to win long-term.
Aside from defining, the Democrats are going to have to start defending and stop allowing themselves to be tarred by Republicans. First, Al Gore was painted as a wimpy, serial exaggerator who lacked leadership. Then, we had war hero, John Kerry, who was swift boated as a traitor. Now, Barack Obama has been mercilessly slimed as a communist, Muslim terrorist who wants to march into Middle America and take their guns.
It is frustrating that the Democratic Party can’t make Americans remember the disaster of George W. Bush’s presidency, a mere two years ago. Yet the GOP still has people remembering the alleged nightmare of life under Jimmy Carter.
Wouldn’t the party be much better off if it cast aside its reticence and threw political punches against the GOP in the same way that Rachel Maddow, Keith Olberman and Jon Stewart do each night?
If Barack Obama still thinks he can play nice and make friends with intransigent Republicans, then he is kidding himself. The GOP is already planning, if they win back the House, to undermine the President’s legitimacy and effectiveness by launching a series of frivolous investigations.
Of course, the biggest problem the Democrats have is that they often do not know how to talk to voters. In the early stages of my career, when I was in broadcasting, news directors taught that to reach a mass audience, reporters had to write at a fifth-to seventh grade level. The Republicans get this, while Democrats talk to the American people as if they are conducting a college seminar. We hear them yammering about complicated or meaningless terms such as: public option, cap and trade, deregulation, ENDA, and working people.
(Today’s real working people would rather be defined by their aspirations, not their current station in life. So, appeal to their dreams, not their present job.)
Here are four quick examples of the way Democratic Party officials and politicians should start talking to voters about key issues:
Deregulation: “Thanks to Republicans, we can’t even feel secure having eggs for breakfast because they have dismantled safeguards that protected us from food poisoning.”
Alternative Energy: “Every time we go to the gas pump and use foreign oil, we are pumping up the terrorists. This is why we support homegrown energy innovation.”
Environment: “We will not allow Republican policies to ruin our heritage by polluting our blue water and skies with oil and smog.”
ENDA: “In a free market, the best worker should get the job, regardless of sexual orientation. We have zero tolerance for discrimination because it is morally wrong and it is bad for business.”
I know it can be difficult to dumb down the rhetoric. But, it is better than feeling stupid on Election Day, watching Republicans trick the American people into voting against their own interests.

Yeah, clearly the *biggest* problem Democrats have is not packaging their failures and broken promises in prettier language.
*facepalm*
Seriously?
It’s one of their top five problems, Gridlock.
Democrats speak to the American people like they’re at least 50% smarter than Sarah Palin. This is a problem, as a large portion of the population is really that dumb.
If they were packaging it better, there would be less failures and fewer broken promises. If you can’t package the message, how can you succeed?
Good points, especially your final four points.
I wish the Democrats would realize they’re in politics, a pitched battle. At the very least, they need to make the case vigorously for their policies. Instead, they seem to think they have boring office jobs that don’t require debating and arguing.
If they made their case more strongly, they might find voters more willing to put their support on the line.
Exactly, John.
They have a product and it needs to be sold. They should be furiously hawking their product, like its a prize cattle at the auction. If they did so, more people would buy and buy into what they were selling.
Instead, it is people like Glenn Beck who are the great sales people.
And, if we lose and the GOP regains power, LGBT people will be among the ones to suffer the most.
The simplest strategy would be to represent themselves as the party of workers, and point out that American interests are fundamentally the same among races, genders, sexual orientations, citizenship statuses, and [most] classes. But doing so would point out that both parties undermine that truth at every turn.
Unfortunately, that is not the modern Democratic party in the United States.
They haven’t been “the party of the workers” in years. Unfortunately, the “soshulizms!” cries of the Teabaggers notwithstanding, we don’t have a liberal party in this country. We don’t even have a center-left party. We have the Democratic party, which is centrist and corporate AT BEST. Many of the most entrenched members of the party would be considered center right by the standards of any other civilized nation on earth.
So.
Sucks, don’t it?
I don’t think people identify as workers anymore. Due to mass marketing and cheap flat screen TV’s half the people see themselves as future big shots.
So, the Democrats can position themselves as the party that helps people climb the upwardly mobile ladder to help them reach their dreams. While, the GOP should be shown as the party that is blocking the path to dreams, by taking away opportunity.
Ehhhh!! As a person who has been a Democrat since I started voting at 18 and very much involved with the party in my college days the Democratic Party has increasingly moved away from being my party. The problem isn’t marketing. The problem is they use their core with the mantra hey at least we’re better than the Republicans so where are you going to go. And I bought into it for way too many years. Don’t vote for a 3rd party because you’re throwing your vote away and helping the Republicans win. At this point I don’t care. The only way the party is going to change is if they see there are real consequences for throwing your base under the bus. I refuse to be held hostage by the Democratic Party any more. When the party returns to the reasons I joined in the first place they will get my support.
Tim said: “The only way the party is going to change is if they see there are real consequences for throwing your base under the bus.”
Yes, but if they change the way they market the issue, the core issues that the base cares about will be more popular and the base won’t get thrown under the bus. The party ought to have confidence in the issues the base believes in and then go out and sell it. That is what I am talking about.
We have a series of winning issues, yet the party too often acts ashamed of its own professed beliefs.
Hence lies the problem Wayne. I don’t think it’s marketing I frankly don’t think they care that much. Again they just feel that the GLBT community will vote for them out of fear of Republicans getting in. They don’t want to do any heavy lifting because frankly they don’t feel that strong about the issues. They will only start feigning real interest and doing something when they face backlash.
Tim, I think we are saying pretty much the same thing. I am not suggesting they just make cosmetic changes.
I want them to do the heavy lifting and then sell — I mean really sell — why it is right to do the heavy lifting. I’m talking about a real change in substance — and then winning over voters. As long as they remain tepid and act embarrassed by their professed beliefs they will lose. This is what must change.
Bravo! Standing ovation for this one! Great article….BULLSEYE!!
From a distance (I’m from the Netherlands) it seems so weird, that conservative christians, who for example want creationism taught in schools, and who oppose Darwinism, vote for a conservative party that only seems to promote economical Darwinism: survival of the fittest and let the rest rot…
The ascent of Sarah Palin has once again demonstrated a prevalent trait among millions of Americans that got G. W. Bush elected: They only want to elect people who are as ignorant and stupid as they are. As for myself, I want to elect people who are much more knowledgeable and smarter than I am.
One of the hallmarks of the ignorant and stupid seems to be a lack of self-awareness. And thus they think they know everything they need to know.
All true, that’s what’s needed. But Democrat candidates won’t do and say such things, not publicly, not competently, not in their ads, not in their speeches. I have become increasingly convinced that Democrats don’t want to win elections and don’t want to govern from anywhere even an inch to the left of the middle of the road.
Democrats play politics like the Washington Generals play the Harlem Globetrotters — for the show, never for the win.

Well said! I think you hit the nail on the head!
Dumb it down? How much further do you go? You had 18 year olds voting, illegal aliens voting and black panthers intimidating for Obama in 2008. Maybe you need to try a different tactic such as living in the real world not the make-believe place of limitless funds to promote more stupidity and moral decadence. Hello, we need more jobs – and not more government jobs that cost us more than they ever produce. When do we reach the point that even liberals are embarrassed by their elected officials and their antics to dismantle the most successful civilization known to humankind? What a sorry state we are in…you people are truly scary. Al Gore? I mean c’mon.
Tammy, grow up, and get a goddamned job.
Seriously.
Stop being scared of your shadow.
You wuss.
Oh, and Tammy, I know what you’re going to say: You have a job, and you were TOTALLY the employee of the month at the Big Lots or something equally trashy. Or you stay at home and contribute NOTHING to society by spawning hick children while your husband supports your wayward self.
EITHER WAY.
Get an education and THEN come try to talk to the smart people.
Evan, in this tough economy, anyone is LUCKY to have a “trashy” job at ANY place, Big Lots included. We can’t all blog for a living.
Ad hominem attacks on Tammy do not make your argument better. They only make you sound desperate and vindictive. they detract from your argument.
The Democrats are honest, they rarely have broken promises, but they don’t fight solidly – which allows them to be mis-characterized — so nicely demonstrated by Tammy above when she mentions several false myths with the assumption not only that they are facts, but that everyone knows that they are facts.
Thank you Tammy for demonstrating the lie – machine that is the Republican party these days. I grew up on that end of the spectrum and voted Republican for many years — but they aren’t the party of Lincoln anymore.
Do you really think that spewing falsehoods, exaggerations, and self-limiting opinions convinces anyone?
