Truth Wins Out’s Executive Director Wayne Besen comments on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” vote:
“Our political leaders let down the LGBT community, our national security and failed to uphold the basic American values of fairness and equality. It is a poor reflection on the Democrats when they were upstaged by a pop star, Lady Gaga, who showed the spine and commitment they never did. As for the Republicans, this party has become a cesspool of extremism and a backwater of bigotry that has greatly harmed this nation. Today, the Senate — particularly the GOP — played politics with the lives of our brave service members. We are also deeply disappointed in Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who used her power to continue the destructive and discriminatory DADT policy.”

As someone living outside the U.S., it seems to me to look hopeless that American gays will ever assume equality!
There’s simply too much bible thumping in America.
Shame!
Christoph,
That may be the case at this point in time. Fortunately, the vast majority of the opposition is 60 years or older. That leaves 10 to 15 years before opposition fades away.
That gives me a little hope, but not nearly enough patience to wait that long.
What are the chances the President will issue an executive order right after the election?
Harry Reid f*cked us over. He refused to allow the Republicans to offer their own amendments (most if not all of which would have failed) knowing that cloture would be voted down as a result.
He did this for his own political gain…the demise of the “Dream Act” may help to mobilize Hispanics in Nevada, helping his re-election bid. He may have also been seeking to mobilize gays in this election. This is truly bottom-of-the-barrel politics. Shame on both parties.
