(Weekly Column)
In a few hours elections will be held that will likely degrade our quality of life and send the country hurtling on a downward spiral. If polling projections are correct, America will bring the very people who trashed the economy back into power to finish their unfinished business of destroying our way of life. I fear that this election will mark the end of America as a superpower, and a magical land where people dream of coming to find fortune, fame, and freedom.
In 2008, Barack Obama was elected on a platform of hope and change, but his grandiose words were quickly devoured by the thankless task of cleaning up the mess left by George W. Bush. The president’s efforts to put Humpty Dumpty back together were hobbled by his naïve idea that Republicans wanted to fix America’s problems. Each time he scooped dirt to dig us out of ditch, the GOP would take a steam shovel and pour mud into the abyss.
The strategy from Day 1 was to sabotage Obama at the expense of the country. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell summed up his post-midterm election strategy by saying, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”
And what about our country?
The Democrats, as is often the case, were timid and failed to fight back against this onslaught of intransigence. They consistently forgot to define their priorities and frame the issues, thus making it easier for the Republicans to falsely define them as radical socialists who were on a wild spending spree. In a serious miscalculation, Obama, tried to appease his sworn enemies at the expense of his base. The result on Election Day is fired-up Republicans and demoralized Democrats.
But, the larger and more serious question is this: How could American voters be so stupid as to return the culprits of our economic meltdown to power while we are still battling to get out of a recession?
The Republicans have worked to turn America into a Third World nation with huge disparities between rich and poor. They have gutted common-sense regulations, turning Wall Street into a casino and food safety into a crapshoot.
Only a country comprised of voters who are poorly educated, easily distracted, emotionally immature, temperamentally volcanic, economically illiterate, and spiritually superstitious, would go down this road to oblivion.
This election (if the pollsters are correct) is the product of a failed educational system, combined with a entertainment obsessed mass media that rarely asks tough questions, nor follows up with due diligence. Their cowardice and incompetence allowed George W. Bush to lead us into a war with Iraq over nonexistent weapons of mass destruction. And, now we may be led into a government of mass destruction that will turn this one-time nation of dreams into a shell of its former greatness.
Our infrastructure is crumbling as fast as our education system. America is losing its competitive advantage, falling behind on alternative energy, lagging in science and math, and our toxic politics has lead to paralyzing gridlock.
Instead of this election focusing on answers to save the State, it has zeroed in on the emotional state of angry and embittered suckers known as Tea Baggers. These are the gullible fools and religious fanatics who have been tricked into doing the bidding for radical and enormously rich anti-regulatory and anti-tax zealots such as News Corp’s Rupert Murdoch and oilmen David and Charles Koch. The joke is really on the members of the Tea Party, because they think they are working for “The People”, when they are unwittingly shilling for the Royalists. As a result of their wide-eyed buffoonery, we will all suffer the consequences.
The most disheartening part of these elections is the broken system, which is pumping unlimited money into campaigns. Thanks to the Supreme Court’s grotesque Citizens United ruling, candidates are quickly becoming nothing more than spokesmodels for wealthy special interest groups. (This year’s Colorado Senate race alone cost $33 million).
What does this have to do with gay rights?
An uneducated, vulgar, decaying country with a fixed market posing as a free market, with a busted political system and a contracted Middle Class that votes based on mood swings instead of wise policies, will not be a nation that is friendly to LGBT equality. Even if pro-gay laws are eventually passed, the daily lives of LGBT people will suffer as anger erupts from families looking for scapegoats to help explain how they slipped through the cracks. Such rage will produce more hateful and harsh demagogues such as Sharron Angle and Sarah Palin. History has taught us where this leads.
Superpowers are almost always brought down by corruption, cronyism and conflict of interest. However, such problems are complex and difficult to understand. It is always much easier for ambitious politicians to blame minorities, such as the Jews, immigrants or gays.
If the election turns out as projected, there is good reason to worry. I’m not so optimistic America will recover this time. At least the Tea Baggers won’t have bailouts to get angry about. America, thanks to the politicians they helped elect, will be too poor to afford them.

“This year’s Colorado Senate race alone cost $33 million”
Wayne, who cares! That money all goes into the economy.
Bob:
The money goes into the hands of a few well-connected people who produce overpriced ads. It comes from individuals who could otherwise save it or donate to a better cause. Or, it comes from corporations, unions etc. that then own the politician.
Bob, our schools and infrastructure are crumbling. It is a national disgrace that we pay so much for political campaigns. So much money also corrupts politicians.
Have you looked at our current political system lately?
I rest my case.
Wayne, they spend the money or invest it. That provides jobs. People have been claiming our schools have been “crumbling” for decades and under both Republicans and Democrats. I saw new schools and new roads and infrastructure going up all over during the Bush years.
Our system is not perfect but the problems are structural and both parties need reform. You paint a picture so black and white like Republicans are out to destroy this country while Democrats are trying only to save it. Any thinking person knows that’s way too simplistic. Why are Gay Republicans doing the most to end DADT? Because the Democratic Party thinks they own the LGBT vote.
We have a lot of problems. How much people spend on campaigns is the least of them and a structural Democratic majority will do less to solve them and more to perpetuate their power.
[...] an email I just received from Wayne Besen and Truth Wins Out: Elections: Disaster on the Horizon? In a few hours elections will be held that will likely [...]
@Bob: Your Republican talking points wither away in the harsh light of reality. America’s infrastructure is crumbling away faster daily. Our utilities, healthcare and educational system have been privatized and put in the hands of for-profit ventures that answer to shareholders, not citizens (er, “customers”). The resultant cost-cutting has decimated public service in every way except one: The prisons are certainly filled to busting, thanks to the prison-industrial complex.
Our economy no longer produces anything tangible. The main industry in the US is the transfer of money between financial institutions, with a very, very small minority of people actually making money consistently. That money is useless to the public good, and in fact generally ends up in overseas shelters and purchasing goods manufactured overseas. It’s like the old playground game of “Keepaway”, except they’re throwing bags of money between themselves, just over our heads.
The Log Cabin Republicans are engaging in a PR campaign to persuade us to vote against our better interests. And I’m sorry, but as Buddy Cole said: “I may have been born yesterday, but I still went shopping.” And at least you can count on the Democrats to accidentally do something that benefits the LGBTQ community, once in a while.
The Republicans want to make homosexuality illegal. Don’t fool yourself. They want us GONE. In jail or dead, they’re indifferent as to the means, as long as the end is the same. Right wingers are the same the world over, and the sun still comes up in the east.
Bob’s under the delusion that all money spent is equally beneficial to society regardless of what it is spent on. Money spent moving a pile of rocks from one place one day and back to the same place the next day is a waste. Spend enough money on ventures that produce no value and the entire economy collapses. Devoting resources to non-productive adverstising is destructive, not constructive.
Wayne,
I agree with everything you say. I wish I were optimistic, but I am not. Sadly, you are not the only person who has been predicting the end of America as a superpower. Many, such as Noam Chomsky, refer to it as the end of American empire and nation-building, and I think that there is a lot of truth to that. Both the Republicans and Democrats have long fed the military-industrial complex and now have created an intelligence complex that is unwieldy, at best. The time has come for the rise of progressive and moderate third parties that promote justice and equality for all people and which can challenge the established multi-national/corporate election machine. It will have to be a grassroots effort, and it may take years, and even decades for it to succeed, and it may be too little too late. But we cannot just give in to what I fear could await us if we stay silent and uninvolved.
We will need a president who is willing to say no to extreme Republican proposals and Democrats in Congress willing to back him in the interest of protecting our country and economy. Unfortunately, I doubt that the president or congressional Democrats are up to the task.

That was a perfect summation of the hot mess we’re in; and if I were young now, I would seriously consider moving to western Europe or Canada. I was discussing the disastrous election results with a co-worker this morning (11/3) and we both agree that Americans are still like spoiled petulant children who demand instant gratification. Although I *get* the frustration, there is no way in hell Obama or anyone else could have fixed in only 2 years the disaster that bush and the republicans left us. Once again, the electorate has cut off its nose to spite its face — and as Wayne said, the rest of us will end up paying the price along with the fools who voted them in.
Sorry but I don’t buy into the gloom and doom. In fact I think this might be the best thing that happened to the Democratic Party. If they read the tea leaves right they will realize that they need to energize their base. The Republicans only grabbed control of the House so they won’t be able to pass anything that the Democrats don’t want so no off the wall or crazy stuff. As much as many especially on here were running around saying the sky is falling it isn’t. Breathe!!!
Now pro-gay legislation will not pass in the next two years but really even if the Democrats had kept control you didn’t really think they would pass anything did you??
Right Tim, its not like they passed anything up until now such as a hate crimes law.
Again Priya I wish you would address at least one time I have brought it up why it has not been used one time in the year it has passed not once. It’s only a great accomplishment if the administration is actually using it which it isn’t.
And again you have not answered why Obama has not gone to bat for you community other than pretty speeches. Again I ask you how many Senators did he call on the day the Defense Authorization Bill came up. He sure found time to call the WNBA champs but couldn’t be bothered to pick up the phone to try to get that passed. Sorry I have much much higher standards for my leaders than you do.
Tim I know its over your head but here it is again:
The hate crimes law discourages hate crimes. It hasn’t been used because its discouraged hate crimes.
Of course you think last nights election was a good thing – you got what you wanted, anti-gay republicans elected instead of gay-neutral or pro-gay democrats. Take your anti-gay talking points back to gay patriot where you got them from.
Please Priya your personal attacks on me our childish. What are you 12?? I will put my progressive credentials up against yours any time. You seem to worship at the altar of Obama who has proved he is just a moderate corporate loving shill. He is Bush-lite. I want true progressives but obviously you are happy with Democrats like Lincoln, Bayh, and Prior. I prefer my Democrats to be less Republican-lite. I prefer my Democrats to fight for my rights Not undermine them by saying “marriage is between a man and a woman” but what do I know. By your belief because I want leaders who support my right to marry my partner of 23 years I’m a conservative. That is some twisted logic.
Right Tim, your “progressive” credentials and “desire” for leaders who support your right to marry are readily apparent in your efforts to get Republicans elected and your happiness when they do.
Again is reading comprehension a problem for you??? If you had read my posts on the other thread I said if the Democrat in your district is true pro-equality than vote for them. I am very lucky that both my Congressman and Senator who are Democrats have a stellar voting record and I wholeheartedly voted for them. In fact both of my Senators signed the letter asking President Obama not to appeal the DADT decision which your hero wiped his butt with and threw in the trash. My beef is with Democrats who are not full pro-equality. They need to be gone Ike Shelton gone, Blanche Lincoln gone. I don’t shed a bit of tears for losing these people. They weren’t helping they were only hindering. Most of the Blue Dog Democrats who were not for equality gone. Yes the Democrats lost numbers but they were obstacles in the way of our equality. Hopefully next time the Democrats will put up candidates that aren’t working against our interests. It’s that simple. I didn’t vote for one Republican in the election yesterday but for Governor I voted Green, for Comptroller and for one of my three House of Delegates I wrote in a name. My House of Delegate was a Catholic incumbent who refuses to support marriage equality. There is a chance he loses the election is still too close.
Right Tim, I believe you. Every democrat that lost was anti-equality and every republican that won was pro-equality. Given that the vast majority of Democrats have positions that favour gays more than the vast majority of republicans your interpretation of the election results is completely believable.
There’s just one thing Tim, given your interpretation of the election, can you tell me why Timothy Kincaid, a staunch Republican said “The Republicans picked up significant gains in the midterm election, gaining control of the House of Representatives, and bringing the Senate to within a few votes. This is not good news for the prospect of having issues of inequality addressed in the next two years.”?
Again Priya reading comprehension is not a strong point. I did not say that all Democrats who lost were anti-gay. We lost some strong allies which really sucks. Patrick Murphy who has been pressuring Obama on DADT lost. That is a huge loss. Russ Feingold another big blow. Again they deserved our support not because they were Democrats but because they were pro-equality. In fact you are the one saying vote Democrat no matter what their stance. I say vote for true allies if they aren’t I won’t vote for someone who doesn’t support my rights. That’s why I have only voted Republican once and it was because he was on our county council sponsoring a non-discrimination bill while some Dems on the board opposed it. I vote my conscience I don’t vote by fear.
As for inequality addressed let’s see 2 years we kept hearing EDNA will come up for a vote any day. DOMA no one touching with 10 foot pole, UAFA not a peep. Do you honestly think that any of these would have seen the light of day if the Dems kept the House. If you do I have a bridge to sell you. Issues of inequality would not have been addressed no matter who was in charge. And we would get the excuses from people like you that Obama can’t push for it because he needs to get re-elected and can’t be controversial.
Priya writes “Bob’s under the delusion that all money spent is equally beneficial to society regardless of what it is spent on. Money spent moving a pile of rocks from one place one day and back to the same place the next day is a waste. ”
I help make computer chips. My future is critically dependent on the whims of tweens who ceaselessly tweet each other. Talk about rock piles! Most of what we do in this consumer society is a waste if you really think about it. Endless ads to sell uneeded junk. At least political ads are about people getting the power to do things.
“Again Priya I wish you would address at least one time I have brought it up why it has not been used one time in the year it has passed not once. It’s only a great accomplishment if the administration is actually using it which it isn’t.”
Actually, I already answered that, but you completely ignored it, surprise surprise.
Oh, wait! Wait! What’s this?
“The suspect faces simple assault and theft charges, both misdemeanors and punishable up to 30 days in jail and a one thousand dollar fine. North Dakota’s hate crime law does not include sexual orientation or gender identity. However, federal law does, meaning this suspect could face more serious consequences.”
OH s**t, TIM! OH s**t!
Makyui,
The story does not say that federal charges have been issued so if you show me that federal charges have been brought you will have shown me wrong. Hmmmm yet you didn’t FAIL.
And sorry by saying that it’s hard to get a conviction is the reason is really a cop out plain and simple.
Yeah okay, Tim, whatever you say. I love you, too.
I’ll just keep right on supporting anti-DADT repeal, even though it doesn’t help trans people at all. ‘Cause I’m a decent human being like that.
…Er, DADT repeal, I meant to say.
