Sometimes the bogeyman is real and a vast right wing conspiracy truly exists in the shadows. This happens to be the case with the Seven Mountains Movement, an extremist group of evangelical Christians with a radically different vision of America.
This fringe group of zealots wants to turn this country into a Christian version of Iran. Their goal is to purify America and cleanse it of sin – and sinners – so Jesus will be pleased and return. They have identified seven key areas (or mountains) of life they intend to infiltrate and take over: business, government, education, arts, entertainment, family and media. This cabal believes that they must have dominion over these arenas because they are “critical to God’s purposes.”
As part of the plan to penetrate academia, the Seven Mountains Movement is staging an event at Harvard University. The April 1-2 Social Transformation Conference ostensibly aims to employ “faith-based principles to better our society.” The group claims its message is about “changing our society using the time-tested principles of the Judeo-Christian worldview which has profoundly influenced the founding of this country as well as western civilization itself.”
That’s a euphemistic way of saying that the Seven Mountains Movement wants this country to become a theocracy.
Unfortunately, this group is more than just off-the-wall theoreticians. These evangelicals are currently active and in the forefront of antigay organizing worldwide. For example, one of the group’s “prophets”, Julius Oyet, played a key role in introducing and promoting Uganda’s deadly Anti-Homosexuality Bill. Indeed, as researcher Bruce Wilson has discovered, Oyet served on a committee that planned and co-wrote the bill, and even decided who would introduce it in parliament.
Four of the eight listed speakers for the Harvard conference are apostles in this movement. Two of these speakers work directly with Julius Oyet. One, Apostle Os Hillman, has played a role in the financing of Oyet’s virulently homophobic Uganda ministry.
These leaders are different and more threatening than the traditional Religious Right because they have married evangelicalism to a form of reconstructionist theology, which is a demented utopian biblical vision where fundamentalist achieve dominion over the earth.
This plan is described as a world free from poverty, crime, sickness and hunger. The only obstruction to this utopia is a list of literal demons, which must be purged from society – including LGBT people. To initiate this process, the Seven Mountains Movement has held large rallies throughout the world and disseminated media products under the brand name of “Transformations.”
“Expelling demons is a concept viewed so literally that the movement uses a process called ‘spiritual mapping’, in which ‘homosexual sites’ are designated on maps, sometimes marked with yellow pushpins,” said researcher Bruce Wilson. “The Harvard conference is part of that strategy – in that it is an effort to mainstream the movement’s leaders. Harvard does not officially endorse the conference, but the conference is being co-branded with the Harvard name.”
This movement looks very different from garden-variety antigay movements associated with the US religious right. It is multiracial, multi-ethnic and wears a facade of cultural inclusivity. It organizes differently, has different funding mechanisms, and different models for the creation of churches and ministries. It is also anti-gay beyond belief.
“If we’re struggling with a homosexual, same-sex desire, let the bible kill you, rather than make it easier for you, and say well, there must be a better scriptural answer to this,” Lou Engle, one of the movement’s leading lights, bellowed at a St. Louis revival last year. “Brothers and sisters, let the Bible kill you rather than you twist the scriptures! And in that killing, it will break you so that you can find a redeemer and a savior!”
This crazy crowd is the emerging new Christian right. It has operated largely under the radar of media and academia and is currently on the ground organizing political efforts in major US cities.
The Harvard Social Transformation Conference represents a major opportunity to shine a spotlight on this movement, which has for years been advancing through stealth operations. Let’s hope that LGBT advocates in Massachusetts will stand up to these biblical bullies and let people know that their presence at Harvard is poison ivy.

We should organize huge numbers to sign up for the “personal ministry” sessions advertised on the event website, and during those personal sessions, tell the Seven Mountains of Hate jerk-offs to go f**k themselves.
What we need is a Battle (or Battles) of Cable Street here in the U.S. to confront these fascists (and I mean this in the true sense) in the streets.
I strongly recommend brushing up on the principles and practice of Motivational Interviewing. http://www.motivationalinterview.org/ As a therapist and substance abuse counselor I have found this to be my most effective tool for prying people from their destructive habits and opinions. I’m not selling anything here, just recommending a handy tool. If you get folks to enroll in the personal ministry session and conduct several back to back MI session you should be able to pry them from their position.
Margaret Atwood’s novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” is so much closer to becomimg reality than anyone can imagine. if you’ve never read it, you owe it to our country & yourself to do so; even the movie they made of it was chilling…
Groups like this only prove to me that the Christian religion in this country (we seem to be the only country with such a Christian attitude) has become the most perverted, cruel, entity ever. Islam has the name, but Islamic radicals aren’t the only ones playing the game. Talk about home-grown radicalism! AND I have a question: Didn’t Jesus seek out the sinners not to condemn but to teach and help them become better people in their world, but he’ll only come back when all the sinners are gone? YIKES!
[...] for example, the refusal to investigate the Seven Mountains Movement – a genuine analog to Islamist ideological fundamentalism – which is preparing for a literal holy [...]
Blizzard should sue them for plagiarising the World of Warcraft graphics for their presentation -_-
“Margaret Atwood’s novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” is so much closer to becomimg reality than anyone can imagine.”
I just re-read that. People like this would very much like to make Gilead a reality. Susan B. Anthony was right about them.
“Let the bible kill you?” More correctly, its “Let my interpretation of the bible damn you and lead you to where I think you should be……and to make it official, I’ll put God’s name on it to validate it!!” Truly, this group, is worthy of concern, but they are no different than any other bigoted pseudo-”christian” group, in varying degrees. Their stupidity and lack of understanding about the Bible will eventually lead to their demise. And WE will end up becoming stronger…..and justifiably more credible.

Unfortunately the writer has misrepresented people and intentions. So sad to see that such misinformation continually incites anger and perpetuates misunderstandings and even ill will toward people.
Even if it were true is there any civility left among the people of our great institution? I believe there is.
Grace, please specify the people and the exact misrepresentations. Thank you.
Misinformation and incivility occur when, instead of addressing specific facts, people lash out with vague counteraccusations — as you seem to do.
I love it how Grace calls for “civility” to people who are preaching bigotry. And the whole “misrepresenting” charge that she never supports.
Grace–you’re going to have to do better than that.
The 7 Mountain message is a message of love and redemption, not hate. It is possible for God’s love to be experienced and because of that for minds and cultures to be transformed. Ultimately, God has given each person the free will to make eternal decisions. Your eternal destiny will be set by the choice you make regarding Jesus and the price he paid to transform sinners. Do not be moved by the fear of hearing something new. Do not let others predestine your decisions. Come and experience an enlightening that supersedes intellectual reasoning.
Gale S, you obviously are very confused about the difference between love and bigotry. There is no love coming out of this–only pain and suffering. I agree we shouldn’t let others–especially “7 Mountain” predistine our decisions. Come and experience the enlightenment that comes from being truthful to yourself and accepting who you are and not giving in to the Bible based hate of these anti-gay groups.
Daniel, fundamentalist Christian “love” is defined by who doesn’t receive it. It’s a very childish belief system wherein for one to win, others have to lose. Indeed, I see adults playing out that paradigm in other emotional areas all the time, and it’s always a mark of emotional immaturity, but somehow when institutionalized religion does it, it gets a pass.
Gale,
Sorry, but “turn off your brain and obey” just doesn’t work for some of us.
Gale, you obviously belong to one of the non thinking fundy trash denominations. Find a real church, and grow up, or continue wallowing in intellectual and heretical filth with the likes of the deranged Janet (Thank God she is not on my side!) Porter and batshit crazy Engle and others whom even the vast majority of conservative Christians avoid like the plague.
A fundy telling others not to fall for “turn off your brain and obey”….wow, the IRONY
Considering the recent death of Harvard Chaplain and openly gay advocate for LGBT rights, Peter Gomes: this group is an insult to human progress, equal justice and the good name of the Reverend.
“Margaret Atwood’s novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” is so much closer to becomimg reality than anyone can imagine. if you’ve never read it, you owe it to our country & yourself to do so; even the movie they made of it was chilling…”
Buffy, you are so right. Already the Supreme Court is saying women don’t have equal rights. I have thought for years that the “Handmaid’s Tale” is a harbinger of things to come if we don’t stop the fundie onslaught on our rights. And yes, the movie is indeed chilling…even moreso than the book. I have a copy and watch it whenever I find myself becoming discouraged.
Gale, S. I have heard enough fundie trash talked against GLBT people over the years. I prefer not to hear more. In fact, you can take your “love” and take a hike. I’ve heard it all before.
Gale, whose going to MAKE us? How you going to MAKE someone listen to you?
Do we REALLY have a choice? You just think about that for a second.
What are you and your fellow believers going to do when and if, NO ONE or someone doesn’t WANT to hear you?
The historical record shows just how forcefully believers expect deference and the government to accommodate you regardless of the unwilling who want to get on with their lives without so much CONSTANT bombardment from the likes of you.
And what you’re willing to do by way of sacrificing OTHERS, but in no way expect to have to MAKE any.
Some of us KNOW good Christians from bad. Ever think of that?
Some of us realize where the line is, even if you don’t like to think there should be one that concerns you and your fellow believers.
There IS a reason why our country’s government cannot and should not enforce ANY religious belief in this country. And it’s apparent what freedoms to have one, choose it and have fellow believers and many options to congregate, isn’t appreciated.
There are many Christians who still think that there should be no limits to the degree in which they abuse other people with the very protections and freedoms our country GUARANTEES everyone.
The message of Christians, can be heard and seen in many more ways, than a century ago. We’re not deaf Grace, we’re not blind, and it’s not about not caring.
When saturation occurs, there IS a point when TOO MUCH is TOO MUCH, and some Christians don’t have the Grace to SHUT UP and allow for others to have a chance at a say, or for peace from your bombardment.
Jesus isn’t supposed to be a carpet bomb. We’ve ALL been hearing this s**t since our childhoods, and NOTHING is new.
Blah, blah, blah…blah blah, blah blah…
That’s what it sounds like to me now. I’m not deaf…I’m just OVER it.
And you know what?
Some Christians are just going to have to DEAL with that.
So get over YOURSELVES for a change.
Gale said “Come and experience an enlightening that supersedes intellectual reasoning.”.
Yes Gale, that’s the only way you can spread your filth, by having people shut off reason and operate blindly.
Gail, Martin Luther said:
“Faith is a w***e, the greatest enemy that reason has; it never comes to the aid of reality-based things, but more frequently than not struggles against empirical evidence, treating with contempt all that emanates from science.”
Oh, wait! Luther didn’t say that, but he should have. Here is what that deluded man actually said:
“Reason is a w***e, the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but more frequently than not struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God.”
Wow, you know you’re in trouble when your belief system’s survival depends on dismissing the concept of reason.
The anti-homosexual campaign is rooted in the Old Testament.
Jesus Christ brought forth a New Testament.
He taught forgiveness.
He taught, “Do unto others what you would have done unto you.”
He taught, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”
He taught, “It is more difficult for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven than it is for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.”
He changed EVERYTHING — but these Old Testament zealots are trying to twist Jesus into nothing more than an Old Testament prophet. Shame on them!
[...] As Truth Wins Out notes, “Let’s hope that LGBT advocates … will stand up to these biblical bullies and let people know that their presence at Harvard is poison ivy.” Let’s send that message now by clicking here. [...]
Amen, Regan. I’ve been thinking that for years but haven’t been able to put it so succinctly.
It’s like they think some magic number of repetitions will somehow make me “see” the “light.”
Ugh.
This Muthee character sounds familiar. I think the Southern Poverty Law Center has him on their radar, and you have to be pretty nasty to make their s**t list.
I’m a Christian, and I can tell you that you don’t have to shut off your brain to believe in Jesus’ message. I continue to be appalled by those who think otherwise… how about showing the LOVE and COMPASSION and ACCEPTANCE of societal outcasts that Jesus showed??
Correction to my earlier post: the SPLC does not (yet, anyway!) mention Muthee on their hate list, but I know I’ve heard about him, and it may have been a passing reference in some of their material… I’ll have to keep looking. He may not be formally named to their list, but it doesn’t mean he’s not on their radar in one way or another.
