New ‘Ex-Gay’ Survivor Group Starting in Fort Lauderdale

Rev. Jerry Stephenson, a Truth Wins Out board member, has a new venture that we are excited to report on:

I am starting an Ex-Ex-Gay Group called GOD’S WORTHY CREATION with Atlantic Insttute Spiritual Counseling Center to help gays and lesbians know that they are wonderfully made as they are in God’s wonderful creation. Aside from being a good friend for 16-years and a wonderful activist, Jerry is an author of several books including, “Out of the Closet and into the Light” and “Overcoming Obstacles in Life and Coming Out On Top”. He also appeared in this Truth Wins Out survivor video:

Wayne Besen is the Founding Executive Director of Truth Wins Out and author of “Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth” (Haworth, 2003). In 2010, Besen was awarded the “Visionary Award” at the Out Music Awards for organizing the American Prayer Hour, an event which shined a spotlight on the role American evangelicals played in the introduction of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill.

Broward County Florida’s ex-gay group is called Worth Creations (http://www.worthycreations.org/). This ought to make for some interesting “who’s on first” discussions.

I’m glad to read this news. I’ve had the privilege of spending some time with Rev. Stephenson on two occasions and I’m happy that there will be more resources for survivors. It’s needed. Would love to also see some groups pop up for non-religious ex-gay survivors as well, since probably at least half of survivors are now non-religious.

At http://www.BeyondExGay.com our community serves both populations, and we have an online group, but there is something special about being able to spend time together in person. Best of luck, Rev. Jerry!
