I mentioned a few minutes ago that Tom Minnery of Focus on the Family admitted in the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on DOMA this morning that kids of same-sex couples are put at a disadvantage by laws that discriminate against their parents. This exchange led by Sen. Al Franken is must-see teevee, as Al calmly produces one of the studies that Focus has cited to support their belief that same-sex parents are inferior, explains that it doesn’t remotely say what Focus claims it says, and ends by asserting that based on such misrepresentations, Minnery’s entire testimony is suspect. This is what happens when the Religious Right goes under the microscrope, y’all!
Beautiful!

Ben, I have no affiliation with any group on any side. I am a (nonreligious) individual just trying to keep the facts in play.
Family, like marriage, has a settled definition going back centuries not open to popular vote to redefine. = Father+Mother+Child(ren)=Family. Friendships can be loving and feel like family but they are NOT family. Call it what you will but you will not redefine what it means. NEVER!
Homosexual lovers can have equality in standing with married people as far as I am concerned (with the exception of adoption) but they can never be called married. You strive for the use of the term only to destroy its meaning and assuage your feelings of inferiority and guilt. But you are free to choose and return to heterosexual normalcy. Here is hoping you do.
Al
So, married couples who don’t have children by choice or for physical reasons aren’t really a family? Thanks for slapping so many families/people in the face.
“But you are free to choose and return to heterosexual normalcy.” So, Al, when did you choose to be heterosexual? And if you did choose it, you must have had some “same-sex attractions” as well, otherwise there was no choice to make. What’s that, you say didn’t choose it? If you didn’t choose to be heterosexual, then how can homosexuals choose to be heterosexual? If homosexuality is a choice, then heterosexuality must be as well.
Al, actually, for most of history family could be father, all his wives and concubines, their children=Family. Unless, because the wives and children were the property of the father he decided to cast them aside or even kill them.
Al, what happened? Did you get stuck in a timewarp in the 1950s? Becuase the kind of hard and fast definition of “family” that you claim is a pretty recent development. But that’s what happens when you’re educated at Oral Roberts University.
Al, you don’t own the word family and its definition is open to popular vote – usage determines meaning and same sex couples and half the population vote that family includes them so you’re S.O.L.
