The Moonie Times reports that a couple of wingnut groups have decided to double down on the desperate, filing suit against New York’s new marriage equality law:
The day after New York became the sixth U.S. state to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, two traditional-values groups filed a lawsuit to overturn the law, saying that politicians used a “corrupt legislative process” to enact it.
New York State Open Meetings laws were violated, said New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms and Torah Jews for Decency in their lawsuit. There were also irregularities in the Senate voting procedures, and “unprecedented Senate lockouts” in which lobbyists and the public were denied access to lawmakers.
“New York law requires that the government be open and transparent to keep political officials responsible,” said Mathew D. Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, which is representing the groups.
“The back-room tactics were rampant in the passages of this law,” he said. “The law should be set aside and the process should begin again to allow the people a voice in the process.”
It’s never simply that they lost fair and square, and it doesn’t matter which branch of government inches LGBT people closer to full equality; there was always a “corrupt process” or a “rogue legislature” or “activisssssss judges.” They simply can’t sleep at night without feeling like they’ve hurt gay people that day.
Says more about their demons than it says about us, I think.
Pathetic.

Religious gay bashers *were* included in the negotiations related to the bill. That’s why the law includes so-called religious protections for gay bashers. Significantly, the Plaintiffs’ complaint document contains language such that the Plaintiffs certainly sought but were denied a temporary restraining order, which if granted would have stopped the marriage equality law from going into effect. The Plaintiffs of course don’t want anybody to know that they asked for the temporary restraining order but were denied. That’s because, the denial means that a judge already determined that the case is most likely of no merit. The Plaintiffs in a first instance have no standing to bring this lawsuit, because they have not in any way been harmed by the law. The announcement of the suit (with a purposeful non-announcement of the denial of the request for a temporary restraining order) probably will bring some money into the Plaintiffs’ pockets – and those who send them donations are suckers. Governor Cuomo said of the lawsuit that the Plaintiffs don’t even have basic knowledge of the law in New York. He was correct.
The goal of the anti-gay lobby is to silence pro-equality Americans and lock us out of the public square. They don’t want any of the 3 branches of Government to support us and they will do whatever it takes, including incitement of violence as in their hate rallies across NY yesterday, to shut us out.
I heard on Michaelangelo Signorile’s show that a reprehensible, shamless high ranking rabbi in NY blamed the murder of the orthodox boy Leiby Kletzky by some psychopath, on the fact that NY passed marriage equality. It was jaw dropping that anyone could sink so low, and *exploit* the murder of a child to try and score political points. These ultra religious conservatives have no decency, absolutely none! Even if that were true, why the hell would any one want to worship a bestial god like that?!
What pisses me off most is that all throughout the push for equal rights, it is US, the Gay Community, that have had to remain holier-than-thou, whiter-than-white, perfect citizens in order to progress, whereas it is perfectly acceptable, nay encouraged, that so-called ‘christians’ routinely LIE, incite blind HATRED, and encourage VIOLENCE against LGBT.
Imagine the uproar if at Gay Pride rallies there were speakers who encouraged hatred and violence toward fundie wingnuts, if there were gangs of gays beating up christians.
And they have the audacity to call themselves victims.
I say, “Go for it!” The more hateful and bigoted you show yourselves to be, the more tiresome you become to everyone else. The court is not going to grant you any sort of “relief”. I really like the way they always play the “let the people vote” card. The Constitution says in essence that a majority of voters cannot vote away the equality of any minority. Basic civil rights are not to be subject to a vote. They are just guaranteed to EVERYONE. And yes, someday, this issue will come before the US Supreme Court on the constitutional basis of civil rights and equal rights and all those state constitutional amendments against equal marriage rights will fall in one fell swoop.
There’s no way anything will come of this suit. I wouldn’t mind betting Maggie Srivastava (Gallagher) and her NOMZIES are funding it as they did Ruben Diaz’ rally last June. He’s a member of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedom and probably one of the culprits in this suit.
They’re hoping to find an activist judge to thwart the will of the people.
In fact, the people have always voted for male/female marriage and it is only the legislature and courts that have created same sex marriage.
Tony, I don’t know of any legislator, any court judge, or any citizen who has voted against male/female marriage, do you?
Getting back to NOM. It was recently ordered to disclose its source of donors by a court, I believe it was either Minnesota or Maine, not sure. According to section 501(c) 4 of the IRS code, nonprofits are required by law to disclose their sources of income of $1000 or more by individuals and $5000 or more by corporations. As far as I know, NOM has not complied with the court order. Why aren’t we hearing about it and why has there been no prosecution for failure to comply I wonder? We should do the same in NYS. NOM is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in our state to overturn marriage equality, in fact it said it would donate more than $1.5 million to make it happen. Why aren’t we bringing Gallagher and her NOMZIES to court over that? Force them to disclose their donors or shut them down in our state.
tony, Richard is right.
And the whining is changing witht he situation;
“THIS IS ONLY BEING DONE BY THE COURTS AGAINST THE WILL OF THE LEGISLATURE AND THE PEOPLE”
became; (quieter) “This Is Being Done By The Courts And The Legislature Against The Will Of The People…Who, Elected The Legislature…And, Uh, The State of New Mexico, Which Voted Down An Anti Gay Marriage Amendment, So We Had To Put Up Another One That Did Not Ban Civil Unions…”
and will, as every realistic poll (not a push poll paid for by NOW or some such group designed purely to make their side still think they could win…Gotta’ keep those checks coming in!!!) now shows, will soon be
“well…we…uh, well, we will come back and overturn this….yeah, thats right…never mind that they last few votes were FAR closer than the ones before them, or changing demographics, or that we lost this vote….the people voted the wrong way, and now my rights to be a bigot are not absolute…the courts started it, and then the legislatures, and now the…people.”
Time. It it will take is time, and NOM and its romanish fanatics will be left with no one to blame…just a mirror to look in, and an ugly history looking back at them.
Here’s what I said: “In fact, the people have always voted for male/female marriage and it is only the legislature and courts that have created same sex marriage.”
