History and Momentum are on Our Side, Says TWO
Burlington, VT – Truth Wins Out celebrated a United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit decision today that reaffirmed a lower court ruling that said treating gay married couples as second-class citizens is unconstitutional. This decision follows President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s support of marriage equality, giving a tremendous amount of momentum to this critical issue.
“This victory is another huge boost and shows that history and momentum are on our side,” said Truth Wins Out’s Executive Director Wayne Besen. “While there is a long slog ahead, it is clear that we are moving ever closer to a day when all married couples are treated equally. We applaud Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders for taking up this fight and emerging with a impressive win.”
The decision sets the stage for a ruling next year by the Supreme Court on the constitutionality of the law (DOMA) that limits federal recognition of marriage to the union of a man and a woman, according to the Los Angeles Times.
