FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dance Band Spank the Hippo to Donate Profits From Song Sales to Truth Wins Out

Spank the HippoBURLINGTON, Vt. – The alternative dance band Spank the Hippo announced today that its musical hit Porno Pete is now available on iTunes. From now until New Year’s Eve, it will donate 100% of its music profits to Truth Wins Out.

Porno Pete is a catchy anthem poking fun at America’s most notorious anti-gay activist, Peter LaBarbera, who is the founder of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality.  More than 30,000 people have already viewed the Porno Pete music video on Youtube. The tune is on the album Mugged By My Own Shadow. People are encouraged to download the entire album, which includes the dance sensation Drive to Montreal.

“With a tough economy, we thought that this would be an ideal way to assist the amazing work of Truth Wins Out,” said Scarecrow, the band’s guitarist. “Songs can be downloaded from iTunes for only $1 and our entire album is only $9.90. So please make a purchase today to help Truth Wins Out do their amazing work fighting against religious extremism and the ‘ex-gay’ lie.”

Peter LaBarbera (Porno Pete) is infamous for secretly slithering into gay bars, leather parties, and bathhouses to surreptitiously take naughty pictures of unsuspecting patrons. He disingenuously claims that he doing this as “research” to “expose the homosexual agenda.” In reality, his work is an ongoing smear campaign designed to harm the LGBT community.

“I can’t think of anything sweeter than the homophobic hijinx of Peter LaBarbera helping to fund our work fighting extremists just like him,” said Truth Wins Out Founder Wayne Besen. “We are grateful to Spank the Hippo for their generosity and for letting people know the truth about LaBarbera in a danceable and humorous way.”

Spank the Hippo is the inventor and pioneer of the Jolt House music genre. Their cutting-edge sound is an original alchemy of techno, dance, and alternative. The music explodes with the high energy of techno, it keeps the dance floors packed with irresistible musical and lyrical hooks, but also has the gritty alternative feel of New York’s thriving back alley, garage music underground. The band began in 2010 in Edinburgh, Scotland and moved to the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. Spank the Hippo’s songwriter, keyboardist and front man is Critter. On guitar and back-up vocals is Scarecrow.

Truth Wins Out (TWO) is a nonprofit organization that fights anti-LGBT religious extremism, monitors anti-LGBT organizations, documents their lies and exposes their leaders. TWO specializes in turning information into action by organizing, advocating and fighting for LGBT equality.

  3. Great idea. Thank you, Spank the Hippo! Why doesn’t shrill anti-gay activist Porno Pete slither and creep into heterosexual swinger’s parties or heterosexuals having sex in cars or on beaches or heterosexuals drinking and having sex at Mardi Gras or on a Friday or Saturday night at any of the thousands of heterosexual bars across our nation? Why does he try to hide the fact that practicing heterosexuals are doing all the same things as gay people?

  5. @emma,
I try as hard as I can not to think about Petey’s naughty dreams… It’s a little too disturbing… (I also have the nagging suspicion that Wayne is in them what with Pete’s crush and all.)

  6. Wayne, you are a hater and hypocrite of the highest order, though you do a good con-job on TV playing a respectable, decent gay activist. (I still remember the days debating you back in DC before you left HRC — how you would obnoxiously talk over your opponents whenever they brought up inconvenient truths like the disproportionate rates of sexual disease for Men Who Have Sex with Men.)

It’s too bad now, as one who should be a mature man, that you have to resort to such crude demonizations, sophomoric slanders and character assassination to advance your dubious cause. What a waste of writing talent, but Saul Alinsky would be proud.

The jig is up: despite the Gay Left’s campaign to smear Christian, pro-family opponents as “haters,” more and more everyday people are recognizing that the nastiest, cruelest and most intolerant activists in America are homosexual militants like you, Dan Savage, Evan Hurst and the comically-named “Truth” Wins Out. All of you would be exposed as phonies if the “mainstream” media were anything close to impartial.

As for me, I wear Truth Wins Out’s hatred and very “queer” putdowns like this as a Badge of Honor.

  7. Labarbera said “The jig is up: despite the Gay Left’s campaign to smear Christian, pro-family opponents as “haters,” more and more everyday people are recognizing that the nastiest, cruelest and most intolerant activists in America are homosexual militants”.

Your side seeks to prevent gay marriages, destroy their relationships, fire them from their jobs, evict them from their homes, take their children away from them, criminalize and even execute gays.

And somehow in your twisted mind when gays call such people names they’re supposed to be the nasty, cruel and intolerant ones. The jig is up alright Peter – no one is going to buy your incredible b******t.

  8. Lighten up Porno Pete. You’ve been imortalized in song!! How many people can say they are on iTunes?! No one has written a ditty about me. :(

So go out and buy yourself a copy. And enjoy!

  9. Oh Petey! ‘More and more everyday people are recognizing’ that lgbt people are kind, decent, NORMAL, productive, tax paying, trustworthy, individuals who are just as capable of having long term monogamous relationships (not 72 hour marriages like some people on ‘your’ side); and that we are entitled to the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities as everyone else. We are being accepted more and more everyday, especially by the younger generations and that’s what’s eating you alive. The jig IS up, and you and yours have lost big time. And stop calling yourself a ‘pro-family Christian’, because you are absolutely NEITHER.

  10. The jig is up? America hates homosexual activists? Then why are more and more Americans supporting gay marriage? Is it because of the media, or because more Americans realize there is no reason to hate homosexuality?

  14. Oh, Peter, so obsessed with Teh Gheyz, so incredibly fixated on Teh Buutsecks, so secretly turned on by all the leather bars you’ve sneaked into.

You can project your fantasies all you want, but the facts remain: You and your fundamentalist “Christian” ilk are dying out like dodo birds and the popularity of anything named “Kardashian”. And it’s not just LGBTQ folk that hate you. EVERYONE hates the fundies now. Because everyone sees you for what you are: Pathetic, repulsive scum that live in utter terror of anything outside your immediate control, and anyone that sees the Bible as the nauseating pack of lies and fiction that it is.

Organized religion has been the motivating force for about 99.99994% of all the ills of human society since we first emerged as a species millions (YES! I said “millions”, Pete!) of years ago. Organized religion, and the psychotic idiots that use it as a bludgeon against their fellow human beings, are corrosive and destructive forces in the world that are being slowly but surely vanquished in civilized societies.

Pete, if you hate the idea that LGBTQ people can walk free in the US, without fear of being killed by fundies, why don’t you move to Uganda?! That place should be Paradise for you.

  18. Being called “Porno Pete” bugs him, anyone holding a different viewpoint really bugs him (see the post prior to the one addressing TWO on his website), his own tactics bug him when the tables are turned and used on him, yada, yada yada. I’m sure ice cream bugs him, candy bugs him, kittens and puppies bug him, laughing babies bug him, and flowers in springtime probably bug him too.

But what really seems to bug him is that the “effeminate” gay men he so despises, belittles, and denigrates, have made him look like the complete a*s and total bully that he is.

He reminds me of the kid on the playground when I was in second grade. This kid was shaking down the littler kids for their lunch money. When one of them kicked him in the nuts, he ran to the principal, crying and screaming like a little girl having a tantrum. The principal (wise to his game), confiscated the stolen lunch money (he’d been watching the scam), returned it to those reporting the incident, and suspended him for a month.

His parents beat his a*s when he got home – we all laughed.

Please tell me what LaBarbera is suggesting about Saul Alinsky. I’ve always liked Alinsky who helped marginalized communities organize against powerful real-estate interests and other forces, so it probably isn’t anything positive.

    Comment by Bob Schwartz — November 3, 2011 @ 10:26 pm

  23. Pete,

I think there is some lexical confusion between hate and ridicule.

Ridicule = “Peter LaBarbera (Porno Pete) is infamous for secretly slithering into gay bars, leather parties, and bathhouses to surreptitiously take naughty pictures of unsuspecting patrons.”

HATE = Levi Sever, a 15-year-old student at Union-Scioto High School in Chillicothe, Ohio was charged with one count of assault this morning for brutally beating a gay student, now identified as Zachary Huston.
See the vicious beating actually taking place here:
    http://youtu.be/gPyyqISm8eg

HATE = Burke Burnett has spoken out to KDAF-TV about the attack last weekend in which he was stabbed, beaten, and thrown onto a fire.
See Burke talking about his injuries here:
    http://www.the33tv.com/videobeta/f82001d5-d4a3-4100-b2b8-a1370729e80c/News/11-2-11-Gay-Man-Attacked

HATE = Kristen Cooper, a student at the University of Texas San Antonio says she was beaten by two men who grabbed her and dragged her into their truck while she was waiting for a ride outside a Halloween party. The men, she said, began punching her, KENS5 reports.

“It was bad, it hurt really bad, it was like full fist and I tried to fight them off, but I couldn’t,” said Cooper.

Cooper said the only thing the men knew about her was that she was gay and during the beating she claims they were calling her anti-homosexual slurs.

    See her injuries here:
    http://www.kens5.com/news/UTSA-student-says-shes-victim-of-a-hate-crime-133123553.html

What you call hate is a paint scratch on a car compared to the mile deep chasm that is homophobia.

Impartial media – be careful what you wish for. You’d go viral and not in a good way.

    Have a nice day!

2 Corinthians 5:15, 17 And he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

  29. What you radical gay activists don’t take heed of is, the same moral conscience that makes people naturally averted to homosexuality is the same twinges of conscience that keep our murderous desires in check, or all the other desires where we would otherwise violate another human being.
The conscience that god put in us is what keeps us in check.
Without it, the man you have a fender bender on the street would step out and gun you down.
And your neighbor would find himself breaking in your house numerous times without that moral safety valve.
Still want Godliness wiped off the slate of human consciousness. I seriously doutbt it.

    Comment by Map — November 6, 2011 @ 5:40 am

  30. Cute storyline Map. But crime rates – particularly violent crime – in ultra religious America are significantly higher than in less religious countries in Europe and Canada.

Guess you need a new theory. When I walk on the street in “Godless” nations I feel much safer…

    Comment by Wayne Besen — November 6, 2011 @ 9:24 am

  31. “…the same moral conscience that makes people naturally averted to homosexuality is the same twinges of conscience that keep our murderous desires in check, or all the other desires where we would otherwise violate another human being.”

Ah, so in one stroke ‘Map’ not only conflates homosexual ‘behavior’ with murder, but also claims that if you don’t have a ‘moral’ issue with Gays and Lesbians, then you won’t have a ‘moral’ issue with murder.

    That’s classy. Really. /eyeroll

    Comment by Ozymandias71 — November 6, 2011 @ 9:51 am

  32. Why is it that champions for God, such as Map here, are habitual liars (and such terrible ones at that)? Look, nobody’s forcing you to be gay/lesbian/bisexual, but there is nothing at all moral, or even human, about societal, legal, and physical persecution of anyone. “I think they’re icky” is not an excuse, no matter how you try to dress it up as morals or values (which, I reiterate, your camp has demonstrated that you all have neither).

The best part of this is that you’re encouraging people to wipe your god off the slate of human consciousness by how you all behave. Do you honestly believe that people want to be in league with a group so blinded by hate and lust for control over humanity that they’re willing to say and do anything (no matter how heinous) to anyone in order to satisfy such things ? I know that you’re probably going to respond to this by falsely accusing me of persecuting you or some such rot, but this is the reality of what you’re doing.

    Comment by Hal — November 6, 2011 @ 10:17 am

  33. @Hal:

The Ten Commandments contains the following:

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Yet these anti-Gay activists gleefully go out of their way to do just that – they villify their Gay and Lesbian neighbors; they lie, they distort, they use misinformation in every way possible to assert their goals of marginalizing LGBT Americans, in flagrant disregard of what the Ten Commandments have to say about that sort of behavior.

    Comment by Ozymandias71 — November 6, 2011 @ 10:33 am

  34. This is the Truth for everyone:
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
This is the Truth. This is what God says. It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convict a heart. It is Jesus’ job to change a life. You can accept it or deny it. We will all meet the One True God when it is all over. If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior you have eternal life. If you have not your destiny is hell. Pretty simple. Very complete. We have all fallen short of the Glory of God. We have all sinned. There is none righteous, no not one. We all come to God the same way. If you accept Jesus as your Savior will He change your life? YES!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5Akz6J8Rw0

But what has all this to do with the matter in hand? Oh yes, of course, v. 20: “For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.” Yes, that it is certainly relevant to the deeds of the anti-gay/ex-gay brigade.

    Comment by William — November 11, 2011 @ 12:46 pm

  36. Peggy. Sorry babe “This is the truth” doesn’t cut the mustard, just because you say so, your church says so or your holy book says so. If you are going to go around quoting a 2000 -2500 year old book of antiquities to people today, you’ve got to have corroborating, authenticating evidence that it is what you claim it is. You are using quotes from it like magic incantations assuming that by speaking the words their inherent power will overwhelm us with “truth” so we will come to believe in talking snakes, magical fruit trees, virgin births and divinely ordained male dominance like you do. Now if you can show us some materially verifiable evidence that your holy book and its writings are true that would be a whole other ball game.
So Peggy, why not provide us with evidence that your bible is true? No anecdotes of how it has changed your life, no quotes from your bible claiming it is the truth, but some real, verifiable evidence that your holy book was authored by a god. When you do, I am sure you will have a much more receptive audience here at TWO.

  43. Bob: spell a big word correctly. Any word. One that isn’t in your fundie version of the Bible.

Meanwhile, your whining and bitching about gays victimizing fundamentalist morons is hilarious, as I have to report every week on some gay kid who’s killed him/herself in response to bullying of the sort that comes from your fundamentalist leaders. Where do kids get the idea that it’s okay to bully gay kids? From the top of your backwards, mal-educated wingnut organizations.

    Comment by Wayne Besen — November 29, 2011 @ 10:48 pm

  46. Yes, it does, Bob.

Teaching that gay people are sick and/or going to hell, or are sinful and need to repent for who we are IS bullying. It’s actually the worst kind, because it comes from people that kids are taught (wrongly and for no reason) to respect.

    Comment by Evan Hurst — November 30, 2011 @ 12:16 am

  47. You have to understand how people like Bob and Pete were trained to have their opinions. They were brought up in a respect=fear environment. They were brought up to not question authority, because if you thought for yourself and questioned, you were put (at a young (starting around 2 or 3) age that thinking and questioning would take the safety of home away, because the people you depend on for safety would either scare you (yelling and screaming) or beat you until you were terrified for your life. As they get older, that power to speak without being questioned is passed from parent to religious leaders who instill a fear of hell – remember that these kids are conditioned to accept what they are told at the fear of death: this teaching fits right in with their world view. Parents and religious leaders then turn their authority without question over to conservative political speakers like Rush and Beck, who spin for people like Bush.

Here is their mindset: To question is to die. Anyone trying to convince you against what you were told is trying to get you killed. Strike out at that dangerous person to protect yourself.

This is how the religious right can be as cruel, hateful and downright evil, when they claim to follow Jesus, a teacher of open loving acceptance of others, regardless of their differences.

You will never convince them of anything, because to even listen to you, they have to be willing to die first.

    Comment by BearDrummer — November 30, 2011 @ 4:06 am

  48. I’m quite able to think for myself Bear thank you very much. I have no fear of Hell (which by the way is a very real place), as Christ through his death on the cross has provided a way to avoid eternal damnation there.

God is a very kind being and not at all the hate monger that you try to portray Him as. He IS however a very holy and righteous God, and as such any sin cannot be in His presence. Because of the free will that He gave us was abused, and sin nature entered mankind’s DNA, we are all doomed to an eternity apart from Him because of our own actions and not His sending us to Hell.

Unless you repent and accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, then indeed a fiery existence in the afterlife awaits you. If you can’t handle these truths, then I sure hope that I do end up being wrong, but have seen too much evidence to convince me otherwise.

I’ve now made things thoroughly clear, and you can mock and ridicule me through your bigotry by calling me a bigot, homophobe (which by the way isn’t a real word, and I don’t fear homosexuals in the least and have many friends who are homosexual that I pray for daily), or any other hateful words you can concoct. Unfortunately, the truth will still remain and you most likely won’t realize that until it’s too late.

I pray for each of you that you will see the error of your ways and stop the hate. With that I will kindly bow out of this discussion as I don’t believe anything will budge me from the truth on which I stand, especially obscenities screamed at me while you jump down my throat (I still don’t understand how you expect to gain the respect of others through such actions).

Alas, I bid you all farewell.

    Comment by Bob — November 30, 2011 @ 2:42 pm

  49. Quickly, because I have to wash my cat:

“I’m quite able to think for myself Bear thank you very much. I have no fear of Hell (which by the way is a very real place), as Christ through his death on the cross has provided a way to avoid eternal damnation there.”

Prove that hell is real, in a grown-up way, and show your work. Also, because I used to be an Evangelical let me also say that your claim that you have “no fear of hell” is probably quite untrue, but that’s a personal issue that Evangelicals & Fundamentalists don’t admit to even each other, much less the outside world. The entire worldview — and therefore the obsessive focus on purity and trying to control other people’s lives — is 100%, completely based on fear.

“God is a very kind being and not at all the hate monger that you try to portray Him as. He IS however a very holy and righteous God, and as such any sin cannot be in His presence. Because of the free will that He gave us was abused, and sin nature entered mankind’s DNA, we are all doomed to an eternity apart from Him because of our own actions and not His sending us to Hell.”

So kind that he created billions of people and only made his plan of salvation available through a flawed book written down by nomads thousands of years ago, which most people will never read. The rest, including the many, many people who came before that book was written down, will be condemned to a fiery hell because God says so. Sounds kind and loving to me!

Your contention that “sin nature entered man’s DNA” is something that you also cannot prove, but is a story you’ve been told since you were a child. It’s easier to understand than actual DNA, I suppose.

“Unless you repent and accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, then indeed a fiery existence in the afterlife awaits you. If you can’t handle these truths, then I sure hope that I do end up being wrong, but have seen too much evidence to convince me otherwise.”

You have not seen evidence of s**t.

“I’ve now made things thoroughly clear, and you can mock and ridicule me through your bigotry by calling me a bigot, homophobe (which by the way isn’t a real word, and I don’t fear homosexuals in the least and have many friends who are homosexual that I pray for daily), or any other hateful words you can concoct. Unfortunately, the truth will still remain and you most likely won’t realize that until it’s too late.”

Paraphrase: when I’m in heaven, you’ll be sorry. It’s funny, because this belief probably helps you compensate for your own intellectual/life inadequacies, much the way big tires on trucks help rednecks compensate for THEIR inadequacies.

“I pray for each of you that you will see the error of your ways and stop the hate.”

I wish you’d stop propagating a worldview that leads to dead kids and destroyed families. That’s what I wish.

“I don’t believe anything will budge me from the truth on which I stand.”

Because you are intellectually incurious and not prone to critical thinking.

“(I still don’t understand how you expect to gain the respect of others through such actions).”

Your type doesn’t really respect other people, and I don’t see any sign of you growing up and understanding that we live in a secular society where we’re all entitled to certain rights, and instead will continue to try to use your weird cultish beliefs to deny others their freedom and equality. I guess we’ll have to live without your joke version of “respect.”

  50. Oh, also, your gay friends aren’t your real friends. You are not a friend to them, and they likely tolerate you as the bigot you are, if they even exist.

It’s so funny, because racists always say “i have a black friend.” Homophobic bigots do the same.

  51. Evan, I was going to respond to “Bob” but you took all my talking points and did so quite well. Bob has not the intellectual or moral courage to honestly examine his beliefs or to look at how much evidence there is that anything written in his buybull is true. If he did, his whole house of cards might come tumbling down and what would be left for him? The tragedy is that the rest of us have to suffer politically and socially because of the refusal of a substantial minority of the population to think rationally.
