(Weekly Column)

Virulently homophobic mega-church pastor, Bishop Eddie Long, stands accused of coercing four young men at his church to have sex with him, while lavishing these victims with money, vacations and cars. An adherent of the “prosperity gospel”, we now know that Long was sincere when he preached that all one had to do to gain material blessings was get on bended hand and knee and summit to His will.

In fairness to Long, this case still has to be tried in a court of law and it remains possible that he is innocent of the lurid charges. Every day, good people are accused of crimes they did not commit. Opportunists try to take advantage of rich and powerful people for financial gain or for notoriety in the age of reality television.

So, it would be premature to say that Long is a hypocritical scoundrel who abused his pastoral authority to gain access to sex and used anti-gay rhetoric to obscure his own homosexuality.

However, Long’s rambling Sunday sermon addressing the salacious allegations did not help his cause. It appeared that he penned the precise speech one would write if he were guilty and trying to parse words to keep power, while avoiding legal trouble.

Prior to the speech, Long was already appearing quite gay. Sexy photos of the allegedly conservative pastor were released where he stood in front of a mirror posing and preening in what appears to be tight spandex clothing. The overly muscle-bound preacher looked like a cartoonish hybrid of Barry Bonds and Richard Simmons.

Anyone who took a cursory glance at these photos had to wonder if Long’s muscles were as phony as his heterosexuality. Is there anything real about this flashy preacher who presides over 25,000-strong New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in suburban Georgia, and is courted by America’s leading politicians?

Indeed, both his physique and family life appear to be pumped full of steroids. His bulging biceps are matched by his surreally inflated portrayal of himself as an alpha male, writing an egotistical, laughably subtitled book, “What a Woman Needs to Know, What a Man Needs to Understand.

If Long is found guilty it should surprise no one, and his flock, in my view, deserves to be fooled and fleeced. Time and again, these now “stunned” parishioners ignored the pertinent facts of Long’s sketchy life to buy into the fabulous fiction he peddled each Sunday.

Indeed, The New York Times reports that Long, “worked as a sales representative for the Ford Motor Company, but was fired over inaccuracies in his expense accounts. He moved to Atlanta to study theology.”

One would think that Long’s incongruous move from alleged criminal to high-flying clergy would have raised red flags. If his suspicious past were not enough, his present incarnation as Bishop Bling – with a Bentley, bodyguards, Gucci sunglasses, gold necklaces, diamond bracelets and Rolex watches, should have made his flock run the other way.

But, they stayed and had no problem with his lavish lifestyle that includes a 5,000-square-foot house. (Perhaps, a place with large walk-in closets and plenty of space to bury the skeletons was essential to maintaining what increasingly appears to be a façade.)

Not only did they accept the Bishop, they wanted in on his success. So, in terms of guilt, Long’s shallow church membership is at least as guilty as he is. The preacher’s entire theology, after all, is to remake the skinny, poor, Jesus Christ into a muscle-bound mogul, much like himself. And the greedy, self-serving, fake Christians at Long’s church ate up this false portrayal of Jesus Christ as the Lord of Luxury because it jibed with their solipsistic lifestyle.

Back to the self-serving speech – it was obvious that the goal of Bishop Bling was to create a smokescreen to obscure the alleged gay fling. His tactic was to cast himself as a victim of a cruel world that was out to get him. Predictably, the exceedingly powerful Long ended his speech by saying, “I feel like David against Goliath, but I’ve got five rocks and I haven’t thrown one yet.”

No doubt, if his accusers can be believed, Long will have no problem getting his rocks off.

Long also tried to portray himself as an innocent bystander overtaken by external events that he likened to natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina. No, if Long is guilty, he is entirely responsible for this man-made calamity.

In a mid-1990’s sermon revealed on The Michelangelo Signorile Show, Long advocated the death penalty for gay people. A 2007 Southern Poverty Law Center report described Long as, “One of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement.”

Is it not obvious that the gayest thing one can do is be an anti-gay zealot? On the bright side, if Eddie Long comes out of the closet, at least his body is circuit party-ready!

FULL TRANSCRIPT:

Good morning New Birth. And good morning to all our other guests.

And I would be remiss not to say good morning to the world.

You all may be seated in the presence of the Lord.

I do want to remind folk that we’re here at 8 every Sunday morning. Every Sunday morning.

And I’ll be here next week.

First of all, let me thank you on behalf on my wife, my family, for all of your support, your prayers. We are certainly humbled by such a loving congregation. I realize that many have been waiting on me to say something. I have to do … (long applause)

My first responsibility is to my family. My next responsibility is not to address the world before I address my family, New Birth.

Because I’m pastor, I want to talk to you for a moment, make a statement and we’ll be gone.

This is an extremely difficult time for me, an extremely difficult time for my family. It’s an extremely difficult time for you, because many who’ve called you and ask you questions and all of these kind of things. You ain’t never got this many phone calls in your life. It’s a time when you actually see the veil dropped and who’s with you and who’s not with you.

So, as a pastor, I want to help everybody. The first thing, I just want to talk to you for about 10 or 15 minutes. I want to thank all the pastors who left their churches, all my sons, daughters. It wouldn’t be right without the preachers here. All my sons and daughters, pastors here, Bishop Murphy, Pastor Landers, Pastor William Murphy, I can go on and on and on out here … Pastor Davis and all, but I want to help all of us this morning .. if I can do that to say these things and then we’ll move.

This is difficult, difficult for everybody. This is probably the most difficult time in my entire life. And so I thought the first thing I might just say for everybody, I want to talk about how to handle painful and difficult situations. How to handle painful and difficult situations.

And I start with scripture from Psalms 34:19. Y’all did know I was gon’ use my Bible today. Of all days. I just wanna take just a few moments. And then I’ll say what the rest of you came to hear.

But I gotta talk to my family. Psalms 34:19 says many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of all of them.

Our purpose today is twofold, is to minister to those who are present, and to strengthen the New Birth family.

Above all this church, the church of the living God, and all that is precious and holy in this wonderful moment. And I want you to focus on what the spirit of God has to speak to us, not to focus on Eddie Long. There’s a simple emphasis that I would like to use to minister and was given direction to our church and family in this time of … because you gotta understand the reality of painful situations. You gotta understand the response to painful situations, and then we have to know what the remedy is for painful situations.

The reality of a painful situation, I would refer to Isiah 43:2, just write it down, it says, when you pass through the waters, I will be with you. And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. And when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned. Nor shall the flames scorch you. Unfortunately, my brothers and my sisters, life is filled with painful situations that makes the time of joy and happiness not as magnificent as we would like.

As long as man has to deal in life, you will find that life will be unfair, the rain’s on the just and unjust. And we’re all subject to face distasteful and painful situations.

Bishop Long — Eddie Long — and you can put your name in that blank, will have some bad situations. The righteous face painful situations with a determined expectancy. We are not exempt from pain, but He promises to deliver us out of our pain.

Solutions or situations of destruction, pain caused by floods, pain caused by earthquakes, tsunamis, Katrina, those that had to be relocated, lost things in a day, the stress, the challenge of painful situations.

Some in here, situation of disease and sickness, have been to the doctor, got reports that wasn’t favorable, that’s why we do our confessions at the ending of that 21 days to bring you into wholeness. Painful situations. Situations of disappointment, hopelessness, situations of unmet expectations; situations of death, there’s parents in here who’ve lost children and people who were suddenly taken away in car accidents or unexpected things. Situations of deception, when one has been betrayed by those that they love; situations of divorce when love turns into resentment; situations, and the greatest pain in life is to love somebody that doesn’t love you back.

Without a doubt there are painful situations in life that are inescapable. Protections from painful situations are absolutely impossible. Trust me, I tried to find them. Preparation is the most important, but the response to painful situations is, also. Matthew 6:33 says seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all other things will be added unto you.

We can not always control and avoid painful situations, but we can control our response to them. We must decide in the midst of all that occurs, that we will maintain our righteous focus and spiritual witness. Some possible responses as I close and move.

You can curse it, and allow the situation to make you bitter.

You can nurse it and allow the situation to make you a blamer.

You can rehearse it and allow the situation to be relived and make you a worse person because you continue to go over it and over it and live in that pain.

Or you can reverse it, and allow the situation, response, to cause you to be better.

We will not allow the present pain to cause us to abandon our righteous commitment and stand.

Someway and somehow we will become better and we will walk through this painful situation.

The remedy for a painful situation is described by David in the best way that I know how to make it through rough times. Yea though I walk through the valleys and the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You art with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. David, the writer, gives us an insight of how to make it through a painful time. Because he seems to be focused on something higher than the pain. We can make it through these times if we focus on the spiritual things that has brought us through this far.

So I just took the power and took the first letters of that word and this new birth is our focus.

No. 1 is the P for the power of prayer. Not just for me and not just for my family, but also for everyone concerned in these allegations and all that is going on. We must stay prayerful for the nations and prayerful for our president. We have a wonderful opportunity and it is election time in Georgia and it’s very important. We cannot be distracted and not go to the polls because we’re trying to chase folk down. Early voting is now. You can go and vote. Because Jesus teaches us we have to love our enemies and pray for them, too.

The next letter is O for outreach. We cannot allow these things to distract us from our mission to seek and to save the lost. We are going after the lost. And some of you who think I’m lost … and your need to see God, there’ll be an opportunity to come down to the altar. We must continue to minister to those who are lost.

The W is for worship. We must focus on the power of worship. New Birth, we have some powerful worship here and we ain’t gon’ stop having it. There’s been healing going forth, deliverance going forth. All kind of things that happen in the power of worship. You just need to focus yourself and look back on the wonderful dimension of worship that God is continuing to take us in.

The E is for encouragement. We must be there to encourage one another. The Bible says David had to encourage himself. He had to do that because he was alone. We are not alone. There’s a whole lot of folk up in here, up in here, up in here. And there’s a whole lot of people that we can use to encourage each other.

And finally the R is for resolve. We must not forget that our strength is not in man, but in the Lord. We have come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord. We have a reliance on the holy spirit. And the scripture teaches us that they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up on wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk….

There have been allegations and attacks made on me. I have never in my life portrayed myself as a perfect man. But I am not the man that’s being portrayed on the television. That’s not me. That is not me.

By the counsel of my lawyers, they have advised me not to try this case in the media. I am not gon’ try this case in the media. It will be tried in the court of justice and dealt with in the court of justice and please understand because that’s the only place I think I’ll get justice, but being in the hands of God.

Please hear this. Please hear this: I’ve been accused. I’m under attack. I want you to know, as I said earlier, I am not a perfect man. But this thing I’m gon’ fight.

And I want you to to know one other thing. I feel like David against Goliath, but I’ve got five rocks and I haven’t thrown one yet.

The bishop hard at work, ministering to his flockYou’re all probably up on the Bishop Eddie Long situation, but if not:

Mega-church Bishop Eddie Long is set to go on radio on Thursday to make a statement on the civil lawsuits filed against him over allegations of sexually abusing three young males from his congregation. Long, who is reportedly an anti-gay pastor, allegedly abused the three young men and coerced them to do sexual acts.

According to various reports, Eddie Long lavished the young men with gifts such as money, cars, clothes and jewellery and lured them into a homosexual relationship with him. A spokesman for the mega-church bishop said the lawsuits were a “shakedown.” Long is known for his frequent denunciation of gay acts. In 2007, the Southern Poverty Law Center’s magazine published an article about the bishop and called him “one of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement.”

The lawsuits were filed by Jamal Parris, Anthony Flagg and Maurice Murray Robinson, all are around 20 to 23 years of age. The three, who were said to be in their teens when the allegations happened, where placed in a group called the “Spiritual Sons,” which followed the mega-church leader in his sorties. All three alleged that the bishop’s sexual coercions took place when they were a part of the group and all shared a similar story – that they were taken on trips, shared a room with Bishop Long and engaged in touching and oral sexual contact with him.

As is usually the case, the louder the anti-gay rantings are, the more boys the ranter is likely to have stuffed in some sort of closet. PZ Myers put it this way:

It’s gotten so I can’t see any of these crazy god-wallopers and not assume they’re going to leave the podium and run off to a back room to do exactly what they’ve been railing against. It’s sort of like a Dorian Gray scheme: they’ve got a lilly-white sanctimonious face for the public, and what they reveal when off-camera and out of sight is something sickeningly depraved. What Pope Ratzi does behind closed doors must be nightmarish.

Nightmarish, indeed.

Yeah, so none of this is surprising.  Guess who’s offered his support?  Ted Haggard.

Heh.

By the way, I don’t think the picture above is his the one from his church website, but Jim Burroway cautions that if you see that picture on Grindr, RUN.

UPDATE:  Oh lookie, “The Other Evan Hurst” also wrote about this at the Wonkette!  Here:  Selfless Drag Queen Teaches Republican Politicians Valuable Lesson About Honesty

So, this video is going around today.  I found it at The Advocate, which explains:

[Drag queen Sherry] Vine’s “You’re a Homo” song and video mimics Gaga’s homoerotic clip for her single “Alejandro.” Instead of poking fun at Gaga’s slinky male dancers, Vine points out the damaging effects of the closet. Specifically, Vine “outs” antigay politicians like former Idaho senator Larry Craig and blames closeted conservatives for bringing about hate crimes, including the murder of Matthew Shepard.

I defy you not to laugh heartily when the first chorus starts.  And yes, it is a very important message.

Like many of you, I was raised to believe that Gallagher, the bald comedian who smashed a lot of fruit, was hilarious.  It was never quite true, but whatever.  ”Ha ha, he is smashing lots of fruit,” we would say, and then we would go along our merry way.  But then Gallagher sort of disappeared, and I never thought of him again until I read this review of a show he just did in Bremerton, Washington.  It turns out that Gallagher is the prototypical wingnut comedian,  funny only to those who share his bigotry and paranoia.  And wow, he has fear-driven bigotry and paranoia in droves:

Gallagher is upset about a lot of things. Young people with their sagging pants (in faintly coded racist terms, he explains that this is why the jails are overcrowded—because “their” baggy pants make it too hard for “them” to run from the cops). Tattoos: “That ink goes through to your soul—if you read your Bible, your body is a sacred temple, YOU DIPSHIT.” People naming their girl-children Sam and Toni instead of acceptable names like Evelyn and Betty: “Just give her some little lesbian tendencies!” Guantánamo Bay: “We weren’t even allowed to torture all the way. We had to half-torture—that’s nothin’ compared to what Saddam and his two sons OOFAY and GOOFAY did.” Lesbians: “There’s two types—the ugly ones and the pretty ones.” (Um, like all people?) Obama again: “If Obama was really black, he’d act like a black guy and get a white wife.” Michael Vick: “Poor Michael Vick.” Women’s lib: “These women told you they wanna be equal—they DON’T.” Trans people: “People like Cher’s daughter—figure that out. She wants a penis, but she has a big belly. If you can’t see your dick, you don’t get one.” The Rice Krispies elves: “All three of those guys are gay. Look at ‘em!” The Mexicans: “Look around—see any Mexicans? Nope. They’ll be here later for the cleanup.” The French: “They ruin our language with their faggy words.”

Let’s see here.  Gallagher is not funny and is afraid of black people, tattoos, girls with boy names, lesbians, Muslims, Barack Obama, people who like dogs, Chaz Bono, gays, Mexicans, and French people.  Can you imagine living such a pathetic life?

He especially is afraid (and OH so jealous) of gay men:

Above all, everything is gay, gay, gay to Gallagher. He leans into it with the borderline- nonsensical, icked-out, ignorant glee of a boy—or the protest-too-much vigor of a GOP senator. Gallagher delivers your Bible verse for the day: “Without God, we are nothing but dust. What is butt dust? Is that what you get if your homosexual isn’t properly lubricated?” He relates a story about spilling mouthwash onto his crotch during a show: “Lucky for me, there was no homosexuals in the area—’cause my balls was minty fresh.” At other points during the show, Gallagher says, “Men and women can’t live in the same house” and “There’s no way men and women can have a relationship.” He says he can’t remember why he used to feel pleasure in looking at a woman. And, “There’s only one kind of homosexual guy, and that’s the pretty ones—why do homosexual men have to be so good-looking?” Gallagher. Listen. Is there something you want to share with us?

A thought:  Maybe Gallagher’s predilection for smashing fruits in all their forms is a much deeper piece of performance art that none of us understood at the time.  By taking a mallet to as many pieces of fruit he could, each and every night, he was trying to kill the biggest fruit within.

Ha ha, just kidding, Gallagher’s not smart enough to do something that symbolic.  I’m only half kidding, though:

Then Gallagher gets a tin pie plate. He opens a giant can of fruit cocktail and pours it in. He opens a can of some Asian vegetable—water chestnuts, maybe—and pours that in, too. “This is the China people and queers!!!” he screams and takes his sledgehammer to the thing with a fury that is no fun at all. Wet chunks of China people and queers fly everywhere. The hateful, bitter old man laughs.

How painfully sad.  Be sure to read the whole review so you can see how delusional he is.  The poor thing thinks he’s some sort of legend.  In reality, though, the rest of us will forget about him again tomorrow.

It’s your weekly “Homophobic religious leader is gay” story!

Remember when a tornado struck downtown Minneapolis last year and broke the cross atop a downtown church?

Minneapolis Pastor Tom Brock made a whole bunch of waves by suggesting that the twister was God’s retribution for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America voting at its national convention in Minneapolis that day to take up — and pass — a resolution that allows for openly gay clergy could serve as ministers.

“The apostasy is now complete” in the ELCA, he told conservative Christian radio host David Wheaton not long afterward.

So we assume he’s going to step down. Because he’s gay, it turns out. Lavender outed him in its most recent issue.

Quelle surprise!

Read it all here, if you want. It’s pretty funny, and well worth the read.

Picture: Me lifting my own luggage at Miami International Airport

Lift LuggageIt was once a speculative clich?© to say that rabidly anti-gay individuals were actually closeted, self-loathing homosexuals. But thanks to an avalanche of hypocrites, the notion is quickly becoming a truism.

Last month, the nation alternately cackled and cringed when virulently homophobic “researcher” George Rekers was photographed at Miami International Airport with an attractive hustler he met on RentBoy.com. The good doctor, who had testified in court against LGBT people adopting children, said he only hired the young escort to “lift his luggage”.

Before the laughter over the Rekers ruckus subsided, another anti-gay phony was unmasked for his baloney. Activist Mike Rogers outed Congressman Mark Kirk, (R-Il) after the closet case voted against the repeal of Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell. According to Rogers:

“Kirk voted against repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, despite his being a closeted gay man in the military. As a Commander in the Navy Reserves, Kirk has voted to keep a policy that if he were investigated under he would be tossed.”

mark_kirkPrior to his unconscionable vote, Kirk (pictured)had a relatively respectable record on LGBT issues. However, in his bid for the U.S. Senate, Kirk veered to the right, which included posing as a homophobe. Now that he has been exposed as a fraud, one wonders if the Tea baggers will still consider him their cup of tea.

Another maxim that appears to be accurate is the one that says, “those who have genuine family values never utter the words “family values.”

Seriously, how bored with your spouse, dissatisfied with your life, and spiritually empty do you have to be to unctuously parade your family as a prop on the public stage?

The most recent lowlife squirming under the family values banner is Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.) who announced that he would resign from Congress because he had an affair with a woman on his staff. He follows in the footsteps of Sen. John Ensign (R-NV), Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) and Gov. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.). When will voters finally wise up to these religious racketeers who sell a morality mirage?

Just as gay-obsessed anti-gay activists are often gay, and holier-than-thou politicians are likely to be having sex with everyone but their spouses, one should also be leery of nations prone to attacking their LGBT citizens. While these gaypride2004-0countries pose as beacons of the biblical banner, their professions of piousness often mask moral mayhem. It seems that almost every anti-gay nation is an authoritarian, cesspool of corruption.

Jamaica, for example has been called one of the most homophobic lands on earth. The island’ Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, said he would not have an openly gay person in his cabinet. Yet, it appears he, and nearly every other politician in Jamaica, is in cahoots with local mafia dons who deal in death and drugs.

A story in Tuesday’ New York Times discusses this unseemly “arrangement”:

In fact, money has flowed into those communities for decades, thanks to an arrangement in Jamaica in which politicians and dons share power. Through extortion and the drug trade, the dons provide security, and by steering contracts and other pork to the neighborhoods, the politicians count on the continued loyalty of voters.

Where are all the outspoken fundamentalists who ferociously condemn gays and make a big show about Jamaica’ values? We keep hearing how this island is a pristine “Christian Nation”, but where are the Christians when you need them to stand up to endemic corruption?

It seems these self-righteous cowards attack defenseless sexual minorities, while turning a blind eye to the most sordid transgressions of scripture. While the epidemics of murder and theft genuinely affect their families — gay people do not. Yet, the misled masses in Jamaica choose to focus on a non-issue like homosexuality, while disregarding factors that have kept their children mired in poverty and pain.

MugabeJamaica is not alone in using LGBT people as scapegoats to distract the public from naked political power grabs. Zimbabwe’ brutal dictator, Robert Mugabe, (pictured) practically wrote the playbook on using gays as political pawns when he once said they were worse than pigs and dogs. Uganda’ president Yoweri Musevini has clung to power for twenty-four years and uses gay people to sidetrack citizens who might otherwise be upset that he has squelched democratic reform. In Northern Ireland, anti-gay conservative parliament member, and the 58-year-old wife of the Prime Minister, Iris Robinson, had an affair with a 19-year-old male lover.

While being gay is normal and natural, homophobia is not. It is often a sickness or a deliberate distraction designed to deceive the na?Øve. And, nations with leaders that are homophobic often scream “perversion” as a smoke and mirrors diversion. It is time people woke up and realized that when someone is rabidly anti-gay they usually want you to look the other way.

This is a step in the right direction. Next up, I’m sure NARTH will do the right thing and disavow all the junk science George Rekers provided them over the years on the subject of sexual orientation.

Haha, just kidding, NARTH will never do the right thing.

George Rekers resigned this morning from the board of NARTH, the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, amid a gay escort scandal.

NARTH vice president of operations David Pruden tells TPMmuckraker that Rekers first offered his resignation last Thursday, and officially resigned today.

NARTH is a group that promotes the idea that homosexuality can, and should, be cured.

Pruden also denied a report in the Miami New Times that NARTH had been involved in helping Rekers respond to the media.

“NARTH has never had any role in advising Dr. Rekers except to suggest that if he is innocent he needs to get a good lawyer,” Pruden said in an email. “He has friends who are members of NARTH and they are free to talk with, advise, and needless to say, they are free to help him in any way they might select.”

Jack and Jill went up the hill to gay marry George and Martha WashingtonPerhaps I missed it, but I don’t ever remember a specific unit on “straight” relationships in elementary school, but Tennessee wingnut legislator Stacey Campfield just wants to make sure that kids don’t learn about any part of reality that happens to be gay:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ‚Äî A Democratic lawmaker from Memphis opposed to legislation that would prohibit teaching about gay relationships in Tennessee public schools told the Republican sponsor today that the practice is a “figment of his imagination.”

The proposal sponsored by Republican Rep. Stacey Campfield of Knoxville was sent back to the State Board of Education for further study by the House Education K-12 Subcommittee. It’s at least the second year that the same panel has killed the measure.

Campfield claimed to have proof that some state counties could be headed toward such teachings. For instance, he said one school system has removed filtering software from its class computers.

Rep. Ulysses Jones, a Memphis Democrat who voted against the bill, said Campfield’s claims are not factual.

“What we’re dealing with is a figment of his imagination,” Jones said. “This is not based on any evidence.”

The proposal sought to prohibit the “teaching of … human sexuality other than heterosexuality in public school grades K-8.”

Campfield said the state should “stay neutral” and leave it up to parents whether they want to talk about anything other than heterosexuality.

Because kids need to be protected from the harsh light of reality as long as possible.

Newsflash, little weasel: kids already learn about gay relationships, even in Tennessee, because they have gay family members, friends, parents, and the like. And no, they don’t learn about gay sex (the wingnut Stacey’s true fear) any more than they learn about straight sex from simply observing the fact that, oh look, their friend from school has two mommies.

Thank you, Ulysses Jones, for not pretending that Campfield’s little stunt has any intellectual merit, and calling it out as the fever dream that it is.

As the above article mentions, Campfield has been barking up this Caucasian Wingnut tree for a while now. When he first introduced it in 2008, he explained it like this:

“If I were to say ‘Jack and Jill went up the hill’ or ‘George Washington and Martha Washington were husband and wife,’ there are groups out there that would say we were pushing a heterosexual agenda. To keep those lawsuits from coming, I thought we should still be able to talk about that side of it,” Campfield says.

Really? Because Jack and Jill have been going up that hill for quite a long time now, but nowhere near as long as it’s been since George and Martha gay married each other heterosexually, and I haven’t heard of one lawsuit. Perhaps I don’t read the missives from Campfield’s mothership.

Anyway, the bill is basically dead until the Wingnut Wonder of Knoxville decides to bring it up again next year. Or until the bill dies laughing when Campfield is caught with his pants down at a rest stop or something.

A little more background on Stacey Campfield:

Over the years, Campfield has proposed other controversial legislation, such as replacing the state’s food tax with a tax on pornography and requiring the state to issue death certificates for aborted fetuses. In 2005, Campfield compared the state’s Black Caucus to the Ku Klux Klan when they refused to let him join because he is white.

Do you remember what I was saying just one post back about how wingnuts are never just wingnutty about one thing? They always are screwed up and paranoid about a whole list of things which pose no threat to them at all. Campfield’s hang-ups are generally “not being allowed to do something that black people can” and “not being able to control sexual activity that doesn’t involve his and other likeminded penises, subservient wives, and a hole in a sheet.”

Pathetic.

And even more background on Stacey Campfield, about the time he got kicked out of a University of Tennessee football game on Halloween:

According to a report by UT Police Lt. Dana McReynolds, the Knoxville Republican was wearing a “Luchador’ (Mexican wrestler’) full head mask” during the game against South Carolina despite publicity before and during the game that Halloween masks were not allowed inside Neyland Stadium.

Campfield is not named in the narrative, but his identity was later learned by McReynolds through a driver’ license check. Campfield’ identity was confirmed Monday by UT spokeswoman Karen Collins.

(…)

McReynolds and a Knox County Sheriff’ Office deputy found the masked man and asked him to step into the portal.

“I told him masks were not allowed in the stadium and told him he would have to take it off,” McReynolds wrote. “He asked why and I again told him that masks were not allowed and he could either give the mask to me or take it off and put it away. Before I could finish my sentence he took off the mask and asked if he could keep it. I told him “yes’ and thanked him for complying.”

The officer noted that Campfield then re-entered the stadium area but went a different direction than his original seat.

“Curious about this odd behavior and concerned that he had misunderstood our interaction, I caught up with him in front of the concession stand in Section D,” McReynolds wrote. “I … began to tell him that I was not asking him to leave the section, just to take off his mask. Again … he interrupted and said, “I was just taking a walk. Is it illegal to walk around?’ I told him “no,’ and was surprised by his sudden confrontational attitude. … He again asked if walking around was illegal. I told him “no’ and again began to explain that he did not have to leave his seat, just take off the mask. He continued to ask if walking around was illegal. … Thinking that something was not right (he kept saying the same phrase over and over, would not make eye contact and kept shifting on his feet, left to right) I asked to see his ticket.”

And it just kept going…and going…and the wingnut child kept repeating the same words over and over again…

As we’ve seen so clearly in the Fulton, Mississippi story lately, another thing wingnuts have in common is that they’re essentially overgrown adolescents.

Campfield is is a pretty good sketch of the prototypical wingnut, really. Childish, not very bright, creepy, sex-obsessed, misogynistic, bigoted…

So anyway, now you know Stacey if you didn’t already. Don’t you wish you lived in Tennessee now?
