Glenn Beck and Michele Bachmann are losing it in this clip over the possibility of the military repealing its ban on sodomy [duh], because that code also includes a ban on bestiality. Yes, wingnuts, the one thing keeping our troops from buggering furry woodland creatures is a code. Does this help people to understand why wingnuts become wingnuts? They are humans for whom the only thing standing between them and an utter lack of control is laws, whether the ones they believe are from God or from the state.
Those of us with either more sane versions of religion or no religion at all shake our heads in wonder/terror at these people.
In terms of con artists Glenn Beck is really good. I just saw him speak at the Values Voters Summit and he has extremely high entertainment value. He is a master performer and can pull tears out of the sky when he needs to. However, in terms of substance, he needs a little work.
The low point of his sermon came when he repeatedly attacked people who got college loans and then complained when they were in debt. His answer: Skip college and educate yourself at the public library.
Sadly, the brainwashed and the brain dead sheep in the crowd cheered when he said this. Did they really hear what he was saying? Had they doomed their own children’s careers by not helping them obtain financing for college. Or, maybe they are hypocrites and got the loans for their own children and simply don’t give a damn about the future of other peoples’ kids.
I thought it was telling that Beck never suggested what people should do when asked for their education level on resumes. Should their resumes simply read “public library”? And since conservatives hate public anything, won’t these institutions be on the chopping block too one day?
I’m ready to go home. The Values Voter Summit is just a collection of angry fundamentalists with wacky views who go through remarkable contortions to mask their true intentions. It’s a sad lot.
Hi, I’m playing catch-up here, so if you’ve seen this already, great! You already know about the bubble that you, as a gay, are blowing, that is messing up Michele Bachmann’s concept of the “family.” If not:
“The family is on a bubble right now. The rate of cohabitating couples in one year increased 13 percent,” she said. “The family is the ultimate first form and first unit in government and society.”
She added, “The bureaucrats now hate our values; there’s a war on marriage, a war on family, a war on fertility all while funding and promoting abortion.”
Bachmann continued, “We don’t need political correctness because most fundamentally I believe the building block of the family is what the government needs to do right now and support two-parent families as the foundation of our economic and social policy.”
She said for that reason, social issues need to be a priority. “We can’t put the so called social issues on the back burner while we are solving our economic challenges because the family is the solution to those challenges.”
Yet another bubble Bachmann sees is the “national security bubble,” and the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the ban on gay and lesbian servicemembers repealed by the U.S. Senate in December, is one of those things that is creating the bubble.
“President Obama is applying a politically correct standard to the United States military that cannot be tolerated in our country,” she said, adding that Obama is babying jihadists.
Bubbles! But if she really wants to support two-parent families, I’d suggest that she wrap her crazy eyes around the fact that there are lots of GAY two-parent families out there raising children, so unless Michele Bachmann wants to be seen as only supporting SOME children, she’d better sharpen up. Also, all sane military analysts agree that DADT repeal will strengthen our military.
So that’s the part about gayness, but since this woman fancies herself a presidential candidate, it’s also important to note that in the same speech, Michele Bachmann suggested that Glenn Beck could fix our deficit with his chalkboards. Oh, goody.
Today on his radio show, Beck admitted he knew what it looks like and “doesn’t care” after receiving a healthy amount of joshing from the rest of the Glenn Beck Program team.
Co-host Pat Gray started things off by helpfully reminding listeners that, while (to paraphrase Seinfeld) “there’s nothing wrong with gay parenting manuals,” the book doesn’t actually specialize in parenting tips for gay couples even though its cover features Beck’s son and two men “in Mr. Rogers sweaters.” Beck helpfully explained that co-author Dr. Keith Ablow was added to the image later and that he wanted the cover the way it was because the book isn’t about politics but, rather, about “being happy and finding yourself.”
Glenn Beck and Keith Ablow totally love each other, you know it.
This is the most pointless survey, and accompanying article, I have ever seen, at least this week.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Protestant pastors overwhelmingly believe that Oprah Winfrey isn’t a Christian, but three-quarters of them say former president George W. Bush is.
Winfrey and Bush, along with Glenn Beck, Barack Obama and Sarah Palin, comprised the list that LifeWay Research presented to Protestant pastors along with the question, “Which, if any, of the following people do you believe are Christians?”
The majority of Americans self-identify as Christian, and Protestant is the largest category of Christian denominations. With that in mind, LifeWay Research set out to examine the beliefs of pastors leading Protestant churches. The national telephone survey took place Oct. 7-14 and included 1,000 interviews.
Winfrey earned the lowest affirmative response, with only 19 percent of pastors saying they believe she is a Christian. The other television personality on the list, Beck, earned the second lowest affirmative response at 27 percent.
Ooh, but Barry O was in third place, just behind Dubya and Snow Snooki!
File this crap in your Useless Information databank — maybe it will come up in trivia one day!
Stopped clocks are indeed right twice a day. It’s good to see, though, any time a public figure like Glenn Beck reacts so fiercely to anti-gay behavior or violence, because his is an audience that needs to hear it.
Glenn Beck returned to his television show Wednesday with a lengthy, impassioned condemnation of the brutal anti-gay assault and torture of two teenage boys and a man in the Bronx.
[...]
Beck said the attackers — who, among other things, tortured, beat and sodomized their victims — represented “a whole new level of evil.” He agreed that the attacks were grounded in homophobia, but said they went beyond just that.
“This is not only anti-gay, it is anti-human,” he said. “It is bigotry for sport.”
Indeed. Oh my, I just said “indeed” in response to Glenn Beck. Oh my. He’s really pissed off, though.
Hop over to Mediaite for the video, as it seems to be incompatible with our software. Doy!
Glenn Beck may not personally care whether or not gays can get married, but the wingnuts who form his worldview certainly do. Media Matters has put together a handy little guide, which includes quotes and background on the following people in Beck’s sphere of influence:
David Barton
James Dobson
Randy Forbes
Jim Garlow
John Hagee
Terence Henry
Alveda King
Richard Land
Daniel Lapin
Patrick Lee
Richard Lee
Miles McPherson
Chuck Norris
Sarah Palin
James Robison
Charles Stanley
Teabaggers/Glenn Beck fans/wingnuts in general tend to reflexively claim, any time they’re videotaped, that they’ve been edited to look dumber than they actually are. So here, via Joe, is the part of the video New Left Media’s Chase Whiteside didn’t show us the first time.
As for music this week, I’ve been listening to a lot of The Magnetic Fields lately. If you’re not familiar, Stephin Merritt just might be our greatest living songwriter. I’m not even exaggerating. And, as this is a Gay Website, I should point out that Stephin Merritt is a Gay. The lyrics of the two songs I’m posting couldn’t be more different (Google them, or listen closely), but for me, this week, they’re related for some reason. So we’ll start with “Yeah! Oh Yeah!” and “Papa Was A Rodeo,” and then, if you’re not all weeping after listening to the second song, we’ll hit shuffle on the iTunes (version 10, which is, I agree, ghastly), and see what happens. More videos after the Random Ten and the jump.
One more thing: Have a safe Labor Day weekend, whatever you’re doing. This especially goes for all of those of you that I know and love who are on their way to The Homosexual Olympics Southern Decadence in New Orleans.
Okay, music:
1. Barbra Streisand – “Move On” [Mom, Dad, um, I'm gay...]
2. Wilco – “At Least That’s What You Said”
3. These New Puritans – “We Want War”
4. Phantogram – “When I’m Small”
5. Cale Parks – “Wet Paint”
