It seems that Exodus International doesn’t like the attention it’s receiving lately.  They were under the impression that they were going to coast through a poorly researched special on the Oprah Winfrey Network, as they grasp for relevance in a society that increasingly rejects their “work” for the junk science it is and the harm it causes.  Instead, they have come under increased scrutiny as Truth Wins Out has led the effort to expose the shoddy reporting of Lisa Ling’s special, and now with our project demanding that Apple remove Exodus’s bigoted iPhone app:

Truth Wins Out today urged people to continue signing its Change.org petition to demand that Apple remove an offensive and scientifically bankrupt “ex-gay” iPhone app that was created by Exodus International, a group that believes people can and should “pray away the gay”. Truth Wins Out also released a new video today highlighting why Apple should be socially responsible and remove the app.

Truth Wins Out has reached out to Apple several times and the company has not yet responded. If Apple continues to bury its head in the sand, we will hold a press conference in front of their offices featuring sexual and spiritual abuse victims of “ex-gay” programs.

[...]

“Apple doesn’t allow racist or anti-Semitic apps in its store, yet it gives the green light to an app written by an anti-gay extremist group that targets vulnerable sexual-minority youth with the message that they are ‘sinful’ and ‘perverse,’” said Truth Wins Out’s Director of Communications and Development John Becker. “This is a double standard that should not stand.”

Now, Alan Chambers and Randy Thomas are pulling out the tiny violins, claiming on Facebook that they are “under attack.” Seasoned watchers of the Religious Right will recognize this language as a plea for sympathy, and also money.  Randy is very upset that people are saying mean, terrible things to them on their blog and on Facebook.  [In all likelihood, people are simply robustly telling them how wrong they are, about everything.]

As most of you are probably aware, especially if you have been on facebook or twitter, the protest against the Exodus iPhone app is escalating. As of this email the petition to have Apple remove it has grown to over 48,000 signatures. http://www.change.org/petitions/demand-that-apple-remove-ex-gay-iphone-app#?opt_new=t&opt_fb=t For some context,Thursday it was around 7,000.

This weekend we are getting slammed with terrible, truly nasty emails, tweets, facebook and blog comments. I allowed some difficult ones through on the blog and could use your help in responding to some of those. http://exodusinternational.org/2011/03/exodus-releases-new-smartphone-application/

Don’t worry, I will not let any ugliness develop. On the blog I catch them before anyone else sees them. That said, if your comment doesn’t immediately go through it is because I have to approve it. I can also toggle trusted friends to be automatically approved in the future. The comments I have let through that oppose our app, might be difficult but they do not represent the many more that were very hostile toward Exodus. I am hoping that a direct but loving response to these comments will be informative to all the people (literally thousands and thousands) who are being directed toward that page.

We could also use your help on the facebook page http://facebook.com/exodusinternational and our Twitter account at http://twitter.com/exodusintl. I can’t stop facebook comments before they come in and we obviously can’t stop someone from tweeting about us. Leah and I have been all over the hateful Facebook comments when they do come in so they don’t stay on the page long. Even so, ANY supportive comments and encouragement would be welcome on Facebook and Twitter as well.

Of course, Truth Wins Out readers are free to visit any of those links above. Please do not be cruel, as most of the cogs in the Exodus machine are professional victims, but feel free to robustly explain to them why they are getting this attention right now. A bit later, Randy’s whine gets really good:

Please pray for Exodus, Exodus Member Ministries, Counselors and Churches. We need your prayers for wisdom as we seek a way to answer this baseless all-out assault on our lives and beliefs. It’s much more than just an iPhone app. God’s work through Exodus is being mocked, ridiculed and stigmatized. And while we do not fight as the world fights, we can speak up lovingly and redemptively in the face of persecution. Truth never comes back void and God’s love and grace abound much greater than anything the world has to offer.

“As we seek a way to answer this baseless all-out assault on our lives and beliefs.”

Gee golly, Randall, isn’t that what the Religious Right, and their willing tools in Exodus, have been doing to LGBT people for decades?  The projection here is simply unreal.  Moreover, any human with Google and a brain can do a little research and see that this project to have the iPhone app removed is anything but a “baseless all-out assault.”  When scientists are coming forward and asking that an app be removed [your app], because it blatantly misrepresents their work, and when that is only the icing on the cake, you’ve got a problem.  The entire mission of Exodus International is based on lies, verifiable harm, and unrepentant bigotry against an entire class of people.  And now you’re going to take to your computer and whine about being “attacked”?  Please.

Also participating in the whining is Alan Chambers himself, who posted the following status on Facebook:

With some of the hate messages I am getting I am about ready to move my family to a gated community. Feeling a bit unsafe at the moment.

OH GIVE ME A BREAK. Nobody is going to hurt you or your family, Alan! You are the one who hurts families. NOT US.

Later on, Alan asks what I find to be a very simple question, for which there is a very simple answer:

Alan Manning Chambers Do these people not listen to our message? UGH!

YES. And that is why this is happening, because people are truly listening to the two-faced, dishonest bile that comes out of the spokesmouths of your organization.

Period.

At the moment, there are 96,514 signatures on our petition to have the Exodus iPhone app removed.  Go here to add your name to the list if you haven’t already.

Doctor Says His Work Was Misrepresented By Exodus International and Misleads App Users

More at Minneapolis Star Tribune

RamafediUniversity of Minnesota researcher Dr. Gary Remafedi wrote a letter today asking Apple founder Steve Jobs and interim CEO Tim Cook to remove a controversial “ex-gay” app from its online store. The scientist claimed that Exodus International distorted his work in an effort to misrepresent homosexuality and confuse the app’s users.

When one clicks the Exodus app, it directs the viewer to a webpage that answers questions about homosexuality. One of the question sequences is, “If people are same-sex attracted but don’t ever act on it, does that make them homosexual? What if they do engage in same-sex physical intimacy? Are they homosexual then?”

In answering these questions, Exodus twists the findings of Dr. Remafedi to make it appear as if homosexuality is just a transitory phase in youth.

“Exodus depends on distorting the work of legitimate researchers and using junk science to trick its vulnerable clients into believing they can go from gay to straight,” said Wayne Besen, Executive Director for Truth Wins Out. “Apple should not aid and abet the spread of deliberate scientific misinformation, nor should they create a pernicious platform for anti-gay lies.”

Dr. Gary Remafedi sent the following letter to Steve Jobs and Tim Cook this morning:

Dear Messrs. Jobs and Cook,

This message serves as a request to remove the Exodus International application from Apple’s iphone offerings because the website content is objectionable. It erroneously cites my research (Remafedi 1992) in support of claims that homosexuality can be changed.

Various professional organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, have taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental or physical condition. Programs which aim to change sexual orientation have been opposed because they are unwarranted, ineffective, unethical, and harmful.

Exodus’s website features an article (Buchanan 2010) which makes erroneous statements and conclusions and attributes them to Remafedi (1992). Statements were made to the effect to that many teens are confused about their sexual orientation and that sexual orientation is amenable to change.  Further, associating my work with that of the ex-gay ministry and other unfounded treatments is professionally injurious and grievous.

As a savvy consumer, I understand that corporations market phones both by offering a wide array of applications and by appealing to niche audiences like Exodus’s. In turn, Exodus applies the Apple “4+” smartphone application rating to its own website as an imprimatur (see http://exodusinternational.org/).

From my perspective, the risk of offending and harming consumers by providing a platform for erroneous information about an important health and social topic far outweighs the potential financial gain. Arguably, corporations have no affirmative responsibility to vendors under the First Amendment of the Constitution, but they are accountable for the quality and consequences of their products.

For the aforementioned reasons, I ask Apple to revoke the 4+ rating and delete the Exodus application from the iphone’s menu of applications.

Respectfully,

Gary Remafedi, M.D., M.P.H.

After soft-peddling the intolerant work of Exodus International on Our America with Lisa Ling, Alan Chambers is playing to his base in a major way. He is enthusiastically  throwing red meat and hawking an austere, fundamentalist version of religion. Where was the real Alan Chambers on the Oprah Winfrey Network? Anyway, here are his actual views on moderate Christians, taken from an article he wrote on his group’s website:

Unfortunately we are now seeing a pendulum shift in which some Christians have moved beyond the truth-only stance to embrace a grace-only view.  This shift is affecting how homosexuality is being viewed and is just as damaging as a truth-only response. First, there are many Christians who now believe that chastity is the only answer for those with same-sex attractions.  They believe that people are either gay or straight and that their identities, in that regard, are fixed.  If someone is gay then the only option, according to these Christians, is celibacy.  Everything else that comes with gay life, however, is acceptable.  So, as long as someone remains sex-free they are able to hang out in gay bars and identify fully as gay.

Is hanging out at gay bars a real problem for Exodus’ clients?

In the last few years Exodus has seen many Christians and churches soften their truth-only response to the issue of homosexuality and instead have embraced Christ’s example of communicating with absolute truth AND grace.  What God is He is fully. He isn’t 50/50 on anything.  He was, is and forever will be complete in everything that He is.  Completely good.  Completely just.  Completely truth.  Completely grace.  For a large segment of Christ’s Bride to become more like Him is a wonderful thing.

Chambers says that God isn’t 50/50 in anything, yet Exodus entire program is based on the notion of partial-healing. Given Chamber’s views, shouldn’t he close Exodus’ doors because God isn’t finishing the job. Here are a few quotes from Chambers showing that God has little interest in helping his clients eliminate 100% of their same-sex feelings:

“One thing we can expect as Christians is a life of denial. I don’t think we’re afraid to tell people that they may have a lifetime of struggle. Freedom isn’t the absence of struggle, but the life of struggle with joy in the process.” (Christianity Today, Sept. 13, 2007)

“By no means would we ever say change can be sudden or complete.” (Los Angeles Times, June 18, 2007)

Sexual orientation “isn’t a light switch that you can switch on and off.” (Los Angeles Times, June 18, 2007)

“And so every single morning – this is a ritual for me – I wake up and I say, “Dear Lord, I can’t make it today without You. I choose to deny what comes naturally to me.’” (Love Won Out, Phoenix, Feb. 10, 2007, www.boxturtlebulletin.com)

Chambers told One News Now that he had never met someone who had a “sudden or complete change when it came to homosexuality.” He told the news service that he believes that God gives people the ability to overcome on a daily basis, rather than “a complete transformation in an instant.” (One News Now, June 22, 2007)

“I don’t think change is going from gay to straight. Just saying that doesn’t sound like an accurate representation of what Exodus facilitates or proclaims.” (Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth, pg. 35, Haworth Press 2003, interview taped March 11, 2001)

“To say that Exodus is a great healer and the place for people to become straight, I would think that is not right. If there are Exodus ministries that do that, we need to change that. We need to work on that.” (Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth, pg. 35, Haworth Press 2003, interview taped March 11, 2001)

“Put me in a bathhouse, would I find people attractive or would it stir me, it probably would. I’m not a raging heterosexual where I have to worry about if a lady walks in the room and I have to turn my head, while some guys are like that.” (Anything But Straight, pg. 58, Haworth Press 2003, interview taped March 11, 2001)

Later in his article, Chambers admits that his ministry leaves people lonely and absent of the human needs of sexual  fulfillment and relationship intimacy:

While some do fall into sexual sin because of a momentary temptation, the majority of individuals stay in sexual sin because it seems to satisfy a deep core, God-given need for intimacy and relationship.  However, sex was never meant to be a substitute for relational intimacy with God, others, or even our spouse.  Sex is a beautiful, natural and godly expression that flows out of healthy intimacy, within the confines of heterosexual marriage.  As our creator, God defines the parameters for sexual expression and intimacy.

Chambers does not seem to get that his clients are not attracted to the opposite sex, so the marriages he proposes are not healthy and do not meet the intimacy requirements of his depressed clients. Furthermore, he is forcing people to make the false choice between their natural sexuality and God. While he appeared to embrace gay Christians while duping Lisa Ling, he is quite clear about his feelings in his article.

Chambers had said that God is not 50/50 in biblical healing (no one healed by Jesus was left partially blind), yet he understands his ministry is a fraud — so now he is putting a silver lining around celibacy.

Celibacy is the godly option for all single men and women. In fact, the Bible mentions that those who are unmarried are able to be more focused and single-minded in their love and devotion to God.  Personally, I have heard some of the most amazing stories of God’s faithfulness from single friends who have chosen to surrender their sexuality to Him.

While this option is fine fro some people, most would find it lonely and unsatisfying — particualrly when they know they could be in a happy, same-sex relationship if they just abandoned the fake “religion” promoted by charlatans like Alan Chambers. Sadly, Chambers reiterates that his ministry is so absent of success that many fundamentalist Christians are seeing through the propaganda and realize that “change” is not possible. This, of course, makes Exodus irrelevant, so Chambers is fighting back and saying celibacy is not enough — Christians must lie about their identity.

Today many Christians with SSA are choosing celibacy, but they are also choosing to keep the gay identity/label.  This falls short of God’s best because identity matters.  How we view and refer to ourselves is very important.

Chambers answer is to lie about his success to scam desperate clients who beleive they need to be heterosexual to recieve love and acceptance from family, friends and God.

When it comes to the extreme changes that have occurred in my heart, mind and life it was the identity changes that fueled the transformation. I chose, in those early days, to focus most on figuring out who I was in Christ and that ultimately led to a change in how I behaved.  Simply discontinuing or curbing how I expressed my same-sex attractions wasn’t enough or most important.

Extreme change? Chambers admits that he still gets excited by men and it took him 9 months to successfully have sex with his wife. Is this really “extreme change” or simply an extremist fudging the facts about his failure to become heterosexual — even as he leads a program that promises “freedom from homosexuality through Jesus Christ”?

At this juncture, Chambers bashes moderate, mainstream churches that stress love over the mindlessness of shallow fundamentalism:

A second outcome of the grace-only approach is that it gives license to sin.  This is taking over many churches and denominations.  Allowing clergy to be ordained while living in sin, heterosexually or homosexually, makes the Church irrelevant.  The basis of a Christian life is that it is set apart. It is different from the world.  Redeemed.  Living in sin is the opposite of living redeemed.  Anyone can be redeemed, but the result of redemption is a turning from what we once were through the power of repentance.  In order to accommodate sin one has to ignore biblical truth or revise it to fit their life choices.  Church is no longer church then, just a club for people to gather based on their common interests.

In my opinion the problem with being a gay Christian is that gay comes first and takes center stage.  God won’t share His throne with anyone or anything.

The last sentence shows the incredible denial and surreal thinking of Alan Chambers. LGBT people who come out of the closet do not spend much time thinking about their sexual orientation. They grow up, move on, and often lead rich and fulfilling lives. It is “ex-gays” like Chambers who are obsessed with homosexuality and make it the centerpiece of their existence. If you’re a so-called “ex-gay” and reading this ask yourself whether you thought more or less about your sexuality since you joined Exodus or some other program. I think the answer is quite clear. Indeed, Exodus wants you to obsess about your homosexuality so much that the group created an Iphone App to ensure that you can take your fixation with you at all times.

Here, Chambers does more mainstream Christian bashing and admits that moderate churches are rejecting his bigotry disguised as Christian “love”:

A final concern of a grace-only approach is when one believes the truth of scripture but decides to say nothing for fear of losing people or being labeled homophobic.  Entire churches and groups are “distancing” themselves from Exodus and any concrete position on sexual sin for fear that they will be targeted.  I understand; it hurts to be misunderstood, judged and threatened. It’s tough to stand for something when our culture is all about standing for nothing.  But, when you are a part of the Church you are called to stand for Christ and that usually means not everyone will like you.

We are living in trying times. Our understanding of who God is and who He created us to be, especially in light of the fallenness of humanity, is vital.  Search the scriptures and you will find that God has a plan for us that was born out of the fullness of who He is and who He intends for us to be for eternity.  I love that.

Actually, Mr. Chambers, speak for yourself. For those of us who are happily out of the closet, these are not “trying times”. They are happy times of fulfillment, intimacy, friendship and honesty. You, sir, are the epitome of fallen humanity — a man who lies to clients and takes away real hope for a happy existence. You ought to be proud of yourself.

What I wrote in today’s Advocate:

If a con artist were selling Florida swampland to vulnerable senior citizens, would the media give a sympathetic portrayal of the swindler? If a doctor were selling bogus cancer cures to desperate patients, would a television show try to help the quack by offering an image makeover?

Of course not.

Unfortunately, when it comes to coverage of the “ex-gay” issue, reporters routinely minimize the experiences of the “ex-gay” industry’s victims and provide kindhearted depictions of the cruel and fraudulent victimizers.

The most recent example of such incompetent reporting came from the Oprah Winfrey Network’s Lisa Ling, who produced a segment called “Pray the Gay Away?” for Our America With Lisa Ling. In her zest to appear “balanced,” Ling forfeited the higher journalistic value of accuracy. By doing so, the reporter inadvertently made an infomercial for the “ex-gay” group Exodus International, essentially slapping this group’s many victims in their faces.

Alan Chambers, the president of Exodus, was so happy with the puff piece that he euphorically gushed about Ling on his group’s blog.

“I would like to extend my thanks to Lisa Ling for the courtesy, sensitivity and respect she demonstrated during our interviews and the filming at our 35th annual conference,” wrote Chambers.

Several weeks prior to the airing of this show, I personally offered to fact-check Ling’s segment. She declined by saying that there was nothing to worry about because she had gay friends.

The truth is, Ling had an agenda and not one that was necessarily antigay. What the reporter wanted to do was humanize a group of activists dedicated to dehumanizing LGBT people in an effort to soothe the sensitivities of religious viewers. To accomplish this, Ling had to whitewash the facts and sweep the devastation caused by Exodus under the rug. Better to produce a tearjerker for Oprah than shine a spotlight on the antigay jerks causing tears for their victims.

On March 8, 2011, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) aired an episode of the series Our America with Lisa Ling entitled “Pray the Gay Away?” The show purported to explore the question of whether or not one can be gay and Christian at the same time, and asked whether it was possible to go from gay to straight by joining an “ex-gay” program.
ling
Instead of an honest, hard-hitting look at Exodus International, the primary proponent of ‘pray-away-the-gay’ quackery, Lisa Ling’s viewers were treated to a puff piece that cast Exodus and its president, self-styled “ex-gay” activist Alan Chambers, in a very sympathetic light. Ling allowed Chambers and others to put forth factual inaccuracies, misrepresentations of the truth, and even outright lies without once holding them accountable to the facts: so-called “ex-gay” programs do not work and harm their clients.

Lisa Ling’s sins of omission were equally grievous. For example, she never mentioned Exodus’ notorious anti-gay lobbying efforts or the fact that Exodus endorses “therapy” that has been denounced by every major medical professional organization in America. Exodus embraces the use of “spiritual warfare,” also known as exorcism.

In short, rather than doing her journalistic duty to uncover the facts, ask the tough questions, and sort through the spin to find the truth, Lisa Ling allowed herself to be duped by Alan Chambers. The result was a kind and gentle (but utterly fictitious) portrait of Exodus that essentially functioned as an infomercial for that organization.

Here at Truth Wins Out, we know all too well the dangers posed by Exodus International and other organizations that falsely promise to ‘pray away the gay.’ These organizations are wolves in sheep’s clothing whose harmful message leaves victims with scars that last a lifetime and, all too often, drives them to attempt suicide.

PETITION LETTER

Please stop running Lisa Ling’s “Pray the Gay Away?” episode

To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing today to ask that the Oprah Winfrey Network pull the plug on Lisa Ling’s “Pray the Gay Away?” episode.

On March 8, 2011, this network aired a segment of the series Our America with Lisa Ling entitled “Pray the Gay Away?” which purported to explore the question of whether it was possible to go from gay to straight by joining an “ex-gay” program.

Ling allowed Chambers and others to put forth factual inaccuracies, misrepresentations of the truth, and even outright lies without once holding them accountable to the facts. Her sins of omission were equally grievous: for example, she never mentioned Exodus’ notorious anti-gay lobbying efforts or the fact that Exodus endorses “therapy” that has been denounced by every major medical professional organization in America.

Lisa Ling’s “Pray the Gay Away?” contains gross factual inaccuracies and fails to meet the standards of journalistic inquiry and objectivity. I call on the Oprah Winfrey Network to pull the episode from its website and future reruns until these errors are corrected.

Sincerely,

[Your name]

Lisa Ling produced a segment on “ex-gay” ministries that missed the boat. She was factually inaccurate in several places and whitewashed Exodus International’s abominable record of harm and deceit. The most glaring error is when Ling portrays Exodus as a group that no longer makes false promises. She contrasts this alleged kinder and gentler Exodus with the harsher ministry of Janet Boynes.

It is amazing that Ling had no idea that Boynes is listed as a referral on Exodus’ website — meaning her intolerant message offering false hope is also that of Exodus. Ling also was duped into believing that Exodus does not try to “pray away the gay.” She obviously did not do her homework and review substantial evidence to the contrary.

In this video, Truth Wins Out set the record straight and urged the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) to pull the show from re-airing until the factual errors are expunged from the video. Truth Wins Out believes that reporters ought to do their homework and research a topic before broadcasting misinformation on national television. In the case of Our America with Lisa Ling — the ball was dropped and a fallacious report aired that undermined efforts to stop the harm.

The Oprah Winfrey Network did a sub par job addressing the “ex-gay” issue last night. Truth Wins Out offered to help get accurate information to reporter Lisa Ling for her “Pray the Gay Away” one-hour show. Unfortunately, Ling declined and the result was a series of errors and misreporting of the real story.

A perfect example is the way Ling threw around the word “lifestyle”. No decent reporter has used this term since the 1980′s. Yet, it somehow made its way into the segment, despite all the star directors and producers that work for “The Big O” and her network. Ling tried to spin her ignorance by saying that the term came up in the context of a conversation with Alan Chambers.

However, Ling clearly initiated the use of the term during an interview with anti-lesbian activist Janet Boynes, who runs a failed “ex-gay” ministry in Minneapolis. This is what we’d expect from an intern at FOX News. This is not the quality we’d expect from a first-rate journalist.

KC and Larry met at Exodus International’s “ex-gay” ministry Love in Action while trying to “pray away the gay”. The two men fell in love and are now legally married. The Jansson’s story was featured recently in the Dallas Voice’s Valentine’s Day issue. Truth Wins Out invited KC and Larry to Memphis to speak at Rhodes College on the closing night of TWO Executive Director Wayne Besen’s Winter Tour.  The speaking engagement brought KC & Larry back to where it all began — at the Memphis “ex-gay” ministry!

Enjoy this beautiful three-part story of true love and genuine acceptance. This is real love in action.

Truth Wins Out founder Wayne Besen speaking in Lincoln, at University of Nebraska on the “ex-gay” myth.

In this video, he discusses how Exodus harms its clients when it claims that the group does not heal people — only God can. But, the group does set itself as the middleman and conduit to God.

When Exodus fails to deliver and the promised “change” does not occur — Exodus’ victims often blame themselves and feel abandoned by God. This can cause trauma and psychological damage.

Besen also discusses how so-called “ex-gay” groups do not keep statistics. They simply make them up as they go along.

alanweirdWhere is Exodus International hibernating lately?

The organization has seemingly been AWOL for much of 2010, briefly emerging for events that are most notable for their declining attendance from previous years. The only sign of a pulse has been the organization’s vanity blog, which sluggishly pens about one or two short items a day.

However, even these paltry efforts have dried up, with Exodus not posting on its blog since Dec. 16. Considering Exodus claims that it converts “hundreds of thousands” of so-called “ex-gays”, it seems irresponsible for the group’s leaders to take such a noticeably early holiday break. Where will the cold, huddled “ex-gay” masses go to get their daily fix of heterosexuality to keep themselves out of the warm Randy Thomasbathhouse steam?

Sure, I know that Randy Thomas and Alan Chambers spend a lot of time in church during the holiday season. But, really, the entire organization needs 10 days to prepare for Christmas church services? That’s more time than the Pope needs!

Hmm, it sure must be nice to be an activist in the “ex-gay” lifestyle. It’s like being a highly paid, under-worked actor that doesn’t have to wait tables and gets a remarkable amount of time off . Is Exodus taking applications?

If you have any ides where the missing “ex-gay” activists might be, please let us know ASAP!!
